SCHOOL CHOIR!Last Monday September 23 the girls from our Stage 1 and Senior Choir were fortunate enough to have a tutor from the Australian Girls Choir come to visit.

The girls were taught a song and given a glimpse of what the Australian Girls Choir does.

Special mention also to our Senior Choir for their fantastic performance in our K-6 Assembly on Tuesday. You blew everyone away!

Senior Choir rehearsals will commence again on Tuesday Week 2 at 8am.

Stage 1 Choir has finished for the year.

Mel RahmeChoir Coordinator

SCHOOL CLOSED DURING HOLIDAYS Our school is having our roofing replaced on some of our buildings during these school holidays.

As a result we wish to advise you that our SCHOOL GROUNDS WILL NOT BE ACCESSIBLE UNDER THE DEPARTMENT’S SHARE OUR SPACE PROGRAM. Safety is paramount so please let your children know that they are not allowed on our school grounds these holidays.

We thank you for your support.

CANTEEN CLOSURE WEEKS 1-3 Our HALL roofing is scheduled to be replaced from Week 1 up until possibly Week 3 next term.

Consequently the CANTEEN WILL be affected on some days throughout this period. At times, the canteen will BE CLOSED at short notice. We will keep you informed via our new app as soon as information becomes available. Munch Monitor will also be inaccessible during the CLOSURE so orders cannot be placed.

As there WILL BE NO ACCESS TO ANY FOOD (ONLY TAP WATER) could we please ask parents to make sure your children are sent to school with fruito/vego, recess and lunch on these days?

Our first day of closure will be the first day back next term on Monday October 14.

We thank you for your understanding.

...TEACHING & LEARNING MATHS... DR.LAURINDA LOMASThis year the Kindergarten teachers Lauren Mason, Claire Hurley, Maria Sherwood and Hayley Prior and I have been trialling an innovative tool called the rekenrek to assist students to develop their early numeracy strategies, including subitising (recognising quantities without having to count them), breaking down combinations of numbers into smaller parts, and counting collections by counting on.

What is a rekenrek I hear you ask? The rekenrek was designed as a counting rack at the Freudenthal Institute in the Netherlands. It looks a little like a small abacus but with a very careful design difference. It only has 2 rows of 10 beads. Half the beads are red, and half are white on each row. This assists students to see subitise, that is to see groups of beads without counting them individually. Students then start to see larger groups of beads in smaller parts, i.e. the number 7 as 5 and 2.

We have been very excited at the progress the Kindergarten students have made so far; their reasoning skills in particular have become very refined and well explained. The students love using the rekenrek as it is play based, and flexible enough as a thinking tool to let them work at their individual level.

We were so keen to talk to other people excited about teaching mathematics, we designed a presentation to share our work and findings at the Mathematics Association of NSW (MANSW) conference at Terrigal last week. There was definite interest in what we have been doing and where we are going next in our continuing trial.

Year 3 and 4 – Collaborating and Observing This term I have been working with our Year 3 and 4 teachers Brooke Rosconi, Dani Levido, and Sylvia Zaratsian. We have been focusing on the implementation of rich tasks that allow students to investigate a concept of mathematics through real world contexts, refining students’ use of mathematical language, and different assessment strategies. We have worked closely as a group to plan lessons and teach lessons together. This kind of approach provides authentic professional learning opportunities for teachers as it is close to their everyday practice and immediate enough to make meaningful changes in a supported environment.

ELANINJA WARRIOR IS COMING!Get ready for Elaninja Warrior, soon to be taking our school by storm!

Our annual fundraising event will take place on Tuesday November 12 when students will have the opportunity to test their strength, speed and agility in our very own Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course. Designed with fun and safety in mind, the course includes a range of obstacles that are both challenging and fun.

Details of this special event and information on how to raise money will be sent home with your child in Week 1 of Term 4.

Mrs Laura Smith and Mrs Kylie Grewal

TEACHING & LEARNING MATHS... CONTINUEDPart of our excitement this term has been the visit of Professor Doug Clarke to 4M and 3W to teach number concepts through data and algebraic reasoning tasks. Prof. Clarke is an eminent and well respected international researcher in these fields and also loves working with teachers and students. Everyone was engaged and curious about the tasks he gave us to solve. Prof. Clarke mentioned many times during the day how impressed he was at the thinking our students were displaying. These sorts of visits are a great opportunity for us to see lessons modelled by others with expertise in their field, and to reflect with them afterwards to analyse how aspects of that practice could be incorporated into our own.

Doug was so fascinated by our work with the rekenrek in Kindy, and with the students’ responses in Stage 2, he asked if he could come again in Week 1 next term – of course we said yes!

