DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justi-cia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, contin-uaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienestar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad par-roquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miembros.

OLQP MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when

entering the church and encouraged to do so again

SUCCESS STORY FROM MEDOR: David Beaugeste is from Medor. He attended primary and secondary school there. He then received a government-sponsored scholarship to attend medical school at the State Universi-ty of Haiti. He has completed med school and internship and is currently doing the required year of community service. He plans to spe-cialize in internal medicine or OB/GYN and to practice in Haiti. He attributes his success to the excellent educational foundation he received in Medor and is eternally grateful to OLQP for its support of Medor schools. WOW!

OLQP’S ISIDORE’S GARDEN

A robust team of 10 volunteers took care of this summer’s

Isidore’s Garden, which grows vegetable to supplement the

weekly food pantry distribution. From April to late October,

the team planted, watered, and harvested the vegeta-

bles. The approximate yield this summer

was about 300 + peppers, 220 + toma-

toes, 15-20 quarts of green beans, a few

dozen cucumbers, and a few pounds of

okra and tomatillos, and loads of zinnias.

The garden will be put to rest for the win-

ter and be replanted in April 2021.

on the topic of Stewardship. There is no time requirement for

your reflection and no virtual meeting to join. Wherever you

are, whatever you are doing, please pause for your reflection

HISTORIA DE UN ÉXITO DE MEDOR: David Beaugeste es de Medor. Él asistió a la escuela primaria y la secundaria allí. Él entonces recibió una beca patrocinada por el gobierno para asistir a la escuela de medicina de la Universidad Estatal de Haití. Él ha completado la escuela de medicina y el internado y actualmente está completando el año requerido de servicio a la comunidad. EL JARDÍN DE ISIDORO DE OLQP

Un equipo robusto de 10 voluntarios se encargó del Jardín de Isidoro este verano, donde se cosechan vegetales para complementar la distribución semanal de la despensa de alimentos. De abril a finales de octubre, el equipo sembró, regó y cosechó los vegetales. Aproximadamente se

recogieron más de 300 ajíes, más de 220 tomates, de 15 a 20 cuartos de galón de habichuelas verdes, unas cuantas docenas de pepinos, unas cuantas libras de quimbombó y tomatillos y muchas zinnias. El jardín descansará durante el invierno y se volverá a sembrar en abril del 2021.

11TH VIRGINIA IMMIGRANT ADVOCATES SUMMIT (VIRTUAL)

This year’s event - Tuesday and Wednesday, November 17th and 18th, 9:00am to 1:10pm -- will be a two-day virtu-al summit that will allow attendees to engage with speakers on topics important for immigrant communities in Virgin-ia. The summit will also provide a post 2020 presidential election debriefing and its impact on changes to federal immigration law like changes to the public charge rule and protecting the DACA and TPS programs. We will also dis-cuss the politics and strategies for pushing for comprehen-sive immigration reform. THANKSGIVING FOOD DROP OFF -- DRIVE THRU! To keep everyone safe and healthy, we will have a drive

thru drop off for the Adopt a Family Thanksgiving pro-

gram. Drive to the back of Father Ray Hall where a team of

teens will take your food donations out of your trunk or

back seat while wearing gloves and a mask. Please remain

in your car and just pop the trunk or unlock the door. We

are very grateful for your donations and want to keep eve-

ryone safe. Drive thru will be open Sat and Sun, November

21 and 22, from 11am to 5pm.

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… As we continue to move to the end of the litur-gical year our readings remind us that one day the world will end...Christ will return…but when? Some Christians routinely (and wrongly) announce the return of Christ…they seem to forget that Jesus clearly said that no one, not even “He” knew when it would happen! And yet there are those who continue to claim to know the date and time.

Remember the “Jesus is coming on May 21st” billboards that dotted the highways a few years ago? In today’s 2nd reading, St Paul warns that the end will come like a “thief in the night,” and “knowing” when Christ will come is not the point…but rather it is all about being ready when Christ returns! Am I ready?

At the center of the readings is a message of total reliance upon the unbelievable mercy and boundless love of God. It is about keeping our hearts and minds open to God’s presence in our daily lives and in the world around us! The psalmist reminds us that God is our portion and cup, our inherence and therefore our hearts are glad and our souls rejoice…for we are God’s beloved! By keeping God at the center of our daily lives we indeed will be ready if the world were to end in our times. Because of the love and mercy of our God we need not fear “the

end” for we will be transformed into beings that shine like the stars in the heav-ens! Through Christ we have inherited eternal life and each of us is a part of “the great cloud of witnesses” who give glory to God.

