ever set foot in the Baja! Two companies, Azure Minerals LTD, an Australian

company and Loreto Copper, a Canadian company hold mining concessions and land in the Loreto area. It is rumored that their interest is to eventually sell out to Grupo Mexico, a large Mexican mining concern which holds the largest copper reserves in the world.

Two different Ejidos, La Purisma & San Javier, are involved in legal disputes over land targeted to be a part of this new mining operation. A third ejido, Ejido Loreto, is allegedly being approached by Grupo Mexico to purchase some additional land.

So, exactly what is an ejido? It’s basically a col-lective group of Mexican land owners, similar to an Indian Reservation in the United States. After the 14-year Mexican Revolution that ended in 1924, most of the land in Mexico that was owned by the richest Mexican families from Spanish Land Grants, was divided up and Ejidos were created to re-dis-tribute the land to the poorer and agrarian people of Mexico. When you are driving down Highway 1 and you see a sign that says Ent San Javier (for exmaple), this means that you are entering an Ejido. There are many Ejidos in BCS and about five in the Loreto area. The largest Ejido near Loreto is La Purisima and located northwest of town. Others are Ligui, Loreto, San Javier and Santa Domingo. Up until 1992, no one could buy Ejido land, but now the land can be sold because of NAFTA (North

American Free Trade Agreement). A group within the ejido La Purisima from Los Cabos attempted to reassign nearly 18,000 hectares (about 45,000 acres) to themselves in 2012 so that this could be sold to the mining company. Much of the land they claimed from this already had been sold or assigned to others before then, which has resulted in legal fights within the Ejido La Purisima. This Grupo Los Cabos also received services from a Mexican Surveyor, Salvador Sarabia, who they also assigned lands to for supposed payment for his ser-vices for doing the technical map work of this land grab. The San Javier Ejido is also currently trying to claim over 1,000 hectares (about 2,500 acres) of pri-vate land from the Cunningham family, who has held the land since the late 1800’s. The same surveyor, Salvador Sarabia, is also doing the technical work for this ejido as well. In both cases, all of this land is be-ing targeted so that it can be sold to the large mining project. Both attempts have led to numerous legal disputes and challenges. While actual mining operations would not begin for at least several years, it would last for decades and its impact would be permanent. On August 7, 2014, a sulfuric acid spill from the Buenavista Copper Mine in Cananea, Sonora (One of Grupo Mexico’s large copper mines in northern Mexico) sent 10 million gallons (40,000 cubic meters) of toxic wastewater into portions of the Bacanuchi and Sonora Rivers. Mine officials were criticized for not reporting the spill for around 24 hours, while

about 60 workers and is open every day from 8am - 10pm. It is located on Independencia about two blocks north of the Ley Express. This year, there were two Mexican chain stores to open in Loreto, Ley Express and Bodega Aurrera. As a result of their opening, our local supermarket, El Pescador, became much more well-stocked, newer equipment and provided im-proved “English speaking” customer service. They answered the new competition and they are now doing more business, in spite of these new stores. If any retailer wants to attract more English speak-ing customers, they should keep a clean store and plan on having a way to communicate with them while they are shopping. Or perhaps us English speaking people could strive to learn the native language?

residents downstream detected that dozens of miles of the river turned to an orange color. 88 schools were closed due to the uncertainty of the safety of the drinking water and all marine life was killed with-in 50 miles of the spill. Officials distributed over one million gallons of drinking water via tanker trucks to about 3/4 of the contaminated drinking water area. Some of the residents who live in isolated areas were harder to reach. With any large scale mining operation, accidents can happen, even if all precautions are being taken. Much of Loreto’s livelihood comes from seafood and the beauty of the protected National Marine Park. It would be devastating to our current economy if this was ever damaged or compromised. With all this being said, there are advantages that a mine would bring to Loreto. Some business people actually welcome the increased population and com-merce that it would generate. It would also create more jobs for local residents. Although, it will change the face of Loreto from a sleepy little tourist town into a booming mining city. Other areas in Mexico that have developed mining operations have not ex-perienced the jump in economic benefits that were promised by the mining company. You can expect huge and vigorous opposition in the BCS region and it will take many years to sort through the challenges to such a large operation. Whether you are for or against the mining opera-tion coming to Loreto, knowledge and awareness is always a good thing.

