Bulletin access Sign up to receive the bulletin by email at parishesonline.com. Read the bulletin online on Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s website, www.olmcseekonk.org. Email notices to [email protected].

Try our online giving systemOur online donation and payment system works directly through our eCatholic website and provides a safe, simple, and convenient way for parishioners to tithe or contribute gifts for a specific need. This helps eliminate the need to locate check-books, remember weekly envelopes, or mail in funds. Espe-cially during this difficult time when many are not in church weekly, parishioners can give directly on the parish website or set up a recurring account to give automatically. As you know, everything we do as a parish, from the upkeep of the church and Parish Center to the ministries we offer, comes from the generosity of parishioners. So, thank you! To use the system, visit www.olmcseekonk.org and select “Online Giving.”

Information for those who donate by checkThank you so much to all of you who have been supporting the parish with your donations throughout this very difficult time. We have had some inquiries regarding checks which were dropped off and not deposited as quickly as assumed. As has been the past practice, the weekly budgets are counted on a weekly basis, but the monthly collections such as Assess-ment, Building Fund, St. Vincent DePaul, and any Diocesan second collections are counted once per month. Therefore, you will notice that checks used for these specific collections will not be deposited as promptly as those given to the weekly collection. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your continued support and patience during these unprecedented times. Stay safe, stay healthy and God bless you and your families.

If you can help financially but do not wish to give online, you may drop your donation in the black mailbox outside the parish office, or mail it to: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 984 Taunton Ave., PO Box 519, Seekonk, MA 02771. Dona-tions also are collected during Masses on Saturday and Sun-day. Every little bit helps, so thank you.

15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEPastor’s PageHistory of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

(Most of this was taken from ourladyofmountcarmel.com)

Before Christ: Mount Carmel is a biblical place where the prophet Elijah dwelt. It rises 1,742 feet above sea level and towers above Israel’s Mediterra-nean coastline. It was here where Elijah prayed to God for the salvation of Israel, which was suffering a terrible drought at the time. He continued to pray and sent his servant up the mountain several times to look for rain. On the seventh try, Elijah’s servant returned with good news. “Behold a little cloud arose out of the sea like a man’s foot” (1 Kings 1:44). Soon thereafter, torrential rains fell upon the parched land and the people of Israel were saved.

St. Simon Stock: In the 13th century, during the Crusades, St. Simon Stock joined a group of hermits on Mount Carmel during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1247, he was elected the sixth superior-general of the Carmelites at the first chapter held in Aylesford, En-gland. However, the order had difficulty gaining general acceptance and suffered much persecution and oppression from secular clergy and other orders which prompted the monks to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin in the year 1251. On Sunday July 16, 1251, as Simon Stock knelt in prayer, Our Lady appeared to him, holding the Child Jesus in one arm and the Brown Scapular in the other. She uttered the following words: “Hoc erit tibi et cunctis Carmelitis privilegium, in hoc habitu moriens salvabitur” (“This shall be the privilege for you and for all the Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall be saved.”)

The Brown Scapular: The scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular, is one of the most popular and celebrated of Roman Catholic devotions. The sacramental (as the lay faithful commonly use it) is a miniature derivative of the actual brown scapular used by the Carmelites – the

sleeveless outer garment falling from the shoulders which is worn as a sign of their vocation and devotion. Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying, “Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire … It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.”

Attached to the wearing of the Brown Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege. The name, Sabbatine Privilege, originates from the apocryphal Bull “Sacratissimo uti culmine” of John XXII, March 3, 1322. According to Pope John XXII, the Blessed Virgin gave him the following message in a vision related to those who wear the Brown Scapular: “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday (Sabbath) after their death and whom-soever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”

Based on Church tradition, three con-ditions need to be fulfilled to obtain the benefits of this Privilege and the Scap-ular: 1) Wear the Brown Scapular; 2) Observe chastity according to one’s state in life; 3) Pray the Rosary. In order to receive the spiritual blessings associated with the Scapular, it is necessary to be formally enrolled in the Brown Scapular by either a priest or a lay person who has been given this faculty. Once en-rolled, one does not need to be enrolled again. The blessing and imposition are attached to the wearer for life. Feast Day: Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Feast Day is July 16, the same day she appeared to St. Simon Stock.

