PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends,

Developing the creative talents of our students has certainly been the theme of the past fortnight with several creative events happening across our calendar to promote creative thinking and performance. We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated teachers and parents to support our students in so many ways. The following short reports provide a snapshot of just some of these events from a very busy fortnight.

Pittwater Instrumental FestivalThank you to the many parents who supported our music programs by ensuring their child’s attendance at this festival and to Mrs Anna Davis, Mrs Fiona Brock, Mr Jack Tier and our wonderful conductors for their incredible, ongoing organisation of our ensembles. A special thanks also to Mrs Mel Abraham who accompanied our string ensembles on the piano at the festival.

WABIADLast Thursday we entered two senior teams in the Write A Book In A Day (WABIAD) competition, with all proceeds and works produced going towards the Children’s Cancer Charity at Westmead Hospital.

Our thanks to Kristin Prescott for her wonderful mentoring of our students and to Miss Janayah Heazlewood for her coordination of this outstanding program.

The two published works, The Last Portal by the WABIAD Imaginators, and Glasses From the Past by EHPS Better In A Book have now been submitted. A wonderful achievement for our students.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Make Music DayLast Friday our students enjoyed a day of music in the playground as several of our

band and strings students entertained students during recess and lunch. This initiative, coordinated by our wonderful Mr Jack Tier, was held in memory of the late Richard Gil, a passionate supporter of music education in Australia.

NSHS Winter TourEach year we welcome the performing arts groups from Narrabeen Sports High School to our school as part of their Winter Tour Performances. Our students from Years 3-6 were treated to several impressive performances from their drama, vocal and music ensembles. It was lovely to see so many ex-Elanora students performing. It is certainly an event we look forward to each year.

Sydney North Dance FestivalThis week marked the beginning of the annual Sydney North Dance Festival at Glen St Theatre. This year we are honoured to have 3 dance troupes performing at the concert series with our Junior, Senior Boys and Senior Girls troupes all successfully auditioning. Congratulations to Mr Jack Tier, Miss Charlotte Reddan and Ms Leigh Evans-Bullock for their excellent work with our dancers!

DebatingOur Year 5 and Year 6 debating teams hosted Bilgola Plateau students in the 2nd round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge on June 18. After being dealt two complex topics surrounding the influence of media on kids, both teams were exceptionally convincing with their arguments and secured two wins!

Huge congratulations to our Year 5 team; Harper E, Jessica K, Sylvie M, Imogen W and our Year 6 team; Ella F, Bonnie H, Amelie E and Freya H. Keep up the amazing effort! Congratulations to our two super coaches, Mrs Leesa Johnston and Miss Dani Levido.

Sydney North Rugby Union TrialsCongratulations to Max D who was selected in the Sydney North Rugby Union Team at the recent trial at Rat Park. Conditions were absolutely miserable with cold and wet weather making it incredibly challenging for all trialists. EHPS had 3 students attend the trials with Max T and Josh A competing alongside Max D. All our boys did an outstanding job in representing themselves, our school and Pittwater Zone.

Max D has now been selected in three Sydney North Teams for 2019 which include rugby league, touch football and now rugby union. He has currently spent the week in St Marys competing in the NSWPSSA Opens Rugby League Championships.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

PCS NAIDOC Art ShowThe official opening of the Peninsula Community of Schools’ annual Art Show to recognise NAIDOC Week was held last Thursday evening. Students enjoyed a traditional Welcome to Country and a chance to view the extraordinary work completed by students across the 15 schools. Thank you to Mrs Marianne de Paiva and

Mrs Jennifer Renoden for their support of this significant event. Make sure you visit the exhibition at Warriewood Square soon!

Principal for a Day – Zara B!Today the school was managed by ‘relieving’ Principal for a Day winner, Miss Zara B in Year 2! Zara spent her day making important decisions, visiting classrooms to check on the progress of student learning and even found the time to squeeze in a dance performance!

Zara won this experience by being the second highest ticket seller in the Rotary Car Raffle. We thank her for working so hard to raise these funds for our school. First prize winner, Javi V from Year 5 took home an iPad for his amazing efforts. Well done, students!

We finished the week with a fantastic dance performance from our Year 2 students, (thank you once again, Mr Tier!) and an open Year 1 strings class for our parents to see how well the students are progressing with their new violins. Thank you to Mr Mark Stevens for his outstanding work in establishing this new program for our Year 1 students.

It certainly feels like we are almost ready for a mid-year break! Student reports will be sent home next week and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing Elanora Heights team for their hard work during Semester 1, and wish you all a safe and relaxing winter break.

Until next time,

Leesa MartinPrincipal

... 2019 PARENT REPORTS - What is the same, what is different? This year we have modified our reports so there are less descriptors of learning in the Key Learning Areas of English, and also in mathematics. After feedback from parents and teachers we decided to make this change. It provides more flexibility in our programming at school, and maintains enough detail to specifically target how students respond to particular content. This change means you will see the same descriptors (or what are known as Outcomes in our syllabus documents) across a two year period (except for Kindergarten).

