Our mission Music at Matrix is a series of concerts organised by Rossella Rubini at Matrix Arts Centre. Matrix is an arts educational charity which provides a warm and friendly environment for children and adults to explore the arts. Founded by Lindsay MacKenzie and George Taylor in 1989, the school has been providing a refreshing musical start to hundreds of students. This concert series aims to enrich and broaden the cultural activities available to the local community, and to foster students’ engagement with music by exposing them to high-calibre, professional musicians. The beautifully simple and intimate concert room, along with our new reception area, makes Matrix Arts Centre a music venue worth visiting. Our wish is also to support the music profession at large, ensuring performers receive appropriate remuneration for their work, reflecting their perseverance, passion and dedication. Anna Rosaria Valanzuolo - piano

Postcards from Italy

The well established string ensemble brings us to Italy through the Trio in Eb Major by Donizetti and the exuberant Trio in A by Ricordi. Other suggestive images of their own country are projected through Aus Italien op.105 by Sternberg, who let us smell the air in Venice, touch the brio in Naples and admire the Alps.

(Post) Romanticism in music

The violin and piano duet plays some of the celebrated classics from the violin repertoire such as Brahms’ Sonata in G Major no.1, Elgar’s Chansons op. 15 and as well as Frank Bridge’s Three pieces. Interestingly, the programme also includes music by three female composers: Clara Schumann, Rebecca Clarke and Lili Boulanger.

Folklore

This well-recognised duet explores folk songs from different European countries, amazingly arranged as classical music compositions by four artists: Poulenc, Britten, Pizzetti and de Falla. The duet has recently launched their first CD, comprising pieces by Pizzetti.

Welcome to Music at MatrixFollowing the success of our 2018 series which marked the re-launch of Music at Matrix, we are pleased to offer a greater variety of music genres in the 2019 series. We have classical music ensembles and a special fusion of folk and ethnic styles.

The season kicks off in September with an interactive event for younger listeners.

The autumn brings an Italian string trio, followed by a violin and piano duet in the winter. Spring will be celebrated with another ensemble (mezzo soprano and piano), and towards the summer we will welcome a creative duet which combines original and British folk songs with African rhythms and instruments.

We look forward to welcoming you to some, if not all of our events.

Rossella Rubini, Artistic Director

Captain Digorie Piper and his Merry Medieval Pirates

This is an interactive performance for children, with storytelling and audience participation. The ensemble will introduce the instruments of the Tudor period and perform music by Antony Holborne and Thomas Forde. You are invited to come suitably attired for life at sea as a Sea-Dog pirate, and be prepared to dance, sing and be merry!

Music across continents

This concert will include a selection of original songs as well as original interpretations of folk songs from the British Isles - all with an African twist. Our musicians will take us through shifting atmospheres, ballads and toe-tappers. A rich programme of music by two very accomplished musicians with music spanning across two continents.
