This facility is special X-ray equipment used to perform angiogram (special X- rays of the arteries). These are included in the room charges. Additional meals will be charged accordingly. The meals are prepared from 5 star hotel experienced chef and closely supervised by a dietician. Patients can choose from a menu of Western, Chinese, Malay, Healthy Children’s Menu and full or soft diet. ANAESTHESIOLOGIST

DR FONG CHEE HUANG M.D. (USM), M. MED. ANAESTH (USM) Dr. Fong Chee Huang is our Consultant Anaesthesiologist. He began his career as a House Officer at Kuantan Hospital. He continued his career in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and has served in various parts of the country as well as overseas missions. Dr. Fong was awarded with MSA Award by Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists. He is a Member of Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists and qualified internal auditor of MS ISO 9001:2000 by SIRIM. Prior to his current appointment with KPJ Hospital, he was a Clinical Anaesthesiologist in Royal Malaysian Naval Hospital based in Lumut, Perak. He has vast experience in Anaesthesiology field in Hospital settings. His involvements in Humanitarian Mission for Tsunami in Acheh in 2005, Formula 1 Grand Prix and Motorcycle Grand Prix speak for its own. His special interests are in Trauma Anaesthesia, Emergency Evacuation and Peripheral & Plexus nerve blockade for surgery.

STHESIOLOGIST DR KUMARASAMY A/L NATCHIMUTHU

MBBS (INDIA), M.MED (UKM) Dr. N. Kumarasamy is our Consultant Anaesthesiologist. He started his houseman rotation posting at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) in 1987. Subsequently he has been serving as an Anaesthetist since 1991. He joined Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital ever since 1999. He is a very experienced Anaesthesiologist in field in hospital settings. Dr. Kumar has produced a clinical book on ICU Management for Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital. His special interests are in Management of Acute Pain services and Epidural procedures. Dr. Kumar was the Chairman for Infectious Control Disease at Bukit Mertajam Specialst Hospital since 2003. He was actively involved in the Continuous Medical Education as one of the speaker to educate nurses and staff at Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital. He has produced a research paper on ―Effect of Propofal and Methohexital in Electroconvulsive Patients (E.C.T) Neurology, HKL which was presented at the Asean Anaesthesiology Meeting in Bangkok in 1997. DR MUHAMMAD FADHIL BIN MOHAMAD AZZAHARI MBBS (MALAYA), M.MED. ANAESTHESIOLOGY (USM) FELLOWSHIP IN CARDIOTHORACIC ANAESTHESIOLOGY AND TRANSPLANTATION (NEWCASTLE,UK)

Dr Fadhil was born in 1969 in Perak. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1994 from University of Malaya. He registered as full medical practitioner with the Malaysian Medical Council in 1995. His medical career started at University Hospital (UMMC) as house officer. He obtained his post-graduate qualification in Anaesthesiology (Masters of Medicine, Anaesthesiology) in 2001 from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He served as the Clinical Specialist in Anesthesiology at Hospital Alor Star, Hospital Kangar and Sarawak General Hospital from 2001 to 2007. In November 2007, he was accepted as a Fellow in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Transplantation at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom; the post he held for 2 years. Upon returning to Malaysia in 2010, he continued his service at the Ministry of Health as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologist in Sarawak General Hospital Heart Centre.

CARDIOLOGIST

DR SAFARI ELIS MD (USM), MMED (INT. MED) (MAL), FELLOWSHIP IN INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY (AUSTIN HEALTH, AUSTRALIA) Dr. Safari Elis completed his MD at the University of Science Malaysia in 1991. He worked as a House Officer at Ipoh Hospital for a year and subsequently posted to the Cardiology Dept, IJN in 1992. Dr. Safari fell in love with Cardiology and pursued his Postgraduate Master’s Degree in 1995 and subsequently worked as a Physician and Head of Department of Medical Department at Seberang Jaya General Hospital in 1999. His Cardiology stint started in 2002 at the General Hospital, Penang and went on to continue his Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology in Australia. He had been working as a Cardiologist since 2002, performing both invasive and non-invasive procedures in a high

volume heart centre at General Hospital, Penang. The non-invasive services include exercise ECG test, Echocardiography, Transesophageal ECHO and stress ECHO as well as interpretation of Multi-Slice CT Coronary Angiography. His invasive work includes Conventional Coronary Angiography, Coronary and Peripheral Angioplasties and Pacemaker implantation. Dr. Safari has been actively involved in many International Multicenter Trials as an investigator and participated in numerous Cardiology Meetings as faculty members and speakers. During his service in the public sector, Dr. Safari had been awarded with the Award for Service of Excellence from the Ministry of Health on several occasions.