Have you ever wondered who does all the planning of the official city events of Loreto? Her name is Lizette Inzunza and she is very busy in her current position as Director of Action - Social, Civic and Cultural.

She is in charge of all cultural activities in town and has been doing this for 15 years, working for four different mayors. She and her staff of 35 make all the decorations for the Plaza events which are numerous and keeps her on the move. However, she still tries to find time for her passion of painting.

As a long time resident of Loreto, she has profoundly influenced the culture of Loreto. Lizette has a heart for developing the talents of the people, especially children, in the world of the arts. She loves all culture (art, books, dance, photography) and wants the people of Mexico to have the opportunity to experience the beauty of knowing about culture.

Lizette Inzunza was born in Sonora, Mexico. She went to the Institute of Art in Guadalajara and studied to be a graphic artist. Since she was a child, she has had a love for drawing and some-times it got her in trouble as a kid in school when they thought she was not paying attention. She was always doodling and sketching on her paper in the classroom. However, now she has turned that talent into her livelihood and has been very successful as an artist here and abroad.

Lizette moved to Loreto 25 years ago when she married her husband, Carlos, and he wanted to live here. When she arrived, she was disap-pointed in the lack of culture in the small town of Loreto and decided to take on the challenge of changing that. To start with, she founded the Culture House 23 years ago. It is located at Aqua Dulce and Pina Juarez. She has also taught

children and adults water painting for the last 17 years. In addition, she also gave Americans painting les-sons at Paulette’s (of Ette’s Pie Shop) home for many years.

Many artists have come to Loreto throughout the years to take classes from Lizette. In return, Lizette says she has honed her artistic ability and learned a great deal from them

as well. For example, last year there was a big art show here called “Art Exchange Paris” where 25 artists from France, six artists from Sonora, and six from the United States came here to share their artwork and learn from each other. Lizette states, “They all loved the peace and tranquil-ity here in Loreto”, enjoyed their stay and it was a very productive trip. In fact, it was so much appreciated that in December 2013, Lizette was flown to Paris where she received a silver metal for her curriculum and the fantastic job she has done with her teaching and her artwork. It was a big ceremony and she is one of two Mexicans to ever receive this metal. This year, in October, she also had the honor to go back to Paris for two weeks. She had three different art exhibits and currently has two paintings in art galleries there for another month. You can also see and purchase Lizette’s artwork at the office of the Notoria 13 in Loreto Bay.

Lizette’s goal is to educate the children and adults in Loreto about art, books, dance, and to make them aware of all the ways learning about these things can be positive and educational. It is obvious that she has accomplished this goal because of the many people she has impacted in the community. In fact, she has passed on her creative talent and love of the arts to her son, Jose Carlos, as well. He is 25, lives in Sonora now and works in the same field of publicity and web design.

The Mexican government is making an investment in the infrastructure of the Loreto area. 2014 was the year of road construction. Let’s revisit some of the improvements to our roads, bridges & high-ways this year. 1. Both sides of Paseo Pedro de Ugarte (The main entrance to Loreto) were re-paved in record time...Only a couple of days! Since they haven’t yet added to the speed bumps (Topes or Reductor de Velocidads), the new layer of pavement has reduced the height and effectiveness of the speed bumps...Shhhh! 2. The main highway bridge over the San Javier Arroyo was rebuilt and wid-ened while the arroyo below was completely cleaned out and fortified with large rocks to prevent any future eroision. It sure would be nice if they built a bridge on Madero over the Arroyo (where the Sunday Farmer’s Market used to be) connecting the Zaragoza area to Loreto. 3. Widening the main highway to four lanes from Loreto to about 2 miles south of the air-port. Let’s call it a “Mexican Freeway,” because that is the closest thing that compares to a

freeway in the USA or Canada. There are plans this year to complete the four lane all

the way to the north main entrance of Nopolo. Since the four lane is

fully paved all the way across, it could actually be used as an

extra runway for the airport...It has enough lights for night landings, too! 4. Many wash outs were caused on the main high-way south of Nopolo and all the way to Villa del Palmar. One small bridge needed to be replaced just north of Mirador. These wash-outs we all replaced in time for Hurricane Odile and all

seemed to fair pretty well from the hurricane.

