About the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary?

Today we celebrate the feast day of The Most Holy Name of Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary is our parish’s patron saint under the title Star of the Sea, and the feast of her holy name is our parish’ patronal feast.

There are various feast days of Mary in the Church’s calendar, each of which recalls some aspect of who she is or what she has done in salvation history. The feast of The Most Holy Name of Mary aims to remind us of two things:

1. The special blessings and privileges bestowed on Mary by God, making her name something to be treated with love and reverence; and

2. Her powerful intercession for all who call on her name to pray for her help.

The choice of this feast as our special parish feast day was a logical one, given our origins and history as a parish under the care of the Marist Fathers, whose motto is Sub Mariae Nomine (“In Mary’s Name”). In striving to “think as Mary, judge as Mary, feel and act as Mary in all things,” to celebrate Mary’s holy name as our parish feast day is the perfect choice.

Today as we thank God for his blessings on our parish and ask his continued grace and protection, let us give thanks to our Blessed Mother and always strive to honour her holy name by our Christian way of life.

A RELATIONSHIP OF CARE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT In Laudato Si (LS). Pope Francis says, “Creation can on-ly be understood as a gift from the outstretched hand of the Father of all and as a reality illuminated by the love which calls us together into universal commun-ion” (LS 76). Importantly he reminds us that the good-ness of creation was entrusted to humans, the only creatures created "in God's image and likeness … man and woman" (Gn 1:27), who were put "in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it" (Gn 2:15), meaning to live from it but also with it, and to take its fruits while car-ing for it (LS 67).” Therefore, a Catholic understanding of our relationship with the environment is grounded in the actions of “caring, protecting, overseeing and persevering” (LS 67). Any attitude of having absolute domination over the earth and all creatures that has led to unbridled exploitation and destruction is wrong (LS 67). Pope Francis encourages us to have a caring relationship with the environment so we can become more aware of God’s constant presence and God’s tender love for us and all of creation (LS86). He quotes some of the bishops from around the world;

• The bishops of Brazil: nature not only manifests God but is also a locus of his presence and that “the Spirit of Life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him” (LS 88).

• The Bishops of Canada: “From panoramic vistas to the tiniest living forms nature is a constant source of awe. It is a continuing revelation of the divine” (LS 85).

• The Bishops of Japan: “To sense each creature singing the hymn of its existence is to live joyfully in God’s hope and love” (LS 85).

SAFEGUARDING SUNDAY 2021

This weekend, the Catholic Church in Australia marks Safeguarding Sunday, on which we pray for those who have been abused, their families and support-ers. We recognise and apologise for the harm done by priests, religious and lay people in Church settings. We recommit to practices that support survivors and make the Catholic Church and its ministries the safest possible place for children and people at risk.

You can find out more about the Church’s work in this area at www.catholic.org.au/safeguardingsunday

PRAYER

Gracious God, you love and care for all of your

children, especially the smallest and most vulnera-

ble. We entrust to you the lives of children and

adults at risk who have been sexually abused, and

whose trust and innocence have been destroyed.

Help us to hear their cries of pain and to take re-

sponsibility for those whose lives have been bro-

ken. Help us to recognise the hurt felt by those

wounded by abuse, and the failure to be heard.

We pray that with the help of your grace commu-

nities and families will find understanding and sup-

port, so that now and in the future their wounds

may be healed and they may find lasting peace.

Let your grace and love fall gently now upon our

children and adults at risk, giving them the inner

strength peace and resilience to seek out assistance

when required.

We ask this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the uni-

ty of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

The HOLY NAME OF MARY

The Power of Her Name

St. Alphonsus de Liguori

After the most sacred name of JESUS, the name of MARY is so rich in every good thing,

that on earth and in heaven there is no other from which devout souls receive so much grace, hope, and sweetness ….

“because it alone will suffice to cure them of all their evils;” and “there is no disorder, however malignant, that does not immediately yield to the power of the HOLY NAME OF MARY.” (Pray the Rosary Daily)
