There are many types of maps.. There are two main types...

A physical map shows elevation.   Elevation is how high a place is above sea level.   Some physical maps use different colors or shadings to show the elevation of the land.   The map key shows the color or shade of the elevation.

A book of maps is called an atlas.

Most globes and maps have a grid to help you locate places.

Latitude lines are drawn east-west around a globe.    These lines are parallel to the equator, which means they are always the same distance apart and they never meet.    For this reason, latitudes are also called parallels.   

Longitude lines are drawn north-south around a globe.   All these lines come together at the North and the South Poles.  

They are not parallel. They are also

called meridians. .

The geographic center of New York is located in Madison County, 12 miles S of Oneida and 26 miles SW of Utica.

New York borders five states. They are Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Jersey ,Massachusetts, and Connecticut. New York borders two great lakes. They are Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

New York also borders the Atlantic Ocean.

There are three major rivers running through New York. The Genesee River,the Mohawk River and the Hudson.

The St. Lawrence Seaway is a waterway that was created for ships from the Atlantic Ocean to have access to the Great Lakes.Through a series of locks and channels ships can be raised and lowered.

The largest lake that is completely within New York's borders is Lake Oneida.

The highest point in New York State is Mt. Marcy. It is 5,344 feet high. It is in the Adirondack Mountains.

New York has 62 counties, and that number includes the five counties (boroughs) of New York City. Can you identify the counties that surround Erie County?

Andrew Mark Cuomo is an American politician who is the 56th and current Governor of New York. A member of the Democratic Party, Cuomo was elected Governor in 2010, holding the same position his father Mario Cuomo held from 1983 to 1994.

New York's official flag was adopted in 1901. The flag has a deep blue background. It pictures Liberty (she symbolizes freedom) and Justice (she symbolizes justice before the law). Liberty is holding a pole with a liberty cap, and has a discarded crown at her feet (which represents freedom from Britain after the Revolutionary War). Justice is blindfolded and is holding the scales of justice. A shield between them pictures the sun, hills, and 2 boats sailing on the Hudson River. Over the shield there is a globe and a bald eagle. Under them all is a white, flowing ribbon that reads "EXCELSIOR" (meaning "Ever Upwards").

New York was the 11th state in the USA; it became a state in 1788.
