Understanding My ValueTo My Church Community

Laura Humphries,Parish Life Coordinator

It is said that friendship doubles our joy and dividesour grief. That’s true: good news becomes better whenwe can share it, and the burden of sorrow is lighterwhen there is more than one person to carry it. This isthe straightforward counsel of St. Paul: “Rejoice withthose who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Rom12:15). Most of us feel pretty inadequate in the face ofanother’s suffering. We are afraid we might say thewrong thing or attempt to get out of the awkwardsituation by mouthing some platitude like, “I know howyou feel.” As daunting as this work of mercy appears, however, in one way it is the easiest to perform becauseoften the best comfort we can provide comes fromdoing and saying nothing, but just by being there withour grieving friend. There are no magic words thatmake the pain vanish, but there are the looks andtouches that say, “You’re not alone.” As with otherworks of mercy, this one calls for delicacy.

An excerpt from www.jubileeofmercy-eb.org

In my studies of death, dying and bereavement one ofthe most important things that we as friends or familycan do is listen. When we ask how are you doing, wemust really want to know and want to listen to themourner tell us. Telling the story over and over aboutthe loss is very helpful in getting through grief. Wedon’t really get over grief but we do get through it, withthe help of God, our faith, our families, our friends andwith time. No one grieves the same and there is nomagical time period for grief. For some people it cantake years to work through their grief and for othersjust months. The first few weeks after a loss mostpeople are operating on auto pilot, just going throughthe motions, I think this is God’s way of helping ussurvive the initial shock of loss of someone we love.Once reality sets in and we accept the death and beginto deal with life we begin to grieve and that is when weas friends or family need to check in and see how theperson grieving is doing. Initially after a loss there arelots of people around helping out but a few weeks laterpeople have moved on to another matter, that is whenwe can call and check in and see what we can do tohelp, when we can comfort the afflicted or sorrowful, remembering that our God is always with us and willhelp us no matter what. His appeal to us, as to theprophet of old, is: “Comfort, comfort my people, saysyour God” (Is 49:14).

Thank you for supporting our church!

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church inLatin America. In Peru, the 14 villages of Chazuta, inMoyobamba, are all located away from the city center, withthe most remote only accessible by boat. The faithful inthese communities do not have access to catecheticalformation, and members often feel separated from the life ofthe universal Church. Through a grant from the Collectionfor the Church in Latin America, the religious congregationof the Missionaries of Jesus was able to provide faithformation, spiritual retreats, and workshops to nearly 250people. Upon completion, participants were better equippedto help others deepen their faith and answer questions. Theprogram also renewed their sense of commitment to theirparishes and created stronger bonds within their ownfamilies. Through this program, members of the Chazutavillages felt the love and support of the universal Church. Please support programs like these and give generously innext week’s collection.