5. The “King of the Road Proj-ect” had to be the rock demoli-

tion in Mirador. For about a year, traffic was stopped in both directions

for usually about 45 minutes to an hour while rocks were sent crashing to the high-

way and then cleared off by skip loaders. This excavation was done to prevent major land-slides that would close the road for an extended period of time. During most of 2014 up until October, you never knew how long you would be stopped going north & south. One worker at the tented tienda on the construction site was given a hand-held VHF radio so she could announce

SPEED B UMP REDUCTOR TIP

Traveling into the North end of Nopolo and going to Loreto Bay,

make the second right turn and head down towards the Fonatur office. Make a left then you will find one very small

speed bump about 500 yards down. Is it any coincidence that there are no speed bumps

until after the Fonatur office? Continue down and veer right. Take that road about a 1/4 mile, then there is one medium speed bump. About

another 1/4 mile, veer left and you will find one large speed bump as you enter into Agua Viva where the “Race Track” is. You have now gone over three speed bumps...One large, one me-dium and one small. If you go the other way

which takes you down by the Whales Inn and then right, you will go over five large

speed bumps. If you are not familiar with this new way that takes you

past the Fonatur office, try it during the day first.

the opening of the lanes northbound to residents of Juncalito and Puerto Escondido (who normally moni-tor the radio from their boats or casas). The finished project is almost as beautiful as the view out over the Sea of Cortez and Isla Carmen, Isla Danzante and Isla Chuenque (Mestiza), that little island in front of Juncalito. The right side of the highway is lined with those wire boxes filled with rocks to prevent any loose rocks from landing on the road....But they left only one opening about 20 feet wide. You may not want to park there! When I travel the Baja, it’s always a hassle when you come up on road construction. But I just look at it as progress that is necessary to keep our Mexican highways safer by being maintained. It’s a good thing!

LORETO BAY SEWERS

Loreto Bay saw a wave of sea turtles laying eggs on the beach in December. It might be your instinct to try to help these little baby sea turtles get to the sea (before some-thing gets them), although it actually can be harmful for them to be touched by human hands. Some of the bacte-ria on your hands can be lethal to them as they have no immune system built up yet. If you see any turtle eggs in the sand, call the Pargue Nacional Bahia Loreto. Call either Israel (613) 105-6106 or Claudia at (613) 135-0477. They will respond and build a protective fence like you see here. So, now that you have seen the turtle nest on the beach near the Kayak Rentals, when are the little ones going to hatch? As a fun fundraiser for the natural environment, you can try to pick the day on which the eggs will hatch and the turtles will make their journey to the Sea of Cortez. The selection of one day is $50 pesos. The winner will get half of the proceeds and the other half goes to the “natural environment” charity of their choice. To get tickets, see Lorene Archdekin at [email protected]. The winner will be announced in a future issue of Loreto LIFE News.

Most recently, you may have noticed some major digging in three spots in the median of the Paseo Mision de Loreto. This is for the new sewer connections to the Posada Condominiums. Residents are actually starting to move into the north Posada building. About half of the units are com-pleted and sold. A private courtyard will be built in the center of this north Posada building. For more retail stores will be on the outside ground floor. More more infor-mation on sales, contact [email protected] or stop by between 10am - 2pm daily.