I cannot fail to mention that we find ourselves in a moment of a report of outrageous, inap-propriate and unacceptable abuse by the for-mer Cardinal Theodore McCarrick who joins other clerics and lay men who used their posi-tions of power to abuse women, children and even other men. Part of “being ready” is stand-ing up to injustices, speaking out against all forms of abuse, misogyny, racism and bigotry, recognizing the dignity of all women, children and men of all colors and races and creeds! And I believe we best can do that when we keep God at the center of our daily lives. When we stand with our sisters, our chil-dren and our brothers who have been abused and exploited, we actively build up the Reign of God in the here and now, “we stand ready”, we more fully live out our identity as the Body of Christ! The Challenge:

• The days and weeks following the November 3rd election may become the most divisive period in modern U.S. his-tory—no matter who wins, a nd particularly if there is a dispute about who won and accusations of stealing the elec-tion.

• Whether jubilant or bitter about the outcome, Americans will be tempted to embrace The Four Horsemen of Polari-zation: Stereotyping, Dismissing, Ridicule, and Contempt for their fellow citizens who voted the other way.

The Opportunity: Before the election, invite Americans to reflect on how we want to regard those who vote differ-ently—with malice or respect?—and to pre-commit to participating in post-election gatherings to bring people together instead of further divide us. Note: this is not about covering over strong political differences or encouraging people to support whoever wins the election, but about a commitment to respect the humanity of those who differ from us and to forge connections across differences.

OLQP’s Response:

• In coordination with Braver Angels events being carried out around the country aimed at bridging the partisan and societal divides, OLQP will host its own virtual peace dialogues to help our community cope with the outcome of the election—whatever their political perspective—and support deeper compassion and understanding for their neighbor.

• The first two events will consist of dialogues intended for parishioners to give people a collective opportunity to deal with strong emotions and move through them towards commitment to holding malice towards none.

• The first event, for those who voted Republican in this election, will take place on December 2. The second event, for those who voted Democrat, in this election, will take place December 3. Please register your participation through this link. We ask that you only attend one of these events—the one corresponding to the party you voted for in this election.

• The third event—one aimed at bringing all parishioners together from across the political spectrum—will take place at a future date in December or early January (once a definitive outcome has been established). • From these gathering will come plans to work with one another to build the capacity of We the People to depolarize our politics and forge a new citizenship.

Black Catholic History Month began November 1

The OLQP parish theme is “Brokenhearted and Bound in the Lord!”

We celebrate this month with the 23rd Annual Minkisi

Retreat (Nov. 14), and a series of articles in the parish

bulletins written by Black Catholic leaders and the

parish Minkisi ministry.

“Black Lives Matter in the Worshipping Church”, an excerpt by Kim R. Harris. “*Were you there when they crucified my Lord?…”

…Black Catholic women know the view of the world from under and on the cross. It is in response to these experiences that our African traditions, our African American practices, our deep rela-tionship with Jesus, our Black ways of being and doing manifest in cries, hums, moans, rocking, patting our feet and lifting our hands. We bring our wholly functioning, fully active and participating selves to the church as example and as gift.

The church needs to hear, listen and respond to the voices of Black Catholic women during this season because the cries in the streets are the sorrows of our hearts; because Black lives matter in the church as we come to our home parishes, Catholic schools, univer-sities, hospitals, religious communities and ministries with con-cerns and challenges to the individual, communal, institutional and systemic racism we experience. We find racism in our church to be as deep and wide, as historic and contemporary, as any of the racist policies and unjust civil structures of our nation. As our brothers and sisters cried out before us, “We can’t breathe.”

Our yearning for breath, for Jesus in the assembly, the word and the sacrament is most painful when our experiences, our needs and our lives are not seen or heard by the leadership and mem-bership of our church. In the non-Black congregations where most of us worship, we feel unwelcomed by our white Catholic brothers and sisters. They seem uncomfortable with our Black Catholic bodies in nearby pews, our Black song presented for full and active participation by the assembly, our Black Catholic leaders as preachers, catechists, priest, deacons, religious sisters and broth-ers, and our Black worship cultures on equal footing within other historical Catholic worship cultures.

Yet, it is during this time in particular, that the very cultural prac-tices rejected by the “builders” could be a cornerstone for worship during the time of pandemic and beyond.