Perpetual Adoration Begins Again This Week: After over three months of our adoration schedule being limited to only 12 hours a day, we return this week to Perpetual Adoration. This Thursday, July 16, is our parish patroness’ feast,

Father Kevin CookOur Lady of Mount Carmel, and it will be on this great celebration that we will begin perpetual adoration. That morning we will expose the Blessed Sacrament at 8 a.m. We are so grateful to everyone who is committed to spend time in adoration to the Lord, allowing this great gift to be available to countless people. I encourage everyone to seize some time each week before Our Lord in prayer in adoration. Though we have adorers to cover every hour, we can always have more committed adorers, so if you are willing to commit to be a reg-ular adorer, please contact Linda Nason, 508-463-6723, to inquire about possible times an adorer is needed. What a won-derful week for us!

Please Keep in Your Prayers: This Saturday our fifth group of first com-munions occurred. It has been a great blessing to give so many children their first communion. There are still some who will wait until this fall for their child’s first communion. Please keep all of them in your prayers, as well as their families, that these experiences will be beautiful encounters with Jesus Christ and the sacraments.

T.n.T. (Tea and Theology): I am trying another daily experience to help peo-ple grow in understanding and living the spiritual and moral life. Mondays through Saturdays at 10 a.m. I am hold-ing brief 15-minute livestream sessions on the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Par-ish Facebook site. Each day I will touch on different aspects of faith that can help you grow in your understanding and living the faith, as well as answer questions people may have. Come join us on T.n.T … it’s dynamite!

— Fr. Kevin

If you are sick and in the hospital If you are facing grave illness or going in for surgery at which they will be giving you anesthesia, please let Fr. Kevin know so he can come give you Confession, the Anointing of the Sick, and Communion (but only for a person who is dying, called Viaticum). Please know if you are admitted to the hospital for grave health, you should let them know that you are Catholic and would like the Anointing of the Sick or Confession (and please let your family know, if for some reason you are admit-ted to the hospital and unable to communicate, so your family can convey your wishes to the hospital). Currently at Rhode Island Hospital there is a priest chaplain, but some hospitals such as Sturdy do not have priest chaplains anymore, so ask them to contact Fr. Kevin, since you are a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Barn sale in East Freetown on July 25St. John Neumann Parish will sponsor a “One Day Only Barn Sale,” to be held rain or shine on Saturday, July 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John Neumann Parish barn, located next to Ca-thedral Camp on Route 18, 157 Middleboro Road, East Free-town. Take the Chace Road exit off Route 140.

Returning to Mass inside the churchStarting this weekend, July 11-12, we will celebrate all Masses inside the church. Masses will be at their regular times (Sat-urday at 4:30 and Sundays at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 10:45 a.m.). We will continue to livestream the Mass. There are still COVID regulations in place. When coming to Mass in the church, one must wear a mask (unless one has a medical condition). Music will be limited and all missalettes and prayer cards have been removed. Unlike many churches, I am not going to require people to sign up to go to Mass. Pews are roped off and you may only sit in the ones that are available. Please do not remove any ropes and sit in pews that are supposed to remain empty. If you are sitting with someone you live with, you can sit together. But if you are sitting in a row with someone you do not live with, then you must space out at least six feet. Because the space is limited, if you arrive and there is no more seating, you can go downstairs where the livestream is being projected (there are 30 seats available) and we will bring communion down to you. Those receiving communion in the main church will come up single file, spaced out six feet with the person in front and behind. After Mass, please do not congregate but head out to your car. (Many churches are doing communion after Mass so that people will receive and head out to their cars, but I think people can be disciplined enough to safely leave after Mass and be mindful not to gather with others afterward, so commu-nion will take place at the regular time.) Lastly, we have dis-infectant wipes, so after Mass please arrange with someone in your pew to wipe down your pew after everyone has left. This way we all do our part and do not require a group of people to wipe down the pews after us.For those who would like to come to Mass but are nervous about coming into the church, please let me know and we can arrange for you to hear the Mass over the phone in your car. We will come outside to bring you communion. (Please let me know beforehand if this is needed. We will not walk outside every Mass at communion to look around at all the cars to see if people are waiting for communion). I chose to have Mass outdoors last month because of the many regulations for Masses inside, but as it gets hotter, it is getting to be a challenge sitting in the car (and on Sundays having to look in the direction of the sun to see the Mass). Because the pandemic continues, and knowing there are many who are elderly, frail, or have compromised health issues, the bishop is still granting the dispensation of attending Sunday Mass. You are encouraged to join us at home via livestream.
