Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000. There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T

. The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe. But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , . A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facili es to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B ,

C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is. You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well. I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I

B P The summer provides us, hopefully, with an opportunity to slow down a li le bit and to reflect upon our lives of faith. One means to make an effec ve evalua on of our lives of faith is to take the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconcilia on through individual confession. Bishop Serratelli’s ar cle on the Holy Father’s emphasis on the sacrament is a helpful means to encourage more frequent use of the sacrament by all of us. During the pon ficate of the warrior, Julius II, in 1510, Mar n Luther visited Rome. On entering the city, he dropped to his knees, exclaiming “Salve, Sancta Roma!” He was in awe of this great city. Here Peter and Paul had walked. Here both apostles preached the gospel. Here the Prince of the Apostles and the Apostle to the Gen les both died for the faith. Luther went to Rome with pious thoughts of martyrs and saints. He le the city disappointed. The young monk from Erfurt had found a city steeped in sin and corrup on. Luther’s stay in Rome le him with li le good to praise about the Eternal City. He is reported to have said, “If there be a hell, Rome is built over it.” Nothing escaped his s nging cri cism. Only one place was spared: the Hospital of the Holy Spirit. Both pilgrims and Romans held this hospital and its adjacent Church of the Holy Spirit in high esteem. Today, the Church of the Holy Spirit stands across the street from the world headquarters of the Jesuit order. It is one block south of the Via della Conciliazione and one block east of St. Peter’s Square. As early as the 8th century, a church stood on the site of the present church. It bore the name Santa Maria in Sassia, because pilgrims were coming from Saxony (Sassia). Here pilgrims from Northern Europe were welcomed to Rome and given both spiritual and material assistance. In the 12th century, Pope Innocent III ordered the very first hospital in Europe dedicated to the Holy Spirit to be built on this site. Thus, today’s Church of the Holy Spirit stands on a spot made sacred by a long history of bringing mercy to the body and the spirit of those in need. Pope Francis is a man of pastoral ac on. He has taken a cue from the history and loca on of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Sassia. On December 15, 2013, when he spoke of his program for pastoral reform, he made a surprising

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

request of the senior members of the Roman Curia. He asked them to take turns hearing confessions in this church located a few blocks away from their offices. The media and the masses have ins nc vely taken to the way that our Holy Father expresses the heart of gospel, the mercy of God, through visible ac ons. Images of the Pope’s reaching out to the marginalized, the poor and the disabled have warmed the hearts of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. While the media delights to headline his request made of the curia members to hear confessions, the same media give no a en on to the Holy Father’s words about the value of individual confession. When it comes to speaking about the mercy of God given to us in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, Pope Francis has spoken with great clarity; the Holy Father’s enthusias c advocacy for individual confession manifests that he understands the sacrament personally both as penitent and as priest. Again and again, (that is, on April 30, 2013; June 14, 2013; September 30, 2013; October 25, 2013; November 20, 2013; December 15, 2013,and February 19, 2014), the Pope has returned to the theme of individual confession. In the first few months of his pon ficate, I dare say, he has spoken about confession more than frequently than any other pope in the same me span. Beneath the headline-catching and common sense daily medita ons of our pastor pope, Francis has dished up a healthy por on of sound teaching about the need for confession. I wish to offer a brief overview of solid and needed encouragement that he has given to all of us. In his famous interview with the Italian Jesuit magazine Civilta Ca olica, Pope Francis, in characteris cally pointed style, said, “I see the Church as a field hospital a er a ba le.” A hospital for the wounded. This is the key to understand the Pope’s teaching on confession. It is precisely in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on that Christ “heals wounds and warms the hearts of faithful.” All of us are sinners. We are wounded and we need to bring our wounds to Christ for healing. The Pope has said that we may “think that going to confession is like going to the dry cleaners to get out a stain, but it isn’t. It’s an encounter with Jesus who waits for us to forgive us and offer salva on.” Today, in our age of individualism and subjec vism, many people, even faithful Catholics, believe that confession is not necessary. At his weekly general audience on November 20, 2013, Pope Francis confronted this misconcep on head on. He said, “Certainly, God forgives every repentant sinner, but the Chris an is bound to Christ and Christ is united to his Church. God, in his sovereign mercy, forgives everyone, but he wanted those who belong to Christ and his church to receive forgiveness through the community's ministers. Through the presence and words of a priest, penitents have the certainty of forgiveness in the name of the church.” The forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament of Penance is the fruit of the Paschal Mystery. On Easter Sunday night, the Risen Lord appeared to the disciples. They were locked in the Upper Room. “Peace,” he said to them. And, then he breathed on them the Holy Spirit, saying “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven” (Jn 20:21-23). That gi of peace through forgiveness of sins is given in the Church through the ministry of her priests. When we sin, we sin against God and one another. Every sin is not just a “me-and-God” affair. Our sins hurt one another. They dim the luster of the holiness of the Church, the Bride of Christ. In confession, the priest represents the whole Church and all those against whom we have sinned; this is why it is necessary to confess our sins before him. Very beau fully, the Holy Father reminds us that “forgiveness of our sins is not something we can give ourselves. I cannot say: I forgive my sins. Forgiveness is asked for, is asked of another, and in Confession we ask for forgiveness from Jesus. Forgiveness is not the fruit of our own efforts but rather a gi ; it is a gi of the Holy Spirit who fills us with the wellspring of mercy and of grace that flows unceasingly from the open heart of the Crucified and Risen Christ.”