One place to begin and one challenge we now share with all of our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers is within the very breath of our liturgies during this time of pandemic. As our worship sites begin to reopen, church leaders, musicians and congregations mourn the loss of choirs, currently noting the dangers of singing together. On webinars and within national and local guidelines, congregations are advised to restrict music leadership to that of a cantor and an organ or piano.

Gregorian chant Mass settings and European American music are suggested as a safer method of participating together. Black wom-en and men, musicians and ministers, reflect, as always, that our practices and traditions are not seen, heard, appreciated or dis-cussed at this time when creativity is essential.

Online communications have opened paths for communities and people to come to know each other, learn from each other, teach each other and gift each other in deeper ways. Yet, European American ways are suggested as the default style for safer litur-gies.

I suggest that a keen-eyed liturgies, open to learning within di-verse groups of practitioners and exploring ideas for worship with-in the “new normal,” would gain valuable knowledge form practic-es honed in hush harbor prayer gatherings and on the cabin floors of the enslaved, from up in the church balconies and cathedral basements of the segregated and in the culturally cued worship of contemporary Black Catholic congregations; humming, swaying, patting feet, lifting hands and remembering the quiet, yet fully participating worship ways of Black Catholic congregations. There are unspeakable joys as well as spaces for unimaginable lament to be found in the worship traditions of Black Catholic cultures.

Undoubtedly, there are safer music and worship practices within the cultures of other Catholic peoples of the Americas who are also not considered to be “traditional” within dominant Catholic culture. These joys and laments are not to be culturally appropri-ated, but to be shared in a “new-normal” conversation in opposi-tion to cultural domination. The challenge of gathering worship assemblies, in person, online and across the country in diverse gatherings, could offer opportunities for our church to find safer and welcoming ways to breathe more freely, together.

Your generous Thanksgiving donation last year helped to provide 548 families with a holiday meal. Given COVID-19, we expect to

serve at least that many this year.

In anticipation of having to order large quantities of various items and wanting to avoid multiple shopping trips, we are starting

donations are welcome and much appreciated.

In the interest of food safety in a COVID-19 world, please donate store bought & packaged pies only. We hope to return to the

annual pie baking event next year. Also, because we must reserve refrigerator and freezer space for turkeys, no frozen or refriger-

ated pies. Turkeys take up every inch of space we have campus-wide!

We are determined to provide Thanksgiving in a safe, socially distanced manner. To that end, we will have teams outside Father

Ray Hall on the Saturday and Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 21st & 22nd running Operation Drive-by Turkey so you just

drive up and a volunteer can get the items out of your car. More details to follow.

Similarly, COVID-19 prevents us from having the long-standing OLQP tradition of parishioners coming together to organize,

sort, pack and distribute Thanksgiving. However, we still need volunteer help; some of which can be done from home. Here

is a sample of volunteer jobs we need help with:

Bulk ordering from various stores once we know what we need to purchase (more than 1 volunteer)

Bulk order pickups (likely many volunteers)

Drivers to deliver meals (drop at doorstep with text upon arrival; about 5 volunteers)

Donut/snack delivery for volunteers working Saturday, Sunday & Monday

This year, because many are in need, we will have a parish only registration for food baskets on Sunday, October 25. 2020 from

10am until 1pm in the lobby of the Ministry Center.

If you are unable to shop and would prefer to make a donation to our Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family program, you can do so safely

online here. Our estimated cost for the entire meal including turkey is $50.

volver al “pie-a-thon” el año próximo. También, debido a que tenemos que reservar espacio en refrigeradores y congeladores para

los pavos, no traigan pasteles congelados o refrigerados. Los pavos ocupan todo el espacio que tenemos disponible.

Estamos determinados a proveer para el Día de acción de gracias de una manera segura y con distanciamiento social. Con eso en

mente, tendremos equipos de personas afuera de Father Ray Hall el sábado 21 y el domingo 22 de noviembre, antes del Día de

acción de gracias. Esas personas estarán a cargo de “Operation Drive-by Turkey” para que conduzca su auto y una voluntaria o

voluntario recoja lo que tiene en el auto. Daremos más detalles en el futuro.

De la misma manera, COVID-19 nos prohíbe que tengamos la antigua tradición de reunir a miembros de la parroquia para organizar, ordenar, empacar y distribuir las donaciones. Sin embargo, esto no significa que no necesitamos sus esfuerzos voluntarios, y algunos se pueden hacer desde la casa. Aquí tienen ejemplos de cosas con las que necesitamos ayuda:
