Senior Story Swap:

Memories of early childhood by Charles Lade—-When I was about 3-4 years old we lived in the country, rented, close to Ft. Kearney, Nebraska. We had no electricity or running water. Outhouse standard. One time my mom made a bowl of butter which she churned. I like butter. I ate the whole bowl! She wasn't too happy about it. My dad got permission to get the honey out of some beehive that was in a shelterbelt, trees planted in rows usually east and west to cut the wind from blowing the topsoil away that happened during the dust bowl. He cut the wires that held the honey ruining the frames to make more honey. I don't know what the owner said. But, as a result of going with them to get the honey I found out the I am very allergic to poison ivy.

For fun, my older sister and older brother and I would get the horse buggy up on a small rise and lift the traces and go down the hill into a field for a nice ride. Dangerous? Probably. But we didn't have any accidents. My brother, two years older than I, and my sister six years older, walked down the road to school. Don't know how far it was. Never went. A little while later we moved to Kansas. Where my next story will begin...

Protect yourself - and others - to stay healthy from ODA Health and Wellness Newsletter June 2020

It is important to protect yourself from illness, especially during a health pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend these tips to stay healthy during COVID-19:

Wash your hands often. Washing your hands is the best way to protect yourself from illness and prevent the spread of infections.

Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. It is important to wash your hands after you have been in a public place, after you blow your nose, cough, sneeze, or go to the bathroom, and before you eat or drink.

If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry.

Try to not touch your face with unwashed hands.

Limit close contact with others.

Stay away from people who are sick or who do not feel well. Try to stay about six feet away from others. Stay away from crowded places and try not to gather in large groups.

Cover your mouth and nose when around others.

Use a cloth face mask when you are in public or around others. This can help prevent the spread of illness.

Cover when cough and sneeze.

Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. Wash your hands with soap and warm water after you cough or sneeze. Use hand sanitizer if water and soap

are not available.

Clean and disinfect

Clean AND disinfect surfaces that you touch each day. It is important to do this often. Commonly touched surfaces include tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Use detergent or soap and water to clean dirty surfaces first. Then, use a household disinfectant. Most common household disinfectants will work.

Story Swap-We would love to hear from you.

We had our first submission of a story this month! Share your story!

We are starting a segment in the newsletter called “Story Swap”. This is an opportunity for you to write and share a story. We hope that this will give encouragement to others during this time that we are apart. Please feel free to share stories and memories of growing up in your community, age old lessons, childhood days, ac-tivities you did for fun, etc.

Here are some sample questions to help get you started:

1-What are some of the things you remember about your childhood best friend and what you did together?

2-What were some family traditions you observed during your early life? Do you continue any of those to-day?

3-What is one piece of advice you would give to younger generations?

4-Describe when your life took an unpredictable turn.

5-What kind of heat did your home have when growing up? Did it keep you warm? What about during the coldest winters?

6-Describe dating during your younger years. Where did you go? What did you do?

We look forward to reading your thoughts or stories and letting others read about them in the newsletter. Please email them to [email protected] or mail them in at Defiance County Senior Services, 140 East Broadway, Defiance Ohio 43512.
