Bullying Prevention Month: Relational bullying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behavior in the form of criticism, isolation, or fabricated allegations that can damage relationships. Examples include social exclusion (“You can’t be with us”), spreading rumors (“Did you hear…?”), and withholding friendship (“I won’t be your friend if you…”). Though relational bullying can often seem ambiguous to outside observers and often garners less attention than physical bullying or verbal bullying, it should not be discounted simply as normal, adolescent behavior. In fact, several recent studies suggest relational bullying is more strongly related to emotional distress and teen depression than any other form of bullying. Child Protection & Creating Safe Environments Book of Remembrance Our parish Book of Remembrance is available in the vestibule throughout October. You may write the names of beloved family and friends who have gone home to be with our Lord, especially those who have died since last November 1st. The Book of Remembrance will be placed near the altar on the Feast of All Souls, November 2, and we will continue to pray for these loved ones throughout November.

Sunday’s Readings: First Reading ‐ Naaman, cleansed from his leprosy, returns gratefully to Elisha (2 Kings 5:14-17). Psalm ‐ The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power (Psalm 298). Second Reading ‐ If we have died with Christ we shall also live with Christ (2 Timothy 2:8-13). Gospel ‐ Ten lepers are healed by Jesus, but only one, a Samaritan, returns to give him thanks (Luke 17:11-19). HEALING AND SALVATION The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. From the Pastor’s Desk… To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace-

Last weekend I shared in my homilies some tips for the New Evangelization from Bishop Robert Barron as we kicked off the Extraordinary Missionary Month of October. I wanted to share those tips in writing to reinforce them for those who were there or those who were not at my Masses. Bishop Barron is an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the founder of “Word on Fire Catholic Ministries” in 2000 who produced among many other things the “Catholicism” Series seen on EWTN and PBS. Here are the Seven Tips: 1. First and foremost, strengthen your relationship with Jesus

Christ. You cannot share what you yourself do not have. 2. Be a person of ardor. As Aristotle said, “People only really

listen to an excited speaker.” Be an excited speaker about your faith in Jesus Christ.

3. Know the story of Israel. Know your spiritual heritage; you cannot dismiss the Old Testament. See the entire Bible as “your story.”

4. Know the culture. Theologian Karl Barth said “preach with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.” St. John Paul II spoke often of inculturation as exemplified by St. Paul in Athens in Acts of the Apostles who saw the temple to the Unknown God and claimed that was the one and only God of Israel. We must find how the culture is already scratching the surface of truth and connect it to Jesus Christ.

5. Love the Great Tradition of our Catholic faith. We as Catholics do not subscribe to “sola Scriptura” or “Scripture Alone” as most protestant denominations claim. Know our history, art, theology, spiritual writings, music, architecture, saints and more. We know Christ better because we know him through Augustine, Aquinas, Newman, Chesterton, Michalangelo and Dante.

6. Have a Missionary heart and be passionate for souls. 7. Know and use the media. Take advantage of the internet,

YouTube, blogs and mobile apps and utilize our parish subscription to FORMED (Catholic ON DEMAND). I ask all our parishioners to download our Parish App and to sign up for FORMED. There is information elsewhere in the bulletin on both of them.

Let’s renew our commitment to be a missionary people and help our families, our culture, our nation and our world to reclaim the centrality of faith in all we do. May God bless our Extraordinary Missionary Month of October and our week ahead!  Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich

