Reflecting on God's Word When you compare the apostles before and after Jesus death, you can see that not only did something special happen to Jesus at his resurrection, but a wonderful change took place in the apostles as well. Up until the death of Jesus, the apostles did not come off very well. When the chips were down, they ran. But after the Lord has risen and appeared to them, we get a very different picture. In the Acts of the Apostles Luke gives us the most detailed description of what went on after the Holy Spirit descended upon this little community praying in the upper room. The most obvious gift was courage, a word that has the same root as "heart." They were given a new heart. The Holy Spirit breathed new life into them and gave them a heart passionately in love with Christ, on fire to preach the gospel. And so they went to the heart of their city, the temple, and there they preached and taught about Jesus, witnessing to him as the Messiah, the Holy and Righteous One, the Author of Life. They performed "many signs and wonders" (Acts 5:12), healing the sick and casting out unclean spirits. There they were arrested and taken to prison and beaten, only to return to the temple and do it all again, and be arrested again. Through all this they were joyful. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is remembered for saying that perhaps he would believe in our redeemer if we Christians looked a little more redeemed. Do you?

Reflexionemos la palabra de Dios Cuando comparamos a los apóstoles antes y después de la muerte de Jesús podemos ver que no sólo le ocurrió algo especial a Jesús en su resurrección, sino que un cambio maravilloso se dio también en los apóstoles. Hasta la muerte de Jesús los apóstoles no estaban muy bien parados que digamos, pues a la hora de la verdad lo que hicieron fue correr. Pero después que el Señor resucitó y se les apareció tenemos un cuadro bien distinto. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Lucas nos da la descripción más detallada de lo que pasó después de que el Espíritu Santo descendiera sobre esta pequeña comunidad orante. El don más obvio fue el valor (coraje), una palabra que tiene la misma raíz latina que "corazón". Se les concedió un corazón nuevo. El Espíritu Santo sopló una vida nueva en ellos y les dio un corazón apasionado por el amor de Cristo, inflamado para predicar el evangelio. Y así fueron al templo, el centro de su ciudad, y allí predicaron y enseñaron acerca de Jesús dando testimonio de él como el Mesías, el Justo, el Autor de la Vida. Ellos realizaron "muchos signos y prodigios" (Hechos 5:12), curando a los enfermos y expulsaban a los espíritus inmundos. Allí fueron arrestados, llevados a prisión y azotados; mas, una vez que los soltaron, regresaron al templo para volver a hacer lo mismo y ser arrestados de nuevo. Durante todo eso se mantenían alegres. Hay una frase que se recuerda del filósofo Friedrich Nietzsche: "Creeré en el Redentor cuando los cristianos se vean un poco más redimidos". Y a ti, se te ve redimido?

INFANT BAPTISM PREPARATION
The Infant Baptism Preparation Program ministers to parents who request that their children be baptized at St. John’s. The Baptismal team interviews parents and welcomes them into the parish community. We strive to support parents in their most important endeavor, initiating their children into the faith. Parents are asked to attend one two-hour class and the communal baptism. El programa de Preparación para el Bautismo asiste a los padres que piden que sus hijos sean bautizados en nuestra parroquia. Are you interested in being part of the Youth Mass Celebration? Every 3rd Sunday of each month at the 2:00 p.m. Spanish Mass, the youth help coordinate the Mass celebration, from lectors to helping with the collection, it’s a wonderful experience to be more involved in our community and give ourselves to God. Guadalupano ministry
1 The Guadalupano Ministry invites you to accompany them to pray the Rosary every 12th of each month at 7:00 pm in front of the image of the virgin that is outside the church.
2. We already began on Sundays to take the image of the virgin to ask for priestly vocations. Families that want to take her a week to their home can register with María Luisa Torres or they can call (510) 938-7612.
3 All those who would like to be part of this ministry are also welcome.

Bible study
Saint John is proud to announce an in-depth bible study starting May 6th organized by Deacon Noe and supported by Fr. Joseph and Fr Sergio.
The Bible Timeline:
The Story of Salvation” by Jeff Cavins. This study goes beyond last years' study. It is a 24-session study on Monday at 7pm, that will be completed toward the end of October. The number of participants will be limited to 50 mainly due to capacity of the classroom. We will break up into small groups with facilitators to get into in-depth discussions. The cost is roughly $34.95 plus tax per work book. Please call the office for further details.

San Juan se enorgullece en anunciar un profundo estudio bíblico que comienza el 6 de mayo, organizado por el Diacono Noe y apoyado por Fray José y el Padre Sergio.