It was a little tougher dancing on the stones, but the view more than made up for it! A stage was set up for the Los Beach Dogs. It was great to have lead guitarist Steve Giovenco back to play with Rich Rajacich, George Russell, Chucho Cortes and Tony Perez. Also joining the band were the up and coming young Mexican brothers, Adolfo & Ruben Barenas. A celebration also took place for Gaby, who was also in attendance. With both Steve and Gaby returning to Loreto Bay, it made for a really special Welcome Back night! It was a beautiful evening with no bugs and the great aroma of the delicious seafood prepared by Carmen from La Palapa restaurant filled the air.

The Second Annual Swim-A-Thon was held on Saturday morning, November 15. The race started at 9:30 and the crowds grew as the 2 hour event went on. This Swim-A-Thon was originally designed to showcase the new Lap Pool in the Founder’s neighborhood. Four teams of 8-10

swimmers each partici-pated in a rotating relay race where each swim-mer swam segments of at least 100 meters (2 laps or 4 lengths). Some swimmers, like Robert Ross(AKA The Swim-ming Machine) swam a few more! (This is not the same Robert Ross who owns “The Bad Company” fishing boat and property near Aqua Verde). Swimmers of all ages competed. Team #

1 was the winner by swimming over 6,400

meters in two hours. Some of the members of the winning team included Ann Schaul, Mea-

gan (Claudia & Jeff Gill’s daughter), Fiona (Maria & Rafa’s daughter), Steve, Margaret Beckham and of course, Robert Ross! All of the participants were winners. Mexican burritos and drinks were supplied by Associa for after the event. Silvia did a great job of or-ganizing this year’s Swim-A-Thon and next year we may invite swimmers from other areas to compete. Starting in January, there will be a Swim-A-Thon practice for fun on the first Saturday of the month at 9:30am. Just come by to join in the fun and exercise. All ages and levels of swimming skill welcome. For more

information, please call Bill at (613) 100-9131 or email [email protected].

Workers are franticly painting (If that’s possible here in Ma-nana Mexico) bouy balls until they reach # 117. Fonatur will be replacing all the bouys, chains and anchor blocks in the main harbor at Puerto Escondido. This is a large investment by Fonatur in an attempt to lure sailors and boaters back to the marina. Since Pedro’s Portobello Restaurant and mini market closed down earlier this year, the marina has earned a bad reputation among the Sea of Cortez cruisers and the boating community in general. There have also been many times when diesel and gasoline were not available at the fuel dock. Patty and Rafa (former owner’s of Carole’s Res-taurant) have re-opened the mini market and Alma (owner of Hotel Tripui) will open a new restaurant

PUERTO ESCONDIDO SAILING BACK AFTER ODILEin the former Porto Bello location in early February. Meanwhile, Pedro has opened a new mini market in the Agua Viva area of Loreto Bay and is doing very well. He has also said that he is looking to open another mini market and restaurant on either the

Malecon in Loreto, Juncalito or the Candelaros/Luigi area. Then all of his boater friends who know him from Portobello and the mini market in Puerto Escondido will have a place to anchor out, come in for a meal and provision. Many boats in Puerto Escondido sustained major damage from hurricane Odile. About 15 boats were damaged, 4 boats sank, 11 were driven ashore. Of the 11 boats driven ashore, 3 were total losses and 8 are questionable. There has been a continued ef-fort by many divers, including Carlos, and mechan-ics like Elvin from PEMS (Puerto Escondido Marine Service) to restore the vessels as soon as possible. One of the most heroic stories was that of Rod & Joanne aboard Pacific Puffin. They broke loose from their mooring, started their engine and began to circle in the main harbor during the peak of the hurricane. The husband was thrown overboard and swimming for his life in the storm, while the wife remained aboard and tried to maintain control

