Sacred Heart Catholic Church Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time–February 11, 2018
Reflection from the Pastor:
Lent is about losing weight, right? Although that’s a tempting idea,
we would miss the point of Lent completely if we treated it as a kind of
“Holy Weightwatchers”, no matter how saintly our
motivations. The real meaning of Lent is the same
meaning that Jesus gave his own time of preparation
in the desert: by fasting, prayer and penance, I
conform my life to His and not the other way
around. Fasting, prayer and penance are the means
to an end. A traditional Catholic practice is to
choose a penance, “something to give up for Lent”. As you choose your
penance in preparation for Ash Wednesday,
don’t think about what is the easiest or the
hardest. Think, “What can I give up or what
can I do that will remind me to seek the
Lord better and to love Him better?”
