Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

Make Your Own LunchThis week we are continuing our activities on nutrition with a talk by our nutritionist and school parent Anna Lynch. Participating students get to taste different foods and make their own lunch using healthy foods prepared by our parent helpers. I would like to thank Anna and the parent helpers for giving up their time to assist and Mrs Cullen for her hard work and organisation.

Planning for 2016We are beginning to plan for 2016 and need to know as accurately as possible the number of students attending our school so we can organise classes and teachers for classes. If you will not be attending Elanora Heights PS in 2016 please complete the form on page 3 of this newsletter or contact the front office. Thank you for letting us know about your intentions.

Kinder OrientationThis is just a quick reminder that the orientation for our 2016 Kindergarten students begins next week. If you are unsure about the day in which your child should attend please call the front office. If you know of anyone who still hasn’t enrolled their child please ask them to call us as soon as possible.

White RibbonOur White Ribbon Day is being organised by Mr Reid. Here are Mr Reid’s views on why the White Ribbon Program is important.

“White Ribbon’ is one of the most important causes to get behind as a primary school teacher. School is a micro community and the students are citizens in training. In order to be worthwhile citizens who help the larger community be a safe, healthy environment, people need to behave with respect. Primary school is the perfect time to help foster that ideal as our ‘citizens’ are learning the skills, concepts and strategies to function in the larger community. If the message of respect is loud and clear through awareness-raising events and activities across the community, our students may help reverse the negative trend towards more violence in our society.”

P&C MeetingDon’t forget that our next P&C meeting is this Wednesday, 21st October at 7:15pm in the staffroom. I look forward to seeing you there.

Student AchievementYesterday three of our students who are members of the Northern Sydney Symphonic Wind Ensemble played at the giant arch at Jenolan Caves. Max B (6S), Ruby W (6P) and Aisha A (5/6R) performed magnificiently. Congratulations to all of you!

A special performanceDon’t forget that this Sunday, 25th October, Elanora Heights PS is presenting an afternoon of music at Pittwater RSL featuring special guests the Royal Australian Navy Band Sydney. Our Training, Intermediate and Senior Bands will also be performing so come along and join in the fun. The performances start at 3pm and all money raised will go to support students at our school. Tickets can be purchased at www.trybooking.com/156139

Make Your Own Lunch – Monday, 19th October and Tuesday, 20th, Years 3 - 6A huge thank you to all the parents who are helping with Make Your Own Healthy Lunch. Particular thanks to our nutritionist, Anna Lynch, food coordinators Kate Hickson and Kirsty Bell who are buying food for over 250 lunches, and to Katie Dutton who is helping with the educational experience. In addition, the following volunteers are preparing the food for the students to make their wraps or sandwiches:Rachel Hopkins, Kerry Taylor, Sharri Boucher, Melissa Karlsson, Rebecca Churn, Nicole Maulguet, Anna Buono, Barb La Ganza, Nicole Maulgue, Mardee Thomas.

Thanks are also due to the NSW Government’s LiveLifeWell@School program which has given us a grant contributing to the costs. Eve Clarke, a Health Education officer with the project, is visiting today to attend a session – and bring some surprise suits – ask your children if they had any unusual visitors at lunch! Tomorrow we expect the Manly Daily photographer so look out for an article.

Those students who choose to participate in the follow-up home challenge will bring the record cards home on the day of their session. We do hope you’ll take this opportunity to encourage their independence and development of healthy choices.

Today and tomorrow all students in Years 3-6 will participate in a half-hour nutrition lesson with Anna. This input gives you a great opportunity to discuss nutritional choices with your children. For conversation starters, here are important points Anna will be raising:• The difference between natural and processed foods• Why processed foods are usually not so good for us and should only be eaten occasionally.• The importance of minimising sugar, salt and artificial additives• How natural, unprocessed foods give us better nutrition with “clever” rather than “empty” calories that give

us energy for longer• How every lunch needs protein, carbohydrate and fresh vegetables/fruit• Why water is the best drink and juice and other drinks should only be occasional.

Below are two of the slides Anna will be using. Hope you find this project worthwhile with your children.