of the boat in the driving rain and wind, while searching for her husband in the water. By a miracle, she found him, but he told his wife that he was too weak to climb aboard. She remarked, “You get your ass up here now.” Pacific Puffin was rolling from starboard to port with her mast tipping close to the water. The husband wrapped his leg around one of the stanchions and lifelines when the boat tipped to his side and when the boat righted herself it pulled the husband out of the water and through him on the deck. They made it safely through the hurricane with only a bruise on his leg and a bump on her head. On the north end of the main harbor, several boats ended up in the mangroves including Manta (owned by Terry Kennedy, a large catarmaran named Rock Scallion and Cloud Nine which is now owned by an insurance company). The new owners of Cloud Nine decided to take the insurance check and run! It has been a real mess trying to sort everything out from an insurance and liability standpoint. Most boat owners whose boats caused damage to other boats were very cooperative and respon-sible by providing their insurance information to those boat owners whose boats were damaged. One was not. Several witnesses, including the API and Fonatur Security Guards on duty, stated that a boat named Yankee Dreamer came off her moor-

Sea Toy & Cloud Nine sank and the other three boats sustained seri-ous damage as they were pushed up against the concrete sea wall. The owner of Yankee Dreamer, Gregory Peterson, has failed to provide proof of any liability insurance and has been reported to the Port Captain in Loreto. He was also reported to the US Coast Guard and the National Vessel Documenta-tion Center as Yankee Dreamer is a documented vessel and in violation of the law by not maintaining liability insurance in a foreign port. If anyone has any information about the whereabouts of Gregory Peterson, please contact the Port Captain in Loreto at (613) 135-0465 or the Fonatur Marina Office at (613) 133-0189. MORE THAN JUST SUSHI The only Japanese restaurant in Loreto is not tough to find if you know where it is. Right next to Café Ole (which most people know where that is) is a red staircase that leads up to a restaurant above the ReMexico Real Estate office. Be careful going up the stairs and down (especially after a few Sakis), because it is not very well lit. Once you arrive, you will be surprised by the Japanese atmosphere that awaits you. You will be greeted friendly by the owner,

Oscar, or the sushi chef, Juan. Both were trained by a renowned sushi chef, Edgar, who started the popular Jiro Sushi and Sake Sushi restaurants in La Paz. Edgar spent 3 months here in Loreto working to set up the La Terraza restaurant. Zaid does the hot cooking in the kitchen. All of the fish is fresh including local Yellowtail and Seabass. The Salmon and Tuna come from

La Paz. The presentation of each dish is excep-tional. We started with a spicy Yellowtail Shashimi with fresh jalapeno and scallions. Next was Ann’s favorite, Salmon Rolls

Curricane with avocado, orange sauce & ginger. The soup was Miso Shiru, which is Tofu, Soy paste and scallions. For salad, we were served delicious tempura vegetables (green pepper, tomato, celery, onion & carrots) with lettuce, mashed potatoes, chicken teriyaki and crispy chicken skin topping. This also served with Shrimp or Arrachaca.

Mezzaluna is just a fun place to enjoy delicious Italian food. More than likely, you will greet old friends and perhaps make new ones? We ran into Alexander who was having the Green Salad (a meal in itself), our good friend Fabian and Claudine, Manager of the spa at Villa del Palmar. The spacious new dining room, with solid wood benches and chairs, decorated with red and green checkered table cloths, creates a quaint and contemporary Italian atmosphere. Our friendly waitress, Joanna, greeted us promptly with some scones to dip in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. She explained the nightly specials of three Empanadas with a salad for $80 pesos or the Chicken Lasagna including a glass of wine for $150 pesos. The menu is in both English and Spanish. A popular selection is your choice of 16 homemade pastas (Spinach is tasty) and your choice of 12 sauces. We decided to just leave it up to Chef Mariela. We started with four flavors of empanadas… Capresse, Tuna, Pepperoni and Chicken & Mushroom. Ann’s favorite was the Chicken & Mushroom while I enjoyed the Pepperoni the best. We both did not care for the Tuna. We thought that the breading on the empanadas was a little too thick. The wood fired pizza is probably the best in Loreto. We had the Muza (mozzarella & house pesto) and it was fabulous! Careful…the crushed red pepper is some of the hottest I’ve ever had! The chicken lasagna was the way to go! Plenty of cheese, mushrooms and spinach. Very filling! It was served with some Italian bread with a hint of sugar (but hard to taste any sweet) and special Chimchuii sauce (Mariela’s secret recipe) to dip in. For dessert (If we needed it) the Crepes are fantastic. We had the Nutella (a rich dark chocolate) with blackberries, cranberries and strawberries. It was nice to order water and they bring you a glass of purified water, not try to sell you a plastic water bottle. The bath rooms were clean and well-stocked, but there was this weird string thing to pull to flush the toilet. It worked fine. You can’t go wrong with lunch or dinner at Mezzaluna.

