November 26, 2017 - Christ the King

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today, as a parish and as a Church, we celebrate this great Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. Some years ago, I met with a group of people in another parish in order to resolve some problems that had arisen over various ministries and personalities. As I began, and perhaps it was partly do to my own personality and the way people perceive me, maybe it was due to rumors and speculation that gave rise to preconceived notions, or because of the very thing that had brought us together, there was immediate hostility towards what I said. One of the first things I said is that there can be no individual kingdoms within the parish, because “there is only on Kingdom”, it was interrupted by someone shouting at me “And you’re the King.” My response was immediate “No, Christ is the King.” All too often we forget that there is someone above us, someone who called us into being out of love, and continues to call us to Himself. Part of this has to do with ideology, and what we are bringing from the outside, into our lives as Christians, rather than bringing our life as disciples of Christ into the world we live in. Even the celebration of this Solemnity was introduced by the Church, because so many people were turning away from focusing on Jesus Christ, and were taking their cue from the secular world, both on the left and the right. With that being said, I have to admit that sometimes over the past few months my focus has drifted from where it needed to be; what was immediately required to be taken care of took precedence, which is understandable, but that is not the way to continue. Now that things are in place, at least those things needed to address the critical needs of the parish, I want to turn to long reaching needs, dreams and desires. We will soon be distributing surveys in the church after Masses, which will also be available in the parish center, in order to best discern the future of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, and the way we should move forward. In addition to these forms, which I want as many parishioners to fill out as possible, I will be contacting members of the parish community to form a Parish Planning Committee, to map out over the next six months to a year, a Pastoral Plan for our parish. This will take into account the results of the survey, as well as meetings with groups within the community, to define what our Parish Mission, Values, Vision and Goals will be over the next five years, and possibly beyond. It is my hope that by distributing these surveys During Advent, we will reach the most amount of parishioners possible, before all the snowbirds fly south, and when many people who have drifted away over time, for one reason or another, possibly return to celebrate the Season with us. Please take a copy home and fill it out, and return it, because I want to hear from all of you, young and old, daily communicants and Sunday Mass goers, regular attendees and those who may not be here all the time, what your vision is for the parish. Back to the comment that was thrown in my direction in the past, that I thought I was king; the fact is that I have never felt like the king in my position as priest. Sometimes I have felt like a member of the court at best, maybe even someone serving at the king’s feast, and more often than not, I have felt like a court jester. But the saving grace I have, that brings me back to where I need to be, is when I remember that, while I am not the King, I have been adopted by Him, and have become through that Grace a beloved child of God. Pax,

Henry

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Alt-hough the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idola-try of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the mod-ern world, things that are not hard to detect in today’s world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of sum-ming up the whole movement of the liturgical year to-ward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

This is the last week of the Church Liturgical Year. Our new Year begins next week with the Fist Sunday of Advent. Note the change in color next week.

CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ’s work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Crea-tor God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ’s saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls “the least ones” (Matthew 25:45).