DR. CHAN KOK KHENG MBBS (UM), MRCP (IRELAND), FNHAM Dr Chan graduated from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1996. He underwent his

housemanship trainng in Penang General Hospital and then served the Internal Medicine

Department of Hospital Seberang Jaya from 1998 till 2006 as Medical Officer. He obtained

his membership from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2006 and was later

appointed as Physician at Hospital Seberang Jaya from 2006 till 2007. During this period,

he also served as Visiting Physician at Hospital Bukit Mertajam and Hospital Sungai

Bakap. He obtained his fellowship in cardiology from National Heart Association of

Malaysia (NHAM) in 2012.

Dr Chan underwent Cardiology training in Penang General Hospital from 2007 till 2010.

He had further training in Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Carotid Artery

Stenting in National Taiwan University Hospital in 2011. Prior to this current appointment,

Dr Chan was Consultant Cardiologist at Penang General Hospital from 2011 till 2013.

Dr Chan is trained in the following specialties and procedures; among others:

Chronic non-communicable diseases, General Cardiology, Echocardiography, Invasive Coronary Angiogram, Coronary Angioplasty and Stenting, Primary Angioplasty for Heart Attack, Peripheral Vascular Disease Endovascular Intervention, Carotid Artery Stenting

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

DR BASHEER AHAMED ABDUL KAREEM MBBS (MALAYA) FRCS (IRELAND) Dr Basheer is a senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeon with extensive experience at Penang General Hospital and has over 15 years of medical working experience with several Government hospitals in Malaysia as well as Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur. He obtained his MBBS (University of Malaya) in 1997 and Fellowship of the Royal of College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2002. Thereafter, he completed his Fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery with the Malaysian Ministry of Health by 2006 and was subsequently gazetted by MOH and registered with the Malaysian National Specialist Register as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He has wide experience in the cardiothoracic surgical discipline and attended training both locally and abroad in various centres, including at Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s premier cardiothoracic surgical centre and in Regional Cardiothoracic Centre Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, United Kingdom where he had the opportunity to enhance his knowledge in advanced management of cardiothoracic surgical cases. He currently manages various adult and paediatric cardiac surgical as well as complex lung cases including lung cancer, mediastinal masses and pleural space infections. In terms of research and publications, Dr Basheer A Kareem has published his writing in various articles, abstracts and posters. He has also presented lectures and spoken at various meetings and conferences, both locally and abroad. Dr Basheer has played an instrumental role in facilitating Penang General Hospital’s organization of state and national level updates and scientific meetings. He has also been awarded Excellent Staff award (Anugerah Khidmat Cemerlang) several times by the Penang Health Department in recognition of his excellent service. In the field of medical education, Dr Basheer has also contributed to the development of the younger generation doctors through his honorary teaching posts in Penang Medical College. He is also actively involved in training of paramedic officers and nurses in the field of cardiac surgical.

GENERAL SURGEON

DR PADMANATHAN RAJOO MBBS (MALAYA) FRCS (EDINBURGH) Dr. Padmanathan Rajoo, Medical Director of KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital is our Consultant General Surgeon. He received his MBBS from University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1989, and admitted as the Fellow Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1995. He has vast experience in the field of General Surgery involving open and laparoscopic abdominal surgery, breast, colorectal, traumatology, endoscopy and other general surgery area. He is a member of Malaysian Medical Association and Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Society of Asia (ELSA). He offers General Surgical services including minimally invasive surgery. DR MOHD SHAIFUL BAHRUN B. HUSSAIN MBBS (MALAYA) FRCS (EDINBURGH)