The main course was a Rainbow Roll which in-cluded Salmon, Yellowtail, Tuna and Avocado. The wasabi is freshly made and very tasty (not too hot). They have many sushi rolls to choose from. For dessert, as if we needed it, was a frozen banana tempura fried and served with vanilla ice cream. WOW! The meal was outstanding.

It looks like Marta has finally decided on the nick-mane “Clam Shack,” since that’s what most people think the name is anyway. The name Clam Shack is very catchy because of the successful chain of Joe’s Crab Shacks all over the USA. Whatever name you call it, Vista Al Mar is the best place in Loreto, if not all of the Baja, for clams.

It’s truly a family restaurant. 25 years ago, Miguel Jimenez opened up on the beach be-tween Loreto Bay and Mirador. His family dove for clams right out in front of the restaurant. With 13 kids (4 girls and 9 boys), Miguel was sure to not run short of workers. Nine still work there today and Marta is the manager. They own the Federal Concession

CLAM SHACK OR SHOP?within 25 meters of the sea.Currently, most all of their clams come fresh from Tar-zan, “The Clam Amigo!” He supplies clams to most of the restaurants in Loreto…You may have seen him driving around in his blue SUV with all the stickers! I love to watch the workers at Vista Al Mar cleaning the clams so fast and adeptly. They use a very sharp knife. It always takes me forever to clean them when we have them at home. They seat 50 people out-side and 20 inside. Families are most welcome as they have a play area for the kids. They also have a VIP Palapa for special occa-sions like birthday parties. Mar has a great view of the sea and Isla Carmen! The favorite way they serve clams are Rock Clams…Open & Raw on the shell. Squeeze the lime juice on them and watch them squirm and come to life! We liked the stuffed or cheese clams that are cooked the best. They also have a delicious selection of Seafood Soups & Cocktails. The shrimp and fish tacos are very popular and their specialty is a whole fried fish…I still can’t figure out how they get the bones out before they fry it? The restrooms are sort of primitive because you flush by pouring a bucket of water in the toilet. There is a nice hand washing sink with plenty of soap and paper towels. The restaurant is open Tuesdays – Sundays from 10:30 – 6:00 (Kitchen closes at 5:30). They close every year from the last week in December until the 4th week in January for renovation and a holiday for the family workers. They will re-open on Janu-ary 27, 2015. If you’ve never been to the Clam Shack, then you have to try it. If you’ve been there many times, like myself, then you already know why. It’s a must!

DOYLE Construction

Welcome to a new regular feature for the Loreto LIFE News.

Building (or buying) and owning a home in Mexico presents many challenges… cultural, legal, and more. Those challenges are greatly complicated by the Baja environment and the extremes of the annual weather cycle, and also by the nature of occasional occu-pancy. Homes are machines, and they need to be used regularly to operate correctly. In terms of home construction and maintenance, the annual weather can be viewed as two separate seasons:

THE DRY SEASON: Normally starting in December and running thru April, we have the winter winds driving salty sand and dirt into the air, which finds it’s way inside your home and into every exterior crack and crevice. The salt is corrosive and ubiq-uitous, getting deep into every piece of equipment and appliances. The winter air is cool at night and very dry, which causes all of your home’s finishes to become dry and shrink (paint, plaster, woodwork and fabrics, etc).

