T S O T “A ”

In last week’s gospel we heard John the Bap st proclaim that Jesus is the “Lamb of God” (John 1:35); soon a er the Bap st makes that pronouncement he is arrested by Herod An pas. The ministry of Jesus in Galilee begins in this drama c way with a message of repentance and the forces of those who will oppose him and his followers on the rise. As Jesus hears the news of the Bap st’s arrest he withdraws to Galilee, we can assume, to pray and gather his thoughts for what he inevitable knew was a difficult mission of sacrifice that was ahead of him. This withdrawal of Jesus to the Sea of Galilee is the fulfillment of a prophecy from Isaiah: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gen les, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen” (Ma hew 4:15-16). Jesus will restore to the light those who have been conquered by sin and have lost their way, this is what is to be drawn from Jesus beginning his ministry centered in Capernaum in the kingdom of the northern Israel that has been conquered by the Assyrians; his is the promise of restora on of God’s people to right rela onship with God. Not only that, the saving ministry of Jesus will encompass all people, including the Gen les. The message of Jesus for all people begins: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Ma hew 4:17). The call of Jesus is to a complete change of heart, the pu ng aside of all those things that are not in keeping with what God calls us to be. Jesus further adds to the dimensions of his preaching and ministry by calling others to follow him. The call to discipleship is always given by the Lord in the context of community from the very beginning of his ministry. Peter and his brother Andrew become the first called by the Lord. In a recent homily at daily Mass, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, spoke about the importance of having a proper apprecia on for a humble heart when we seek to draw closer to God and to be open to the grace of the Holy Spirit so that our communion with the Lord is first above all of our concerns. The Va can News Service provides the following summary of the Holy Father’s homily:

We need to safeguard our smallness in order to have a personal dialogue with God. In his homily Pope Francis reflected on the personal rela onship between God and his people - the small and humble - saying God always speaks to us on a personal level, using our names. ‘It’s never a dialogue between the powerful and the masses.’

The Pope noted how when God chooses people, ‘he always chooses those who are small’ and less powerful than the others. We tend to look at the outer appearance or power of people but God has his own different criteria. ‘He chooses the weak and gentle to confuse the powerful people in our world.’ One example of this, said Pope Francis, was when God chose David who was the smallest son, who didn’t count for his father and who had been sent out of the house to tend the sheep. Later David became king but he commi ed two serious sins. What did he do then? asked the Pope. David humbled himself, he returned to his smallness, confessed his sins to God, asked for pardon and did penance. In this way, said the Pope, ‘David safeguarded his smallness through his contri on, his prayer and his grief. The Pope explained how our Chris an loyalty is all about ‘safeguarding our smallness so that we can have a dialogue with God.’ That’s why, he con nued, ‘humbleness, gentleness and daily habits are so important in the life of a Chris an’ because it safeguards our smallness and pleases God. The Pope concluded by imploring God to give us the grace to safeguard our smallness before Him.

Ma hew tells us that the two brothers were “cas ng a net into the sea they were fisherman” (Ma hew 4:18). As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he gives these two brothers their call: “Come a er me, and I will make you fishers of men” (4:19). The call of Jesus to his disciples is always meant to be extended to others by those called. As we share our faith we grow in understanding of our own God given voca ons. To the call of Jesus there is only one response and Peter and Andrew provide the proper one: “At once they le their nets and followed him” (4:20). Following the call of Peter and Andrew, Jesus meets two more brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

The call of James and John from Jesus, if it is possible, is even more drama c than the call of Peter and Andrew: “immediately they le their boat and their father and followed him” (4:22). In this mission of Jesus to bring the message of salva on to all people, Jesus gradually begins the band of his followers, his disciples, and brings people into his company to help share God’s saving message with others. The Lord con nues to call others to himself in order to share the saving love of the Father with all those who respond to his call. Each of us has a different gi to put at the service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In his First Le er to the Corinthians, Saint Paul speaks of his own experience: “For Christ did not send me to bap ze but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emp ed of its meaning” (1 Corinthians 1:17). We are all called to carry out our voca on as unique and indispensable because it has been given to us by God. The call of Jesus will o en involve sacrifice and the carrying of a cross. We pray for the grace to bring others to Christ so that the call of Christ might con nue to shine forth in our day.

