NEW YEAR’S DAY HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God — Tuesday, January
1st is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Masses for the holy day will be: New Year’s Eve—Monday, Dec. 31st at 5:00PM. New Year’s Day—Tuesday, Jan. 1st at 8:00AM, 9:30AM & 11:00AM.
THERE IS NO 12:30PM MASS ON NEW YEAR’S DAY.
THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD
A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION JANUARY 1ST
The feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer.” On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His spirit could dwell among men. Christ’s birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat, or sanctioning of God’s plan with her words, “Be it done to me according to thy word.” Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace.” New Year’s Day is also designated as the “World Day of Peace,” further acknowl-edging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world. —holyfamily.org

RESPECT LIFE THERE’S HEALING... PROJECT RACHEL— is a confidential healing ministry for the many people, both men and women, who have been touched by an abortion experience. The purpose of Project Rachel is post-abortion reconciliation and healing for the “other victims” of abortion. The woman who has had an abortion, the person who at one time or another provided an abortion, the man who has forced a daughter or spouse to have an abortion, the potential grandparents, siblings and all who have been denied. All of these people need the help of the Church to deal with the grief, anger and sense of responsibil-ity for a great loss. Call the RVC Diocesan Offices at 678-5800 and ask to speak to someone involved in Project Rachel. THERE’S A SAFE PLACE... BABY SAFE HAVEN — A Secret Safe Place For Newborns Don’t abandon your newborn baby. You can protect your secret and get help. It is legal to give your un-harmed baby to a responsible person at a Safe Haven (for ex-ample, a hospital emergency room) within the first 5 days after birth. Our mission is to rescue newborn babies from injury or death by providing CONFIDENTIAL emergency care and shelter. Total secrecy is guaranteed. Just call: 1-877-796-4673 (877-796-HOPE).
THE HOLY FAMILY Lk 2:41-52 The Holy Family experienced many of the same joys and trials that all parents and children experience today. And so, we can look to this family for help in our own family lives and see in them a model of stewardship in family life. The Gospel passage from Luke starts by telling us something about Jesus’ parents: “Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival cus-tom.” This Family took seriously the stewardship of their time. The “Holy Couple” carefully observed the traditions and practice of their Jewish faith and brought up their Son to do the same. They worshiped as a family, and with their faith com-munity. And they did so faithfully. We can take their example to heart by making Sunday Mass attendance a priority for our families, by making prayer with our family a priority every day, by making sure that we regularly celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and by observing in our family life the feasts and fasts appropriate to the liturgical calendar. When we, as families, prioritize our time with God and worship of Him we will be imitating the Holy Family. On this Feast of the Holy Family, let us reclaim the beauty and importance of family life. Let’s commit to steward our families well in 2019, making time spent with God and practicing our faith the most important appointments on our family calendars. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, 2019