THE WET SEASON: Normally May to November, the wet season is especially tough on homes. The air is hot and very humid (75-100%), with combined sensible and latent heat pushing “real feel” tem-peratures as high as 135 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity causes wood to swell and expand, espe-cially after rains… doors and windows swell shut so tightly that sometimes they have to be broken to get into a house. The direct sun is intense, and very destructive of paint, caulking, wood finishes, wood, fabrics, window coverings, exposed roofing and waterproofing, exposed equipment, and plants. This is the season of insects, and far worse, mold and mildew… they both want to eat your house!

It is the swings between these two seasons that are destructive in the long term. Shrinking and swelling… drying and humidifying… 70mph wind driven rain, and wind driven salt in dry air. By anticipating these extremes, you can reduce your long term cost of own-ership… it is less expensive to maintain homes than to repair them (due to lack of maintenance).

The Astute Loreto Homeowner will be an educational series of articles addressing the full spectrum of con-struction and maintenance issues for homeowners. It is hoped that everyone will become better informed, a little smarter… more astute in regard to home ownership in Mexico. We will look at a wide variety of issues, materials, optional solutions, costs, tax and legal issues of hiring workers/contractors, and much more. It is written by Bill Doyle who is the owner of Doyle Design & Construction, S de RL de CV.

Some months, the articles will be more in depth and

The Astute Loreto Homeowner by Bill Doyle

longer… sometimes they will be short “Tips” for more astute home ownership. For our introductory article, here are a couple of short examples:

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR ANNUAL HOME MAINTENANCE, AND WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK AT? Definitely do you annual maintenance in the months of March, April and May. These are the months fol-lowing the end of the dry winter winds, and before the onset of the intense heat and humidity of the wet season. Ideally, all home systems should be inspected annually… Woodwork and caulking, door and window seals, waterproofing, plaster and paint, door hardware, lighting, electrical panel and service, air conditioners, plumbing fixtures, hot water sys-tem, appliances, gas system. The cost of an annual inspection and maintenance are quite low, and annual maintenance really helps to keep long term repairs and costs to a minimum.

DOES IT TAKE TOO LONG FOR HOT WATER TO REACH YOUR FAUCETS? This may seem like common sense, but it’s not: If it takes a long time (more than 60 seconds) for hot water to reach your shower, bath, faucets, etc… there is likely something wrong with your hot water system. If it takes a REALLY long time, more than 2 minutes, there is definitely something fundamentally wrong with your hot water system. The causes of slow hot water, and low hot water temperatures, are many. You don’t have to put up with it!!! You need a really good plumber, or a very smart Property Manager, to figure out the problems, propose solutions, and provide budgets.

One last thing… we hope Loreto Homeowners will write in with questions. Do you have a problem with your home and not sure what to do? Write us, and we will respond… or better yet, we may do a feature on your issue. Please email to [email protected].

We hope you enjoy coming articles. For now, Happy Holidays!

This manageable size develop-ment of only 13 lots is located on one of the nicest pieces of land on the sea in north Loreto. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful homes in town, you will feel very safe in this affluent neighborhood. The owner of Villas Julieta, Agustin Salvat, also lives in a 3,000 sq ft casa on the southeast corner of the property. This land has been privately owned by his family for over 40 years, so you know the property has clear title and ownership. Agustin’s father (with the same name) purchased the land from the three daughters of Admiral Alveraz, who was the Admiral of the Loreto Navel Base at the turn of the century. Agustin’s father was also Mexico’s Minister of Tourism from 1964 - 1970 and Mexico’s Ambas-sador to Czechoslovakia, living in Prague from 1980 - 1983. He authored a book called The War of 30 Years about the view of Russia from a Latin perspective. The Salvat family is very well respected throughout Mexico and you can expect to have no problems with the purchase of real estate in Villas Julieta. There are 13 large size lots for sale, 3 Custom

LORETO CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Authored by Markes E. Johnson (Professor Emeritus, Williams College). List price: $19.95.