GREEN DAY Green Day Tuesday October 15Each year our school holds a day of environmental activities known as Green Day. Nearly all the activities will occur on the first Tuesday of next term October 15, except for the K-2 environmental art sessions which are scheduled over Tuesday to Friday.

Wild spots

What’s a wild spot? How is it different from a tame spot? Why are wild spots important? Could you have a wild spot in your own garden?

That’s the theme for this year’s Green Day. It would be great for parents to discuss these questions and help their children spot wild and tame spots in the holidays. It is perhaps easier to start by thinking about wild and tame animals. How do they differ? What is a tame plant? A wild plant? In most gardens, parks and farms humans control what plants grow and few wild animals can live there – they are “tame” spots.

So what is a wild spot?

A wild spot is a place where the ground, rocks, plants and animals occur naturally in that area.

The ground will be uneven, covered with rocks, logs, twigs and leaves. Various grasses and groundcovers will grow in the topsoil, holding the soil against wind and rain. Many different shrubs and trees grow to give layers of vegetation at various heights. The more complex the habitat in terms of plants and shelter, the more animals it can support. Animals need somewhere to hide and something to eat!

Earth-friendly morning tea and lunch pleaseMany of you routinely send food without extra packaging, but could everyone please make an extra effort on this Tuesday to avoid any plastic or foil? We really want to minimise the waste we are sending to Kimbriki to last for many, many years past your children’s lifetimes.

What are we all doing?K-2: Each K- 2 class will have an environmental art session with Emmie Collins learning about wild spots and then creating an artwork. These lessons occur on Tuesday – Friday and class parents have emailed the following timetable to all K-2 parents asking for 2-4 helpers per class. It is always an interesting activity and we need some more hands. Do ask your child about it after their session!

GREEN DAY....... CONTINUED Green Day Tuesday October 15Year 1: Waste Education Officers from Council will visit Year 1 to talk about how and why we need to reduce, recycle and compost to minimise the waste we are leaving behind.

Year 2: Each Year 2 class will be visited by Peter Bennett, a member of the local group which repairs toys and donates them to needy children. He will demonstrate how toys can be repaired rather than thrown away, and why that is a good idea. New is not always best!

Year 2 will participate in a session with Coastal Environment Centre staff looking at the large-scale model of the Narrabeen Lagoon catchment. This links to the geography unit they have been studying on landscapes, water and erosion.

Years 3-5: In three sessions, Years 3-5 will hear from Victorian conservationist Trent Patton about the fight to save Leadbeater’s Possum. This tiny marsupial was thought extinct for 60 years and then a small surviving number were found. However, even these survivors are critically endangered due to habitat loss as their forests continue to be logged. Paper is one of the products made from these felled old-growth forests, reminding us that the things we use each day have an environmental impact. But habitat loss and endangered animals aren’t only occurring far away, right here on the northern beaches we have species such as the Eastern Pygmy Possum battling to survive at all.

Year 3: 3Z and 3H will visit Kimbriki tip on Tuesday October 15, and 3W will do the same excursion on the following Tuesday. They will spend one hour at the Ecohouse and garden learning about soil, compost and growing food, and one hour in a minibus tour of the tip, learning about the way our huge volumes of waste are managed. This entire excursion, including bus travel, is provided free by Council – thank you ratepayers!

Each Year 3 class will have a session with a teacher from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre exploring some of the bushland on our school site; its value and its challenges.

Year 4: Each Year 4 class have a 90 minute session with a teacher from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre and walk up to Dewrang Reserve, above “Fire Engine Park”. This reserve includes both, wild spots where bush regenerators work to remove introduced weeds and maintain native plant biodiversity and also “tame” spots of mown grass.

Each Year 4 class will have a one-hour session with staff from the Coastal Environment Centre, using the catchment model to learn about stormwater and also making a soil filter from soil, stones and sand to show how water is filtered through a natural landscape.

Year 5: In Term 3, Year 5 have created websites about each of the native creatures on the stunning mural at the back of the assembly hall. They will be sharing these sites and explaining what they learnt to their buddies in Year 1.

Year 6: Narrabeen Lagoon is an extraordinary asset that is part of the children’s daily life. The waterway and the bushland in its catchment provide the habitat for a fantastic range of native species and migratory birds. The lagoon also acts to mitigate flooding in torrential rain and there are many management questions around controlling its depth and flow. Year 6 will be investigating such issues as they visit the lagoon entrance with the Coastal Environment Centre.

During the remainder of the week Year 6 will be guiding K-2 classes through the recently reopened bush track, explaining why it is important to only walk up the set path to Elanora Road and not create other tracks which are damaging the soil and plants.