Dr. Mohd Shaiful Bahrun B. Hussain is our Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon. Dr. Mohd Shaiful Bahrun graduated from University of Malaya with M.B.B.S in 1992. He obtained his M.Med (Surgery) University Science of Malaysia (USM) in 1999 and had served as a Lecturer in USM’s Medical School from 1995 to 2003. He was trained in Laparoscopic Diagnostic and Therapeutic procedures during this attachment with USM. Dr. Mohd Shaiful Bahrun is a member of Malaysian Medical Association Malaysian Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Society of Asia (ELSA). In 2002, he was awared with an Excellent Service Award from Hospital University Science of Malaysia. Dr.Shaiful offers a range of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures or minimally invasive procedures as a first option in abdominal surgeries.

DR. ASHRAF MD RAZI MBBS (MANIPAL, INDIA), MASTERS IN GENERAL SURGERY (UKM) Dr. Ashraf Md Razi graduated from Kasturba Medical College Manipal India with MBBS

degree in 1997 and Masters in General Surgery in 2005. He has been serving the

Malaysian public since 1997 at various government hospitals and Hospital Universiti

Kebangsaan Malaysia with over 15 years of training and exposure in the field of General

surgery and Vascular Surgery.

Aside from his vast exposure in the surgical discipline, he was also involved in various local

and international meetings and conferences.

In the field of medical education, Dr Ashraf was involved in the clinical training, tutorial and

lectures for students of Penang Medical College contributing to the development of the

younger generation through his teaching posts in Penang Medical College. He also

mentors the elective medical students, house officers and registrars in the surgical

department at the government hospital.

Dr Ashraf has special interest in vascular access surgery and abdominal aortic surgery

while also involve with peripheral arterial bypasses and venous diseases of the lower limbs.

OBSTETRICIAN & GYNAECOLOGIST

DR RAMESH P. MALA PERUMAL MBBS (UM), MRCOG (LONDON) Dr. Ramesh P. Mala Perumal is our Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Ramesh graduated from University of Malaya in 1991 and subsequently obtained his postgraduate degree (M.R.C.O.G) from the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, U.K, in 1997. He has more than 15 years experience in obstetrics and gynaecological as well as manages low/high risk obstetrics cases with a wide range of gynaecological conditions (i.e. Infertility, Menopause, Gynaecological oncology and Urogynaecological cases. His areas of special interest are gynaecological key-hole surgery (minimal access surgery / laparoscopic surgery). He performs many types of hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgeries such as hysteroscopic resection of endometrium / myoma and laparoscopic surgeries such as ovarian cystectomy, adhesiolysis, salpingectomy, myomectomy and laparoscopic hysterectomies. DR FAWZIAH TAN SRI DATO’ ISHAK M.B.B.S (UM) , M.R.C.O.G ( LONDON) Dr. Fawziah Tan Sri Dato’ Ishak is our Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Fawziah is an experienced and well known Consultant in the Northern Region, having been in active private practice for the last 16 years. Dr. Fawziah graduated as Medical

Officer at the age of 23 from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1984. She immediately pursued her passion in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, qualifying as a consultant in 1992, from the prestigious Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in London. She has worked and interacted with various consultants both locally and abroad. Dr. Fawziah is looking forward to continuing her professional practice at our esteemed establishment. DR. LIM SOO SOO MBBS (BELGAUM, INDIA), MMED O&G (UM) Dr. Lim Soo Soo is our Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Lim obtained her MBBS in 1999 and Master in O&G in 2008. She has over 12 years of experience in delivering medical care to patients at several government hospitals. Dr Lim earned her IJOG Prie Paper Award Honorable Mention (Best Clinical Research Article from a Low/Middle-income Country) in 2008. She was also awarded the ‘Sijil Perkhidmatan Cemerlang’ by Ministry Of Health in 2008 and 2011. Aside from her vast experience in the Obstetric & Gynaecology discipline, Dr. Lim has also published her writings in international journals and conducted presentations at various meetings and conferences. In the field of medical education, Dr Lim contributes to the development of the younger generation through her teaching posts in Penang Medical College and Royal College of Perak. She also mentors the elective medical students, house officers and registrars in the department at the government hospital. She was appointed as supervisor for the student of family physician by UKM and assumed the position as an invited lecturer in Penang Nursing College.

