OUR DEEPEST NEEDS The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contempo-rary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PROTECTING GOD’S

CHILDREN – SAFE ENVIRONMENT

All adult volunteers working with children or vulnerable adults in our diocese (including all catechists, teachers, coaches) must take a Protecting God’s Children Awareness Session, complete a background check and read 24 online bulletins (one per month for 24 months.) If you plan on working with either of these groups in the upcoming year, why not get started now on this process?

There is an online option for taking the Awareness Session in addition to a live session option with a trained facilitator. These sessions are offered in both English and Spanish. Step-by-step instructions to take the online training or to register for a live training session can be found at the diocese website http:// www.renodiocese.org/safe-environment or on our parish website olsparish.com and click on forms to download the Protecting God’s Children Volunteer Packet.

The program is more than just information about the wrong-doers; it is designed to help all of us recognize signs and behaviors of predators and as well as those who are being abused.

GIVING OF OUR TIME & TALENT

LETTER FROM THE BISHOP

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This year on August 1 & 2, we participate in the National Collection for the Black and Indian Missions. Your contributions support missionaries, here, in the United States who are evangelizing in Black and Indigenous Catholic communities.

It is only through the constant generosity of Church members that evangelization among Black and Native American, Inuit and Aleut communities has been possible for more than 125 years. Churches and schools in African American and Indigenous communities depend on annual evangelization grants to continue their programs and pastoral activities.

Our diocese benefits directly from this collection: Bishop Manogue Catholic High School receives a grant from the Black and Indian Missions. This grant helps with tuition assistance for Native American and African American students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to have a Catholic High School education.

Thank you for your prayerful support of the collection for the Black and Indian Missions.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph Calvo Bishop of Reno