October 13th at the 9AM Mass. After a conversation with a priest, or RCIA director, the person, known as an "inquirer," may seek acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, through the Rite of Acceptance. During this Rite, the inquirer stands amidst the parish community and states that he or she wants to become a baptized member of the Catholic Church. The parish assembly affirms this desire and the inquirer becomes a Catechumen. **Faithful to the Finish 5K Thank you to everyone who supported our 5th Annual OLP 5K in support of our parish needy and school scholarship funds. I appreciate all those who braved the colder weather this year and participated in the run/walk as well as all of our volunteers. A big and special thank you to Cynthia Berarducci who does ALL the organizational work and with whom we could never do this. Please see elsewhere for more recognition of our sponsors. **Anointing of the Sick Mass This Sunday, October 13th at 11AM Mass we will administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This is a unique Mass because it involves the SACRAMENT of Anointing of the Sick. In this sacrament we pray for healing for our recipients as well as the grace to “suffer well.” We pray to be strengthened in the virtue of hope so that the cross of our sickness does not tempt us to despair. **The Church in Dialogue on Bishop Barron’s Book, “Letter to a Suffering Church: A Bishop Speaks on the Sexual Abuse Crisis There will be a group discussion on this book and on this issue in general on Monday, October 14th at 6:30PM in the School Cafeteria. You do not have to read the book to attend. **Erie Rosary March/ Coast to Coast Rosary THIS Sunday, October 13th there will be 2 significant opportunities to pray the Rosary in Erie. First, the Diocesan Rosary March led by Bishop Persico is at 2PM at St. Peter Cathedral. The March will be led around downtown and return to the Cathedral for a prayer service, homily and Benediction. Those who cannot join the march are encouraged to stay in the Cathedral where prayers are also led. Secondly, the Rosary Coast to Coast will be held at Presque Isle Park Beach One at 4PM in conjunction with over 1,200 rallies across the country. You are encouraged to join in either or both of these special opportunities to pray for our church and nation. **Month of the Rosary/Daily Rosary Among other things, October is traditionally designated as the month of the rosary since the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is on October 7th. I remind you that the Rosary is prayed communally at Our Lady of Peace Monday through Friday at 11:40AM in the main church (before the 12:10PM Mass). Also, we will pray the rosary after the 8AM Mass on Saturdays throughout October as well. **Extraordinary Mission Month- A 100th Anniversary Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922), the “missionary pope,” wrote the Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud, in 1919. Pope Francis wants the Church to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this foundational mission document. In 1919, in the wake of a tragic global conflict that he himself called a “useless slaughter,” the Pope recognized the need for a more evangelical approach to missionary work in the world, so that it would be purified of any colonial overtones and kept far away from the nationalistic and expansionistic aims that had proved

Pope Francis goes on to quote and comment on Pope Benedict’s prophetic insight into the centrality of mission for the Church; a Church that just survived the rigors of World War I and was forty years away from Vatican II. “The Church of God is universal; she is not alien to any people,” he wrote, firmly calling for the rejection of any form of particular interest, inasmuch as the proclamation and the love of the Lord Jesus, spread by holiness of one’s life and good works, are the sole purpose of missionary activity. Benedict XV thus laid special emphasis on the missio ad agentes, employing the concepts and language of the time, in an effort to revive, particularly among the clergy, a sense of duty towards the missions. The Holy Father outlined the rational for this celebration of the 100th anniversary to Cardinal Fernando Filoni, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, in a letter dated October 22, 2017, the Memorial of St. John Paul II and World Mission Sunday. This year, the Extraordinary Mission Month will be an opportunity to "renew the missionary zeal," and "introduce the missionary dimension in ordinary pastoral care," according to the President of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). Vatican Council II - and Ad Gentes - established the call of mission as the call to all who are baptized. The theme is "Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on a mission in the world." This worldwide effort is designed to draw attention to the work of missionaries and to the importance of spreading the Gospel. The Diocese of Erie’s Mission Office is coordinating special events throughout October. Naumann, of Kansas City in Kansas and Chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, celebrated the launch of Respect Life Month with a statement that I would like to share with you here: “Although we must cherish, protect, and defend human life year-round, the Catholic Church in the United States sets aside each October as Respect Life Month. This year’s theme, “Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life,” is particularly suited for our times. While attacks against human life seem to grow ever more numerous and callous, we know that Christ has conquered sin and death. Through our Christian hope in the Resurrection, we are given the grace to persevere in faith. Jesus asks us to be as leaven in the world, to bring His light to the darkness. Our daily activities take each of us to places only we can go, to people only we will meet. May we allow Christ to renew and strengthen us that He may work through us in each moment of every day.Be assured of my prayers for you and for our common efforts to bring about a world in which every life is cherished. The OLP Prayer Ministry

This is a ministry for those individuals who are unable to attend usual parish functions perhaps due to an impairment, lack of transportation or illness. This active ministry can be done from home, a nursing home, the hospital, etc. Those who participate will be asked to voluntarily pray for a specific group, ministry or function as the meeting, ministry or function is occurring. Prayer is vital to our lives and keeps us connected as members of the Body of Christ.
