The barbarism and severity of pagan Rome had begun to reach a fever pitch. It would soon lead to a blood lust. The newborn Christian Church, faithful to the One who had given Himself for the life of the world, continued the work of His redemption. According to the Christian tradition, Deacon Lawrence, knowing that the fervor of Valerians' hatred was extending to all Christians who owned property, began to give it all away. He distributed the money and treasures of the Church to the city's poor believing the clear admonition of the Savior that they were blessed and especially loved by Him. Valerian wanted to go after Deacon Lawrence but was delighted he asked for three days to gather all the gold and silver of the Church together in one central place! His pride and greed filled blinded him from seeing the truth. Then, he went throughout the city and invited all the beloved poor, handicapped, and misfortunate to come together. They were being supported by a thriving early Christian community which understood the Gospel imperative to recognize Jesus in the poor. When Valerian arrived, Deacon Lawrence presented him with the true gold and silver of the Church, the poor! The emperor was filled with rage! Beheading was not enough for this Christian Deacon. He ordered Deacon Lawrence to be burned alive in public, on a griddle. Witnesses recorded the public martyrdom. The deacon cheerfully offered himself to the Lord Jesus and even joked with his executioners! The tradition records massive conversions to the Christian faith as a result of the holy life and death of one Deacon who understood the true heart of his vocation. He was poured out, like his Master, Jesus the Servant, in redemptive love, on behalf of others. It is still said to this day that all of Rome became Christians as a result of the faithful life, and the death, of this one humble deacon. The life and death of Deacon Lawrence speaks the timeless message of the Gospel to all who will listen. Whether we are ever called to shed our blood in what has traditionally been called red martyrdom or simply called to offer our sacrifices daily in a continuous life of poured-out love, known as white martyrdom, we continue the redemptive work of the Lord through our daily Christian lives and participation in the life of the Church. DEACON ST. LAWRENCE

The year was 258 A.D. It was a difficult beginning for what would become the First Christian Millennium. Hostility against the early followers of Jesus Christ was growing. The barbarism and severity of pagan Rome had begun to reach a fever pitch. It would soon lead to a blood lust. The newborn Christian Church, faithful to the One who had given Himself for the life of the world, continued the work of His redemption. According to the Christian tradition, Deacon Lawrence, knowing that the fervor of Valerians' hatred was

extending to all Christians who owned property, began to give it all away.

Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!

The liturgy invites us to consider ambivalence between vanity and value. The first words of Cohelet’s book, speaks of vanity of all things: our efforts, jobs, goals, feelings and relationships in what our hearts desire.

The Bible teaches us how to live and gives us practical practices to do it. We shouldn’t rely on an appointment with Dr. Oz, Oprah or Judge Judy to know what to do and how to be better. The program of our lives is to accumulate and

use, and to this, happiness should be limited. To a man like this, Christ would answer: “Foolish, tonight your soul will be required”. More than what we could have or be proud of, is the account of our salvation, the value of the infinite and the permanent of virtue.

Let us ask ourselves, where is our hierarchy of values. What is my priority, essential and durable? I cannot be playing yes or no with God, with others or with myself. Let us look forward from what our eyes could see, so we may realize that as images of God, we are called to be higher, holy, good and perfect, the rest is vanity. What is a fashion dress for, if the heart is corrupted? God is over all of everything. He is the way to wisdom. If we seek Him with all of our strength and our hearts, we could find the solid rock of truth.

May God continue blessing our community! Fr. Cesar Rubiano

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Thursday, August 15, 2019 Bilingual Masses at 12:15PM & 7:00PM at SJC

Rosary at 11:45AM & 6:30PM

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION (PRECEPT)

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a very old feast of the Church, It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven before her body could begin to decay. That is why the Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the obligations listed in the Precepts of the Church as "the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor." the Church uses the Precepts of the Church simply as a reminder to us of our need to grow in holiness.

ST. LOUIS, KING OF FRANCE

Thursday, August 22, 2018 Bilingual Mass at 7:00PM at SJC

At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Louis was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visiting the sick, and like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order. By the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. He kept lists of needy people, whom he regularly released, in every province of his dominion. Disturbed by new Muslim advances in Syria, he led a crusade in 1267, his crusade was diverted to Tunis for his brother’s sake. The army was decimated by disease within a month, and Louis himself died on foreign soil at the age of 56. He was canonized 27 years later.
