Please join us in prayer for :
1st Sunday of Lent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church March 1, 2020
From the Pastor:
There’s a reflection from an anthology of Anglo-Saxon spiritu-ality that can help us this first Sunday in Lent to reflect on to-day’s Gospel:
The Holy Spirit led [Jesus] willingly into that desert and He went there of his own free will so that he would allow the devil the presumption to begin to tempt Him.…He did this as an ex-ample for our lives that He wanted us to know how easily He could overcome the devil, not by His divine power alone but also through human righteousness. So likewise each person can overcome the devil if He lives his life in righteousness and in good works.
As soon as the Savior arrived in the desert, He fasted forty days and nights together. And after this He said he was hungry. In-deed, in this it was made manifest that He had a true body that might make Him hunger.
Jesus followed in the tradition of Moses and Elijah. Elijah in his fast would be fed by an angel and would be come to be filled with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, to reveal what would come.
This time of fasting is meant to bring us closer to Jesus. Spend more time with Him, being like Him in the desert, calling upon His help.
Don’t make this a casual Lent, make this a time for transfor-mation
With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

1st Sunday of Lent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church March 1, 2020
During the season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to
reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through per-
forming acts of fast and absti-nence. Lent begins on Ash
Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday
Fast and Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics. This is a serious matter within Church law. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
Fasting is an obligation from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Catholics ages 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able.
Abstinence means not eating meat, poultry or other foods prepared with meat or poultry products. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. This obligation contin-ues throughout our lives

“I am Pro-life “ Thoughts
from Rev. James Martin, S.J.
“I am pro-life. That means that I am not only
for the dignity of the human being from the moment of concep-
tion, but I am also for the dignity of the human being until the
natural end of life. For life does not end with birth. A person
who is truly pro-life is pro-all life, pro every stage of life, pro
every stage of life for every person. For all life is sacred, be-
cause all life is created by God.
That means that I support anything that helps a person live a
full, healthy, and satisfying life, in every part of the world. So I
am for care of the poor, for a living wage, for affordable health
care, for adequate housing, for a humane work environment, for
equal pay for women, for generous child care, for the support of
the aged and infirm.
That means I support caring for the marginalized among us:
the refugee and migrant, the homeless, the person with disabili-
ties, the single mother, women who are abused, minorities of
every kind who are persecuted, and all who feel left out, lonely,
ignored. “ Bulletin Emmanuel Catholic Church, Delray Beach FL. 2/16/20

“The Lives of Great Christians” (DVDs)

Sienna, St. Theresa of Calcutta, St. Paul, St. Francis of Assisi,
St. Augustine, Martin Luther, his name sake Martin Luther
King, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. We will view these Christian
lives from many perspectives, and see how people in radically

their strength and address their weaknesses in light of their call
to the gospel life,
Professor William R. Cook, Ph.D., Distinguished Teaching Pro-
fessor of History, State University of New York at Genesco will
be the presenter on DVD. During his career Dr. Cook has been
the recipient of many outstanding awards of excellence, pub-
lished several articles and books, and continues to teach and do
