    \Vith the deat h of James C.McCurdy last Friday morning,Lower Merion township lost oneof its most outs tanding citizens.r\ member of an old Pennsylvania,family that goes back more' than a :century in this State, James,Cllristo'pher ivlcCuniy 'was bornin Peach Bottom Township, Yorkcounty, Pennsylvania, May 16,1843 , son of \Vi ll iam James andAlice (Fulton) McCurdy. Hiswife was a daughter of John Fult on , a r el at iv e of Robert Fulton,of steamboat fame.Mr. McCurdy 's educa ti on wasacqui red in schools of h is sec ti onand in the Millersvil le StateNormal School. In the fall of1861 he taught school in Lancaster county. During the Civil Warhe served in the 130th Regiment,Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers:Company 1.Won Promotion.Although bu t 19 years o f a ge ,he was made a non-commissionedofficer. At the end o f h i s term oferilistment, in t he winte r of 1863,Mr. McCurdy returned to thework of teaching school and con,t inued in thi s until 1864, when he

    re-enl isted in Company D, 192dRegiment and was finally discharged in 1864. On his way homefrom t he a rmy he cast his f ir stvote for President Lincoln andcontin'ued to be a staunch Republican.In ]867' he formed a publishingpartnership with Peter \\ '.