This book brings the reader on a scientific pilgrimage to attend a sampling of wild and starkly beautiful landscapes on islands in the western Gulf of California and defining peninsula of Mex-ico’s Baja California. Excursions are spaced over six degrees of latitude between the high desert of Cataviña in the north and Isla Cerralvo near the gulf’s southern entrance. It is a journey both intellectual and unexpectedly spiritual in design, meant to celebrate

Off-Trail Adventures in Baja California: Exploring Landscapes and Geology on Gulf Shores and Islands. 2014

spots where the intersection of geography, geology, and ecology meet to instill in the observer a deep understanding of place and time. The region’s varied rocks and fossils record stories about interlocking ecosystems that evolved during the last six million years while one of the Earth’s youngest and most fertile seas took shape carved out from Mexico’s Pacific edge. Building on his previous book, Discovering the Geology of Baja California (2002), the author casts each chapter in the con-text of original research car-ried out with his students and co-investigators who revel in going “off-grid” to conduct their investigations isolated from the distracting electronic noise of the greater world. At the core of each chapter is a present-tense account of a hike that shows how geologistsread the rocks and puzzle-out their secrets, disproving favorite hypotheses

and occasionally making new discoveries by pure serendipity. Woven into the narrative is a sense of how our comprehen-sion of a place is shaped by those who precede us as think-ers and explorers. Foremost among historical characters populating the stage set by the Gulf of California are marine ecologist Edward Ricketts (1897-1948) and writer John Steinbeck (1902-1968), who joined together to champion a holistic view of nature be-fore the concept of “ecology” became widely voiced. Johnson takes special care to relate their accomplishments to advances by less famous geologists and paleontologists who also ven-tured into the Gulf of California in 1940 (75 years ago in 2015) the same magical year that the chartered fishing vessel West-ern Flyer brought Ricketts and Steinbeck on their philosophical quest.

Elusive partially sank, Captain Bill lost everything. Going down with the ship, he refused to leave and stayed aboard for days. His legs became infected from the 4 feet of salt water in the boat. Fellow boaters and friends rescued Bill and took him to Loreto for medical treatment. A kind lady named Kathy Hill (Owner of Gecko’s Curios) al-lowed Bill to live on her boat, Rumbosa, indefi-nitely or until he could find another place to stay. This is one of the most touching stories in the aftermath of the hurricane.

DOG OF THE MONTHCurley is a purebred Jack Russell. He is affectionate and would be best as the only dog. We are not exactly sure of his age, 6 or more years is our estimate. He was one of the 16 dogs rescued from a puppy mill here in Loreto. He’s a sweetie and we would love him to go to a good home. There is also one more of the Jacks available.

See us on Facebook: Animalandialoreto or visit www.animalandialoreto.org

On December 16, Bodega Aurrera, which is a divi-sion of Walmart, opened it’s doors for business as planned and on schedule. Now there’s a first! More than 2,000 shoppers flocked in to scoop up opening day special bargains and to get a glimpse of the new warehouse type store. Bright green balloons were given to all the children. The new Bodega Aurrera will carry many of Walmart’s popular “Great Value” Brands. I wonder if they will allow RV’s to park overnight in there large new parking lot, like you can do in the USA? There are over 1,000 Bodega Aurrera’s and about

400 Walmarts in Mexico, according to Frederico Renteria, Corporate Supervisor. The Loreto store’s General Manager is Olga Ruiz and her Assistant Office Manager is Hec-tor Ayala. They are eager to serve all Loretanos. Behind the scenes plans are in the works. This will change the face of Loreto forever. The proposed copper mine will run 12 miles inland from the sea and extend 40 miles north to just south of Bahia Conception. Other minerals, including gold and silver, will also be extracted from the ore.

About 19 miles north of Loreto in San Bruno, a large pier will be constructed similar to the one in Santa Rosalia, to load the ore onto ships. It will then be taken by ship to be processed at an area where energy is less expensive. San Bruno is the historical spot where the Jesuits first landed back in the 1600’s and the only place that Padre Kino