It needs to be noted that our end of semester reports are what we call ‘point in time’ assessments of student learning. That means we report about your child’s response to the learning opportunities provided in class at designated points in time, as directed by the expectations of the syllabus documents (e.g. English, mathematics, science and technology etc.). Even though the outcome teachers are addressing is the same across the two years, the level of difficulty changes as students address more and more complex information and use more sophisticated skills. The outcomes in the example are in a Year 1 report but are written for what is expected of most students at the very end of Stage 1, i.e at the end of Year 2. It may be that a student demonstrates a High understanding of content in one outcome across all four reporting periods of that outcome (i.e. Semester 1 2019, Semester 2 2019, Semester 1 2020 and Semester 2 2020). It is also possible that they demonstrate a High understanding of content in that outcome in Semester 1 2019 and a Sound understanding of that same outcome in Semester 1 2020. There may be many reasons for this, and it is not necessarily a concerning result. If it was, your teacher would be in contact with you.

C O N N E C T | Week 9 - Term 2 6

The comment sections of our reports in English, mathematics and the general section will remain the same. They are designed to give you more detail about how your student is working across subject areas as well as important key skills like working with others, and their work habits.

A reminder that a grading of Sound means that your child is meeting the expectations of that grade at that point in time and is something to celebrate.

If you have any questions about the new report format, please contact us.

oc. Our Term 2 working bee went really well the other weekend. The school grounds are

just like any yard, once one section is worked on the area next to it looks like it really needs working on as well! This just goes to show how good a job each of the volunteers (parents and children) did. Thank you to everyone who helped out the whole afternoon or just between their own chores for an hour or two. It is fantastic to see a difference each and every time.

The next P&C meeting is on August 7 and it would be a good opportunity to have a few more K-2 parents come along to see how the meeting goes and get an idea of what’s happening throughout the school, not just the P&C. I hope to see you then.

Finally I hope everyone has a restful break and the children are recharged for next term.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC) REPORT

The SRC has been busy this term working on projects identified through class suggestions in Term 1.

K-2 have almost finished posters of safety rules for the new playground equipment. These posters will be attached to the fence near the equipment to remind students of how to use the equipment safely.

Each K-2 class were asked to decide on a safety rule. A set of three rules were then decided on by the SRC. K-2 students have worked in the art room during some lunchtimes to make these posters.

Years 5 & 6 SRC have been busy drafting a letter to the Northern Beaches Council and the local members of parliament, requesting the building of a bus shelter at Anana Reserve (Elanora Heights students refer to this park as Fire Engine Park).

Last week the SRC walked to the park and took some photos to include in this letter. The letter will be sent by the end of the term. We will look forward to a reply.

Next week Years 3 & 4 SRC will be meeting to begin the designs for posters to label playground bins. The posters will be a visual reminder to help students make the right choice of which bins to place their rubbish in. The SRC is organising a Mufti Day on Thursday July 25 which is in week 1 of Term 3. It is called the Northern Beaches School Mufti Day and is to help fund cancer research. The SRC will give more information to classes before the end of term. The colour theme is pink and yellow and it will be a gold coin donation.

From Week 1 in Term 3 all students in K-6 are invited to participate in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge. Elanora Heights have participated in this program for a number of years, earning valuable sporting equipment for our school.

During the 10 week challenge, students participate in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits to develop their understanding of the importance of sport and physical activity. Activities may include time spent in various sports during lunchtime, in-school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends. Any daily physical activity which is moderate to vigorous in intensity can be accrued. The students record and track their physical activity as they aim to be more active, more often.

Award Daily Activity TimeBronze: 30 minutes per daySilver: 45 minutes per dayGold: 60 minutes per dayDiamond: 80 minutes per day

K-2 students do not receive log books for record keeping. Their participation will be tracked each week in class on the e-Wall chart, by Year 6 House Captains, in conjunction with class teachers. This provides a visual record of weekly physical activity and an opportunity to discuss with students the benefits of being active daily and establishing healthy habits. K-2 students receive a Gold award at the end of the Challenge.

MESSAGE FROM THE YMCADear Families,

It saddens me to write this to you all but t the end of today I will be leaving Elanora Heights OSHC. This was not an easy decision to make, as I have built close relationships with your children and your families. This decision was made due to a job opportunity I have been given in London, England, and I will be moving there very soon, going for over a year. I have enjoyed working, playing and talking with all your children, and I will be sad to leave.

Thank you for welcoming me into your school and trusting me to help shape your children. This job has been a fantastic experience for me and your children have made it very special.

As Term 3 fast approaches, you will continue to see Grace Fletcher (Coordinator) at the service, and she will be working together alongside our new Educational Leader, Grace Hull. I know these two girls will continue to run the service with dedication and passion, connecting with every single child and their families, making your experience a pleasant one.

Please keep sharing your thoughts and communicating with us, as we will make this transition as smooth as possible for you all.

Thank you for all your kindness and patience.

Your sincerely,

Rebecca Gigliotti (2IC and Educational Leader)
