2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

In Giving, We Receive

If you have not yet responded to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual

Appeal, there is still time to do so as the 2017 Appeal funds

are used to support ministries and programs through the

end of the diocesan fiscal year on June 30, 2018. Your gift

is a great blessing and valued so we can serve Christ by

serving his people. For your convenience, you can make an

online gift at www.2017appeal.org.

From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, During the time of Jonah the prophet, the ancient and enormous city, Ninevah (modern day Iraq, near Mosul) was about to be destroyed by God. The large city that took three days to travel through was near annihilation because it was an evil city. We know from Sacred Scripture that God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sinfulness, namely homosexual sin. He also destroyed most of the human race by a great flood during the time of Noah because the people became depraved. God was so disheartened by sinful humanity that He regretted the creation of man. However, God in His compassion sent Jonah the prophet to preach to the Ninevites. Jonah went through the city proclaiming, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” The Book of Jonah recalls how the people believed in God and they fasted and put on sackcloth, a sign of humility before God, and turned from their sinful ways. God in His wonderful mercy did not carry out His plan to destroy the sinful city of Nineveh. The story of Jonah and the Ninevites is our first reading this weekend, which is read alongside the Gospel of Mark. In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus also warns the people of His time, “(to) repent and believe in the gospel.” Like Jonah, Jesus was sent by the Father to a sinful generation. Again we see the great mercy of our God calling sinful humanity back to goodness and holiness. “Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: ‘This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.’” The Gospel recounts the calling of the Apostles, Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John, who were all fishermen, and would become the pillars of the Church. Jesus was sent by the Father to establish His kingdom, which alludes to the Kingdom of David but is realized in the Church. God has given us the gift of the Church so that we can experience His mercy. It is through the Church and her sacraments that we are given the grace to turn from our sinful ways and give joy to the Father’s heart. Parish Life: This Sunday we are showing our first film of our film festival in the parish hall at 2:00 pm. The theme for our four Sunday films is “Mary, the Mother of God.” This Sunday we will be showing the classic, “The Song of Bernadette.” There is no fee; there will be a short intermission with some light refreshments. Come and join us and enjoy the show and company. Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Pastor

One of the audio CDs in our Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk is "Angels Explained: What You Should Know About the Nine Choirs" by Dr. Mark Miravalle. As Professor of Theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, this talk teaches on the fascinating subject of

Angels. Why did God create angels? How are they different from humans? Are guardian angels found in Scripture? Discover the answer to these questions and many more as Mark Miravalle explains the nine choirs of angels, their differing roles and hierarchical order, and how much angels can help us if we only ask. There's also a bonus segment of the Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel. Each CD is just $4.