OPHTHALMOLOGIST

DR. SARBJIT SINGH M.D. (UKM), M.S. (OPHTHALMOLOGY) Dr. Sarbjit Singh is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, who has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating eye-related diseases and injuries as well as performing surgeries such as removing cataracts, relieving pressure caused by glaucoma, repairing blood vessel ruptures and other injuries. He obtained his basic degree in medicine from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 1985 and subsequently pursued his studies in Ophthalmology at the same university, graduating with a Masters in Ophthalmology in 1994. Dr. Sarbjit’s practical experience in medicine began in with his housemanship at University Hospital in Petaling Jaya in 1985 and subsequently as a Medical Officer at the same hospital the following year. He later served with the Malaysian Armed Forces for two years before returning to UKM as a Medical Officer in the Ophthalmology Department in 1988 and soon after, pursued his postgraduate studies in Ophthalmology at UKM. Upon completing his Masters degree in 1994, Dr. Sarbjit served as a Specialist Ophthalmologist at the Melaka Hospital in Melaka and later at the Kangar Hospital in Perlis. In 1997, Dr. Sarbjit joined the private practice at Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital and since August 2009, has been serving as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital.

DR. GUNN PENG SEOK @ GAN PENG SEOK MBBS (MALAYA), MS (OPHTHAL) (UKM), ICO (UK)

Dr. Gunn Peng Seok was completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from University of Malaya in 1998 and has Pass Basic Science Assesment in Ophthamology in 2001, followed by Clinical Sciences Assesment in Ophthamology in 2003. In 2005, he was awarded by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Master of Surgery (Ophthamology). Dr. Gunn has various experiences from various working environments since he started his career with Hospital Alor Setar, Kedah as House Officer from 1998 to 1999. He worked with Klinik Kesihatan Guar Chempedak, Kedah From 1999 to 2000 as Medical and Health Officer before contributing to Ophthalmology Department, Hospital Alor Setar as as Medical Officer starting from 2000 to 2005. Starting from 2001 and end in 2005, he has contributed his expertise to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as a Master student Ophthalmogy Training Programme under the open system. Upon Feb 2003 to March 2003 he has done his Neuromedical which posted at Hospital Pulau Pinang and continuing as Neurosurgical in Hospital UKM until April 2003. Dr. Gunn has two distinct in making Ophthalmology attachment in Hospital UKM which Feb 2004 to May 2004 was the 1st and the 2nd was on Jan 2005 to May 2005. He officially launched his responsibilities as Ophthalmologist in early of June 2005 to end of June 2005 at Hospital Alor Setar, Kedah before entered Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 2005 to 2006. The journey continues at Hospital Sg Petani in March 2006 until November 2006. Starting from December of 2006 he had joined Metro Specialist Hospital, Sg Petani as Ophthalmologist before choosing KPJ as his continuing career development in 2011. Dr. Gunn Teaching and Communication skills is inevitable due to the reasons that since finished his houseman ship training, he had involved in various continuing medical education programmes; giving training to nurses, medical assistants and other supporting staff. He had given lectures to doctors in many hospitals such as Hospital Alor Setar, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Sg. Petani and Metro Specialist Hospital. In addition, he took part in few public forums while did his training in Alor Setar, as well as in Metro Specialist Hospital. In 2006, while working with Hospital Sg. Petani, he was a part time lecturer for AIMST (Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology), and involve in clinical round, teaching and assessment of medical students.

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

DR T. KANAGESVARAN MBBS (MADRAS), FRCS (EDIN), CIME (USA) AM Dr. T. Kanagesvaran is our Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr. Kanagesvaran was born and brought up in Kuala Kangsar, Perak where he completed his secondary education at Clifford School. He then acquired the MBBS Degree from the University of Madras in 1979. He served as a House Officer, Medical Officer and Registrar at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital before leaving for the prestigious Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in the UK where he received extensive Orthopaedic training. At the same time he was successful in acquiring the FRCS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon his return, he served once again at the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital. He left government service in 1992 and joined Gleneagles Medical Centre in Penang as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in partnership with an existing practitioner. In 1998 he started his own practice at Medicare Specialists Hospital Bukit Mertajam which was later renamed KPJ Bukit Mertajam Specialists Hospital. He has served as the Medical Superintendent of the hospital. Dr. Kanagesvaran has more than 25 years of Orthopaedic experience. He has extensive knowledge in treating fractures (traumatology) including pelvic fractures, paediatric orthopaedics, joint replacement and reconstruction, diabetic foot, orthopaedic tumors and infections, osteoarthritis and also limb lengthening. He has a special interest in arthroplasty (knee and hip), osteoporosis and spinal surgery. He has attended several courses in Malaysia, Singapore, India, France, Germany, UK, been on attachment in Hong Kong and participated in meetings in the USA. He has also acquired the CIME qualification and been inducted into the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. Dr. Kanagesvaran is also active in charitable and spiritual organizations. He is the current president of the Rotary Club of Butterworth which is celebrating its 50th year in Rotary International. He is also Northern Region Organiser and a spiritual healer with Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam Malaysia. He has just been elected as President of Persatuan Amriteshwari Malaysia, Penang Chapter. He is married with three children.

Dr. Naharuddin was graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1993 and obtained his Postgraduated Degree of Master in Medicine (Orthopaedic) from University of Science Malaysia in year 2000. He has more than 15 years of experience in Orthopaedic and Traumatology in several Government Hospitals, University Hospitals and a Private Hospital (Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital). He has completed his MD at National University of Malaysia in 1987 and he started his career as House Officer at Penang Hospital for 1 year and subsequently transferred to Kuala Terengganu Hospital. After more than 1 year in orthopaedic department, he felt very comfortable and very interested to pursue his study in it. He completed his Postgraduate Master’s Degree in Orthopaedic from University Science of Malaysia in 1996. As Orthopaedic Surgeon he has worked in various hospitals. From Kuala Terengganu Hospital he was transferred to Kangar Hospital as the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in that hospital. There, he had opportunity to do attachment at Arthroplasty Centre, Aurich, Germany in year 2000. After that he was transferred to Kota Bharu Hospital. He went on to continue his Fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedic for 1 year at Rush Presbyterian St Luke Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Sick Children, Chicago, USA for 1 year in 2003. In April 2008, due to promotion he was transferred to Seberang Jaya Hospital. Dr. Yaacob has attended many orthopaedic meetings or conferences at national and International levels. DR EWE KHAY GUAN MBBCH BAO MA (IRELAND), (MS ORL-HNS, UKM) Dr. Ewe Khay Guan is our Consultant Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeon. Dr. Ewe graduated from Trinity College Dublin, Republic of Ireland (1980) and received his early ENT exposure at Penang General Hospital before proceeding to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital for his postgraduate training. He obtained his Master in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery) from the National University of Malaysia. After serving the Ministry of Health in the ENT discipline for nearly 11 years, he then decided to join the private Healthcare service and was attached with Medicare Specialist Center in 1996. Prior to his resignation, he was the Head of ENT Department at General Hospital of Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bharu. Dr. Ewe has vast experience in the field of ENT, both at government and private hospitals practices and has special interests in minimally invasive endoscopic nose and sinus surgeries, operation for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. He was formerly the Medical Director at Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital.

His areas of expertise include managing medical conditions in Endocrinology (Hormonal), Respiratory Medicine, Non-Interventional General Cardiovascular Disease, Gastrointestinal Disease, General Haematology, General Rheumatology and Neurological Disorders. He is a Fellow of Royal College of UK and College of Chest Physician as well as a member of the Academy of Medicine. Dr. Muthusamy also provides General Health Screening including Stress Test for heart. He performs gastroscopy for upper gastrointestinal disorders such as gastric, ulcers and reflux disease. DR CHAN TAH PERNG MBBS (UM), M. MED (UKM) Dr. Chan Tah Perng, Consultant Physician, obtained his Medical Degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), from University of Malaya in 1991 and his

postgraduate qualification, Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine), from the National University of Malaysia in 1998. His practical experience began with his housemanship at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 1991, followed by his service as Medical Officer with Tawau Hospital (1992-1994), Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (1994-1997) and Hospital UKM (1997-1998). He subsequently worked as a Clinical Specialist in Alor Star Hospital (1998-2000). In year 2000, Dr. Chan joined Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital as a Consultant Physician, offering inpatient and outpatient services for the Management of Medical disorders such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke and asthma. He also performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including upper endoscopy, exercise treadmill test, transthoracic echocardiography and other diagnostic biopsies. DR ZAIDI BIN ZAKARIA MD (USM), M.Med (Paed) USM Dr. Zaidi Bin Zakaria is our Consultant Paediatrician. Dr. Zaidi is from School of Medical Science, University Science of Malaysia in 1995 and obtained his Master’s Degree in Paediatrics from the same university in August 2004. Dr. Zaidi had ten years experience working in a vast number of major State Government Hospitals such as General Hospital of Taiping, General Hospital of Sarawak, General Hospital of Alor Setar, General Hospital of Kuala Terengganu, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, General Hospital of Kota Bharu and General Hospital of Pulau Pinang. He also had the opportunity to work in a district hospital i.e Hospital of Serian, Sarawak as a Medical and Health Officer and as an acting Hospital Director. He was with Bagan Specialist Centre, Butterworth as a Resident Paediatrician from 2005 – 2009. Having involved in Paediatrics (as a medical officer and specialist) for the last 10 years, Dr. Zaidi has gained and built a special interest in Neonatology. He was appointed as Pediatrician in-charge in Neonatology Unit at General of Hospital Kota Bharu and Hospital Pulau Pinang before joining Bagan Specialist Hospital Centre in 2005.

DATIN DR CHOR HOOI LENG MBBS (MYSORE), MMED (RADIOLOGY) UKM Dr. Chor Hooi Leng is our Consultant Radiologist. Dr. Chor was graduated from University of Mysore, India in 1985. After housemanship, she continued as a Medical Officer in Internal Medicine for two years and as Registrar in the Department of Radiologist, General Hospital, Penang. After completing her Radiology training at General Hospital of Kuala Lumpur and University Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1994, she was appointed as Radiologist in General Hospital of Alor Star and General Hospital of Sungai Petani. She joined Bukit Mertajam Specialist Hospital in 1997 as Consultant Radiologist.

DR. KWAH YEW GEE MBCHB (DUNDEE, UNITED KINGDOM), FRCR (UNITED KINGDOM), M.MED.(RADIOLOGY)(UKM) Dr. Kwah Yew Gee graduated from University of Dundee, United Kingdom and obtained his

MBChB (University of Dundee,UK) in 2000. He passed his final fellowship examination in

Clinical Radiology held by The Royal College of Radiologists (UK) and Hong Kong College of

Radiologists and obtained membership of Royal College of Radiologist, FRCR (UK) in 2008.

After completing his Radiology training at General Hospital of Kuala Lumpur and Pusat

Perubatan University Kebangsaan Malaysia, he obtained his M.Med. (Radiology)(UKM) in

2009.

He is a fellow of The Royal College of Radiologists (UK) and a registered specialist in

Radiology with the National Specialist Register (NSR).

He served as Radiologist at General Hospital of Sungai Petani and Penang General Hospital

before joining KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital. He has over 13 years of experience in

delivering medical care to patients at several government hospitals.

Aside from his medical career, Dr. Kwah also contributes to medical education teaching by

medical students at Penang Medical College and AIMST University and shares his

knowledge with the medical and health officers in the Ministry of Health hospitals. He gives

regular presentations and frequently attends conferences and courses conducted within and

outside the hospital.