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 6)

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor

To place ourselves humbly and honestly before a priest, to lay bare our soul, is not easy. Many people feel embarrassed at the idea of confessing their sins. Once again, with frank and direct speech, Pope Francis acknowledged this. He said, “Even embarrassment is good. It's healthy to have a bit of shame... it does us good, because it makes us more humble… The sacrament of reconcilia on is a sacrament of healing…To go to Confession…is to encounter the love of Jesus with sincerity of heart and with the transparency of children, not refusing, but even welcoming the “grace of shame” that makes us perceive God’s forgiveness.” The Pope urges us, “Don't be afraid of confession.” What be er me than Lent to make a good confession! A general confession of our sinfulness in a communal se ng may make us feel good. But, it is naming specific sins that we have commi ed, asking for forgiveness and receiving the absolu on from the priest that leads to true repentance and conversion. So important is the individual confessing his or her sins to the priest, that Pope John Paul II has taught that, “Individual and integral confession and absolu on are the sole ordinary means by which the faithful, conscious of grave sin, are reconciled with God and the Church” (Misercordia Dei, April 7, 2002). In light of the Pope’s teaching, it is good to recall what makes for a good individual confession and what does not. The penitent must approaches the priest in private, carrying only a repentant heart, the penitent approaches unaccompanied except for the powerful grace of the Holy Spirit that has led him or her to this moment, and confesses all mortal sins in so far as they can be recalled. If there are mortal sins, it is not enough simply to choose one or two. If there are no mortal sins to confess, it is not enough simply to express in a general way one’s sinfulness. The penitent must confess sins. Never is it permi ed for a family or group of individuals to approach a priest and together make a general statement of sinfulness. This does not cons tute the sacrament. In fact, it robs the individual of the gi that the Church is so eager to offer: the gi of personal encounter with our merciful Lord and the grace of true repentance and conversion. “Concreteness and honesty and a sincere ability to be ashamed of one’s mistakes,” Pope Francis reminds us, are essen al for making a good confession. “There are no shadowy lanes that can serve as an alterna ve to the open road that leads to God’s forgiveness, to the awareness, in the depths of the heart, of His forgiveness and His love.” Pope Francis wisely offers us the Church’s rich understanding of the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. He does not want us to be the elder son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, standing on the doorstep of the Father’s house and unable to fully par cipate in his banquet of love. And so, taking his teaching from the Word of God, he reminds us, “Confession of sins, done with humility, is something the Church requires of all of us.”

We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.