R H C

In a recent visit to Saints Elizabeth and Zachariah in Rome, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted that the bread that we receive in Holy Communion, in the Eucharist, is not ordinary bread but the Body of Christ. The Holy Father encourages us to remember that the Body of Christ strengthens us to do the work of Christ in the world. We do not receive simple bread when we receive Holy Communion; we receive the Bread of Life, the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Father notes:

And Jesus also gives us the strength to work. Doesn’t he? He sustains us! Good! In difficulty, doesn’t he? And also in our school tasks! He supports us, he helps us, he leads us, he sustains us. That’s it! Jesus always goes with us. Good. But listen, Jesus gives us strength. How does Jesus give us strength? You know this, you know that he gives us strength! Louder, I can’t hear you! In Communion he gives us strength, he really helps us with strength. He comes to us. But when you say, “he gives us Communion,” does a piece of bread make you so strong? Isn’t it bread? Is it bread? This is bread, but is what is on the altar bread? Or isn’t it bread? It seems to be bread. It is not really bread. What is it? It is the Body of Jesus. Jesus comes into our heart.

The Eucharist is the center of our lives as Catholics. Without the Eucharist there is no Church. The Eucharist is the living promise of Christ’s enduring presence with us. Just a reminder that we need to be especially reverent when we receive Holy Communion; reverence is found in the heart but our outward approach to the Eucharist and the manner in which we receive the Eucharist is important. We show a sign of reverence with a gentle bow before receiving Holy Communion and we place our le hand over the right and immediately receive the Body of Christ when it is distributed to us. No one should ever walk away carrying the host. Please remember to receive the host at once. Reverence for the Eucharist is an essen al of our faith. If you wish to receive the host on the tongue you may also do so. Immediately a er receiving the host you may receive from the chalice for the distribu on of the Precious Blood. Please do not try to dip the host into the chalice to receive through “in nc on;” reverence for the Precious Blood is important and, addi onally, one does not self-administer Holy Communion, the Eucharist is always received from another. In receiving either the Body of Christ or the Precious Blood of Christ, the Body and Blood are both received; in receiving the Eucharist under one form we receive under both. Both the Body and Blood of Christ are distributed so that the fullness of the Eucharis c meal is expressed. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes:

Since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharis c grace. For pastoral reasons this manner of receiving communion has been legi mately established as the most common form in the La n rite. But ‘the sign of communion is more complete when given under both kinds, since in that form the sign of the Eucharis c meal appears more clearly. ’This is the usual form of receiving communion in the Eastern rites (CCC, 1390).

We all appreciate what a gi the Eucharist is to us, we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, in the Eucharist and our

reverence for that gi should be clear. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us of the immense mystery that we become a part of in the celebra on of the Eucharist and the recep on of Holy Communion: “By the consecra on the transubstan a on of the

bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is brought about. Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substan al manner: his Body and his Blood, with his soul and his divinity” (CCC, 1413). As we approach the Lord in Holy Communion we make the effort to express the worship and reverence that is due to him.

Faith Formation Corner We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200. Cursillo 2018 A 3-Day Course in Christianity Cursillo is an international movement. Literally tens of thousands of Catholics have "made" a Cursillo and found it to be a life changing event in their adult

Cursillo is an experience that can give you a renewed understanding of our faith. Its goal is to make faith alive for those who participate in this course. If you are looking for such an experience, there are dates available for both women and men.

Men’s 193rd Cursillo Thursday evening, May 3-Sunday, May 6, 2018

Women’s 177th Cursillo Thursday evening, May 31-Sunday, June 3, 2018
