Soda Spray

• Materials: 2L bottle of Diet Coke, 2 Mentos candies

Soda Spray

• Results: – the diet coke

erupted out of the bottle when the candies were added

Page 6: Our Precious Air! Miss Laverty 2012 *** Experiments, lesson and work sheet adapted from the Edmonton Public curriculum book***

Soda Spray

• Inferences:– Soda pop has carbon dioxide molecules in it– Mentos have lots of tiny craters on the surface – When the carbon dioxide molecules attach to the

candy they turn into carbon dioxide gas, which escapes out of the bottle

– Carbon dioxide is just one of the gases that make up air

Gone to Rust

• Inferences:– Rusting uses oxygen– Once all of the oxygen is used up, no more rusting

will occur

Our Precious AIR!

• Air is made up of a mixture of gases. Nitrogen represents 78 %, oxygen makes up 21% and argon, carbon dioxide and other trace gases make up 1% together. Represent these numbers in a pie chart and bar graph.
