Dear sisters and brothers, Traditionally, Lent has been a time of concentrating on the Sacrament of Baptism. Today’s scripture readings are filled with allusions to this sacrament, because the Church wants us to give close attention to the meaning of our Baptism. The symbols of our Baptism (Water, Anointing, and Light). In the Gospel, we have seen the story of the man born blind. Jesus sent him to wash his eyes in the pool of Siloan and he came back with his sight restored. (He was baptised with clean Water). In our own sacrament of Baptism, Jesus took the initiative by giving us the call to become Catholics. For most, this call came as infants, for others as adults. In either case, it was as Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. He knew that he had been born blind spiritually, and he broke into our lives with the Sacrament of Baptism. In the first reading, as soon as Samuel saw this young man, whose name was David, he knew who he was. He anointed David as King of Israel. (After the Baptism, the Priest will anoint the person with Chrism Oil). In the second reading, St Paul spoke of the Christians as one coming out of darkness into light, as one born blind gained the power to see. His words should make us think of the candle we, or our parents or godparents hold in the ceremony of Baptism, as the Priest says (receive the Light of Christ). Faith was God’s gift to us in Baptism. We were led from darkness into spiritual light. Fourth Sunday of Lent: Year A

Introduction: Catechumens are in the final stages of their preparation for baptism, for having their faith in Jesus as Risen Lord and Saviour ratified by full membership in the believing community. The already baptised are being urged to renew their faith in the same Jesus as they listen today to the story of the man born blind.

First Reading: 1 Samuel 16: 1b, 6-7, 10-13 The fourth significant stage of the journey of the people of Israel towards the fulfilment of God’s plan for human salvation was the election of David as king. Jesus is called Son of David in the gospels.

Second Reading: Ephesians 5: 8-14 Paul reminds the Ephesians that they are now children of the light through their faith in Jesus. They must have nothing more to do with the works of darkness, things thought in secret and done in secret of which people are now ashamed.

Gospel: John 9: 1-41 The man born blind receives his sight from Jesus and with it the gift of spiritual sight that is faith in Jesus as Son of Man, whom he acknowledges as Lord.

St Stephen’s Primary School at Algester

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS

The Experiences and Challenges of Families

31. The welfare of the family is decisive for the future of the world and that of the Church. Countless studies have been made of marriage and the family, their current problems and challenges. We do well to focus on concrete realities, since “the call and the demands of the Spirit resound in the events of history”, and through these “the Church can also be guided to a more profound understanding of the inexhaustible mystery of marriage and the family.” I will not attempt here to present all that might be said about the family today. Nonetheless, because the Synod Fathers examined the situation of families worldwide, I consider it fitting to take up some of their pastoral insights, along with concerns derived from my own experience.