UROLOGIST

DR MOHAMMAD AFZAL AM, M.B.B.S. (UM), M. SURG (UM) M. BU, Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU) Dr. Afzal is a European Board Certified Urologist, who is well versed in all fields of urological sub-specialities including endourology, uro-oncocology, urogynaecology, andrology and

kidney transplant. He also has unique expertise in minimally invasive procedures of the prostate. Dr. Afzal completed his primary medical degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Science (MBBS), at the University of Malaya in 1995 but his predilection for Urology led him to pursue his postgraduate studies at the same university, graduating with a Masters of Surgery in 2001, and subsequently to obtain his Fellowship of the European Board of Urology in 2008. He received his early training in the mid-90s in Muar Hospital in Johor and later as Medical Officer at Seremban General Hospital in Negeri Sembilan. In 1997-2001, Dr. Afzal took up a position as Trainee Lecturer and Medical Officer at the Department of Surgery at the University of Malaya Medical Centre before moving on to become a Urologist at the Urology Unit at the same hospital, where he was responsible for running the clinic, operating theatre and department staff training as well as to assist in the UMMC kidney transplant program. In 2001, the Urology Unit of University of Malaya’s Department of Surgery appointed Dr. Afzal as a Lecturer, a post he maintained for four years until he left in 2005 to set up his own private practice as Consultant Urologist at Putra Medical Centre in Alor Star, Kedah. He joined KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital as Consultant Urologist in August 2009. Dr. Afzal’s interest in Urology is marked by his numerous research, publications and presentations on topics relating to this field and his involvement as co-investigator in International Multicentre Trials. His accomplishments include, among others, the first case of Prostiva, prostate therapy in Malaysia, the biggest case series of Prostiva, prostate therapy in Malaysia, and one of the largest case series of Memokath prostatic stent in Malaysia.

DR GAN KIAN SEONG MD (UM) , MRCP (UK) BOARD OF NEPHROLOGY (M'SIA) C.M.I.A (NIOSH) CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN & NEPHROLOGIST Dr. Gan Kian Seong is our Consultant Physician and Consultant Nephrologist. He has worked in a number of hospitals as a Physician and Nephrologist. He has vast experience in treating inpatients and outpatients cases. His areas of expertise include managing nephrology conditions such as acute and chronic kidney disease, SLE, glomerulonephritis, dialysis and kidney transplantation. Others area of expertise include medical conditions in Endocrinology (Hormonal), Respiratory Medicine, Non-Interventional General Cardiovascular Disease, Gastrointestinal Disease, General Haematology, General Rheumatology and Neurological Disorders. He is a Member of Royal College of UK, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Malaysia Society of Nephrology and Malaysia Society of Transplantation. Dr. Gan also provides General Health Screening including Stress Test for heart. He is Good Clinical Practice and NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Healthy) certified.

GASTROENTEROLOGIST AND PHYSICIAN

DR. OOI BOON PHOE, M.B.B.S,MRCP (UK), FRCP (EDIN), CMIA (NIOSH), AM (MALAYSIA) SCE SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE IN GASTROENTEROLOGY (UK), FELLOWSHIP OF GASTROENTEROLOGY (MALAYSIA, AUS, JPN). Dr. Ooi Boon Phoe is our Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician. He has over 12

years of medical working experience with several Government hospitals in Malaysia as a

Physician and Gastroenterologist. He obtained his MBBS (Bangalore) in 1998 and MRCP

(UK) in 2004. Thereafter, he completed his Fellowship of Gastroenterology with the Malaysian

Ministry of Health by 2009 and was subsequently gazetted by MOH and registered with the

Malaysian National Specialist Register as a Physician and Gastroenterologist.

Dr Ooi earned his certification as a Certified Medical Impairment Assessor from the National

Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) in year 2010.

He has wide experience in the Gastroenterology discipline and attended training both locally

and abroad in various centres, including at Selayang Hospital, where Malaysia’s premier

Hepatology Centre is located, and in Australia and Japan where he had the opportunity to

enhance his knowledge in advanced management of gastroenterology cases and therapeutic

endoscopy.

In terms of research and publications, Dr Ooi has published his writing in books, articles,

abstracts and posters. He has also presented posters and spoken at various meetings and

conferences, both locally and abroad.He also played an instrumental role in facilitating

Penang General Hospital’s organization of state and national level updates and scientific

meetings.

In the field of medical education, Dr Ooi also contributed to the development of the younger generation through his teaching posts in Penang Medical College and AIMST College, where he was an Honorary Lecturer.
