Christian anthropology is that branch of theology that deals with the human person as it relates to God. The quintessential statement of Christian anthropology, which is the same for Jewish anthropology, is set forth in the Book of Genesis. There, in a sin-gle verse in the very first chapter of the first book of Scripture, we find clearly and succinctly set forth a statement of the fundamen-tal principle of Judeo-Christian anthropology: God created man in the image of Himself, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. In this single verse (Gen. 1:27) we learn three fundamental points of Christian anthropology: first, that mankind was creat-ed, and created by God; second, that mankind was created by God in the image of God Himself; and, third, that God intentionally created both male and female, with no other fundamentally defining distinctions (all other distinctions, such as skin color, intelli-gence, etc., being mere “accidentals.”). Permit me to focus on the first two of these elements, leaving the third for another day. Mankind was created by God in a shear act of unmerited love. Life is a gift. A gift, which, once bestowed at our concep-tion, is not revocable. Accordingly, we are totally beholden to God. It in no way compromises our freedom that we were created by God with a purpose; that purpose being to know, love, and serve Him on earth so that we might be happy with Him for eternity in heaven (thank you, Baltimore Catechism for that very clear statement of anthropological Truth). Jesus repeatedly tells us that in His humanity He consistently and constantly seeks to do the will of the Father, and that we are called to do likewise. Jesus freely sub-jects Himself to the will of the Father, that we might do likewise. And His Mother, Mary, both echoes and perfectly exemplifies the same theme. “May it be done unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38) “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) Certainly, we have the choice whether or not to do the will of the Father. Had we no choice in the matter of seeking out and choosing to do the will of God, we could not be said to have been created in the image of God. For that ability, the ability to choose, is the very essence of our human dignity. Without it, we would be only puppets – mere marionettes on the stage of time and space. At the same time, true liberty is not the freedom to “do it my way” (with apologies to Frank Sinatra), but rather the freedom to discover the will of God from His revelation and using the gift of our innate intelligence, and, having discovered it, then seeking to do His will. True free-dom does not lie in our capacity to sin, but in our capacity not to sin; in our capacity to cooperate with God. As we approach true holiness, sin does not become something that is not doable, but rather something that becomes unthinkable to do. This is a far cry from what the modernists would have us believe. For the modernist, our human dignity is based on our autonomy. In their view, we create ourselves, as it were, and we define for ourselves the purpose of our lives. And when the mod-ernist discovers, much to his dismay and chagrin, that all the pleasure, money, and fame in the world doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, he self-medicates with promiscuity, greed, addiction, and transgenderism. An unremitting urge to find and reinvent one-self. To re-create what God created, because we know better – the transhumanist belief that the human race can evolve beyond its current limitations, given enough science and technology . . . and money. But never mind the element of wisdom that teaches us that sometimes just because we can do something does not necessarily mean we should do it. “Better living, through chemistry,” where the miracles of science replace, rather than cooperate with, the miracles of God. The modernist would be perfectly comfortable with New York Governor Cuomo’s now infamous assertion that any pro-gress that we’ve made against the COVID-19 virus was the result of science and medicine and had nothing to do with God or pray-er. So, is that why New York State has the worst death rate from COVID-19 in the nation? Radical autonomists reject any restrictions on their own autonomy coming from any source outside of themselves, except for those mandated by the community (that is, by law) and to which they have agreed. Once embraced by the courts, often without the mandate of the community (“judicial legislation”), such a version of autonomy leads to a society in which physician assisted sui-cide, contraception, abortion, and same sex marriage are not only permitted, but actively promoted, and any disagreement or re-striction is ridiculed, if not prohibited. So much for the open marketplace of ideas. Our human dignity rests not with our autonomy, but with our freedom to cooperate with God. Autonomous willing that pits our wills against God’s is what doomed the devil, and then doomed Adam and Eve, and now threatens to doom us, because it inevi-tably leads to self-destruction. As Christians, we believe that our true autonomy lies in the same autonomy by which Jesus said to His Father in the Garden of Gethsemane, “Not my will, but thine, be done.” This autonomy is the autonomy of love by which we come to share in the divinity of Christ. God invites us to be like Him, and to share with Him freedom that has a divine, not a human, origin. And we accept this invitation, not by opposing ourselves to God, but by freely choosing to align ourselves with Him. “For it is written, ‘Be holy, as I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:16)
