We are now into the month of May. Throughout most of the northern hemisphere of the world, May is considered one of the most beautiful months of the year as it signals the blooming of spring and the bursting forth of life. It is in this lovely setting of warmth and flowers of the month of May that the Church honors the Blessed Mother. Through the centuries, the Popes have recommended honoring Mary during the month of May. Pope Pius XII was very dedicated to the honor of Mary. In his great Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy, Mediator Dei, he characterized devotion to Mary as being of great piety and dignity. Pope Paul VI wrote a short encyclical in 1965 citing May devotions as a means of offering prayers for peace. He urged the faithful to make use of this practice by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is honored and the Christian people are enriched with spiritual gifts. In May of 2002, Pope John Paul II, who dedicated his papacy to the Mother of God, said, "Today we begin the month dedicated to Our Lady, a favorite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a Marian month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!" The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church. She is the example, the guide and the inspiration of everyone who

seeks to be the servant of God and mankind, and, as Mary herself was, the obedient agent of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. In our observance of the month of May, we must also take into account that the observance of the fifty days of the Easter season. Our prayers in honor of Mary should emphasize her participation in the Paschal Mystery of her Son, and in Pentecost, which marks the beginning of the apostolic mission of the Church. Our Marian devotions connected with the month of May readily highlight the role that Mary fulfilled in in the mission of her Divine and Risen Son. In May, Mary is honored with various special devotions and prayers. Processions and May crownings are some of the most popular and traditional May devotions. Each year the children of Our Lady of Las Vegas School participate in the May crowing of the image of our Blessed Mother at the school mass on the first Wednesday of May. One of the foremost devotions to Mary in May is the praying of the Litany of Loreto. The Litany of Loreto, one of many Marian litanies, was composed during the Middle Ages. The place of honor it now holds in the life of the Church is due to its faithful use at the shrine of the Holy House at Loreto, which, according to tradition, was the small cottage-like home where the Holy Family had lived. The Litany of Loreto was wholeheartedly recommended by Pope Clement VII and approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587, which made it the most widely used prayer in honor of the Blessed Mother throughout the world. During this month of May, let us remember that Jesus gave Mary to us as our heavenly mother. Let us honor her each day, especially in the beautiful prayer of the Litany of Loreto. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God; that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

May is also the month of First Holy Communions. The children of Our Lady of Las Vegas School received First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 5th. The children of the Religious Education program will receive their First Holy Communion next Saturday, May 12. And the children of the Polish Apostolate will receive their First Holy Communion on Sunday, May 13th. Please remember these children in your prayers. Fr. Gerry

PLEASE PRAY for THOSE WHO ARE ILL If you have the sick person’s permission, you may request that their name be printed in the bulletin for prayers. This is strictly for the sick only. Their name will remain for four consecutive Sundays.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the weekend of May 12 and 13, 2018, our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and the Catholic University of America (CUA). Last year, Pope Francis encouraged us, “to engage in constructive forms of communication that reject prejudice towards others and foster a culture of encounter” (World Communications Day Message, 2017). By generously supporting this collection, you are spreading the Gospel and helping others encounter Christ every day. Your gifts will not only support projects on a national and international scale but also here in our own diocese. Of the funds we collect, one half will remain here in the diocese to assist our evangelization efforts though local communications projects. With your support of the CCC, a percentage of your donation sustains our local production of the televised Mass aired at 7:30 a.m. every Sunday. Your support also assists other great projects! A

radio station in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being established to share the Gospel with those living in the North Kivu province, on the far eastern border of the country. This radio station will provide people with quality, faith-filled programming to encourage spiritual growth and evangelization. Programming will include recitation of the Rosary, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, catechetical programs, and Catholic news. Parishes, schools, diocesan offices, universities, and even family homes will be involved in the preparation and broadcasting, making the radio a virtual meeting place where many people will share their faith and life experiences. It is through your generosity that this project, and others like it, can spread the Gospel around the world. For more information about the collection and the projects it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccc. Support the collection and connect with Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D Bishop of Las Vegas

Las Vegas Diocesan Conference September 7 & 8, 2018

South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa

We will gather at The South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa to welcome our new Bishop-Designate George Leo Thomas as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas! Speakers are coming from different parts of our country to share their knowledge and expertise. Our new Bishop will address us on Saturday morning and we’ve added a Young Adult track with some local speakers in the hopes of addressing and identifying a strong city-wide community of Young Adults. The church encourages us to continue learning about our faith and finding ways to live it more effectively in our lives. This Conference is a great opportunity to gather with hundreds of our Catholic brothers and sisters to learn about our faith and be witnesses to each other.

Registration Fees • $45 for Friday night only • EARLY BIRD $65 for Friday and Saturday through June 1 • $75 for Friday and Saturday from May 16 - July 15 • $85 for Friday and Saturday from July 16 to the Conference
