A team of talented Hillview Christian School pupils have won the Regional Digital Championship for Canterbury in 2018 and are set to take on other regional winners from around the country as part of the nationwide Tahi Rua Toru Tech competition. The team will compete for the national title at a special event taking place in Wellington on Wednesday 5 December. Josh Currie-Cook, Andrew Denne, Naomi Wilson and Amelie Thorpe created a digital solution to help an existing volunteer group called the MISH to stream-line their process by making it easier for them to pick food up from restaurants and deliver it to the City Mission.

Kia ora Parents. Weather shields (known also as monsoon shields) for cars was quite an innovative idea when it was first introduced. In an era when vehicles did not have air conditioning units, the passengers were able to wind down their windows to let in some cool air protected from being blasted by the air rushing passing them as they travelled along the highway. However, while they have been a wonderful addition to the car, they can be tricky things to fix. My Toyota Hilux Surf 3.0L Turbo Diesel left rear passenger monsoon shield became unglued at one end and over time gradually

pulled away from the body of the car. It eventually began painfully flapping in the wind. To address this problem I purchased some glue, tried to stick it back on, and thought I had won the battle only to watch it pull away again. I tried different types of glue but sadly, nothing worked. It became very frustrating as each glue lacked the stickability needed. In my final effort, I purchased another recommended brand of glue and to my delight it actually worked. The shield stuck hard and fast to the body and I have had no problems since. The stickability was perfect and peace reigned once again. Going through this process reminded me of how important stickability can be in our lives. There is something to be said for the adage, “Once we start something, make sure we finish it.” The Bible contains many examples of various folk who were called to complete a task or mission and while they may have faltered at times, they remained true and finished well. There are many benefits that a pupil gains when they stick to a task or group activity. They can experience the joy of engaging their gifts, feel a genuine sense of achievement, and grow in depth of character. Paul connects this idea in Romans 5:3/4: “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” The character of a child who engages stickability grows in wisdom and stature. It is good to point out that not only is the pupil affected, but so is the rest of their group. It is such a huge encouragement when a group observe a fellow team member show

stickability. The reverse is true as well. There can be very little more discouraging for a group than when they watch a team member leave before the end. The feeling of being let down and abandoned is very real. I have personally seen this occur.

This presents an ongoing challenge to us as parents to not only endorse the idea of stickability

but value it. By doing this, we not only support their development now but prepare them for the future. Nga mihi nui, Steve Frost [Tumuaki/Principal] Give thanks for:

Age-based guidelines for kids' Internet use:

If your children use the Internet at home, you already know how important it is to help protect them from inappropriate content and

contact. All family members should act as role models for young children who are just starting to use the Internet.

Exam Support Hillview is looking for parents who can support a group of Year 9 and 10 students who are using special accommodations during exams to see if this will benefit them when taking similar assessments at Year 11 and beyond. If you are interested in lending a hand, it would involve you acting as a reader/writer for a 2 hour period in Week 9 (5-6 December). The accommodations in place will vary for each student but may involve reading questions aloud to the student or acting as a handwriting scribe. We would update you with a definite time schedule. Please contact the school office if you are able to help .Ph 332 6923.
