A Note From The Pastor… This weekend at all of the Masses, we will have our Annual

Catholic Sisters, Brothers, and Religious Order Priests need your

Parishes — o&en for li#le or no pay. Now there is a shortage in
re"rement savings. Your gi& to the Re"rement Fund for Religious
provides funding for medica"ons, nursing care, and more. It also
helps ensure younger members can con"nue the good works of
their elders. Please give to those who have given a life"me.
It’s the Second Sunday of Advent, so we pre#y much only have
two weeks le& given that the Fourth Week of Advent is only a few
hours long. I want to remind everyone about receiving the

Some of you have men"oned to me that you go to Marytown, the twenty-four hour
Eucharis"c Adora"on Shrine in Libertyville. They have Confessions Monday through Friday from
10:30AM to 11:30AM, and from 6PM un"l 7PM. But please note that there will be No

Marytown on January 9th.

****************************************************************
In 1531, a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to Juan Diego, a humble Na"ve
American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She
iden"fied Herself as the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for
whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and earth. She
made a request for a Church to be built on the site, and Juan Diego submi#ed
Her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested a
sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or ques"on, sending Her na"ve
messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of
roses for the Bishop.
A&er complying to the request for a sign, She le& for us an image of
Herself imprinted miraculously on the na"ve’s !lma, a poor quality
cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years, but shows no sign of
decay a&er more than 475 years later. It s"ll defies all scien"fic explana"ons
of its’ origin.
Her message is of love and compassion, and a universal promise of help
and protec"on to all mankind. An incredible list of miracles, cures, and
interven"ons are a#ributed to Her. Yearly, an es"mated 10 million visit Her
Basilica, making Her Mexico City home the most popular Marian Shrine in the
world, and the most visited Catholic Church in the world next to the Va"can.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th. In
1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily from the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of
Our Lady of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary, declared the
date of December the 12th as a Liturgical Holy Day for the whole con"nent.
During the same visit, Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to Her
loving protec"on, and placed under Her motherly care the innocent lives of
children, especially those who are in danger of not being born.
“Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that nor any other sickness or
anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my
protec!on? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What
else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything.”

New Principal Search On behalf of Fr. Paul and the
Principal Search Commi#ee, we are
pleased to announce Mrs. Dawn
Klasinski will be the Interim Principal
for the second half of the school year.
Mr. Browne’s last day at Our Lady of
Humility School is December 20th, and
Mrs. Klasinski will begin as we return to
school from Christmas Break on
January 3, 2018. Star"ng next week,
she will be working with Mr. Browne to
ensure a smooth transi"on.
Mrs. Klasinski first joined the OLH
Faculty in 2003 as a Subs"tute Teacher.
In 2008 she was hired by Mr. Browne,
and taught for the next 9 years. During
her last 3 years, she was the Assistant
Principal and Middle School
Coordinator. Her three children all
a#ended and graduated from OLH.
Our goal is to keep the School
moving in a posi"ve direc"on.
Mrs. Klasinski wants to help us through
the transi"on from Mr. Browne to our
new permanent principal for the next
school year. She possesses strong/
good/open communica"on with
teachers, faculty, staff, students, and
parents/guardians; will enforce our
standards; resolve conflicts; and
support teachers to con"nue our
educa"onal tradi"on of being,
“Catholic and Excellent”.
Mrs. Klasinski will also work closely
with the Principal Advisory Council and
the Principal Search Commi#ee who
will interview candidates in the Spring
for the posi"on of permanent principal.
Please welcome Mrs. Klasinski as our
Interim Principal. She will join us at the
Ice Cream Social next Saturday,
December 16th, from 2-4:30PM in the
Parish Center – where we will be saying
‘good-bye’ to Mr. Browne – and taping
him to the wall! We hope you will
extend a sincere farewell to
Mr. Browne. We wish him success and
happiness in his next chapter of
educa"onal administra"on, and know
his administra"ve skills will be put to
great use on the high school level!
December 10, 2017 • Second Sunday Of Advent 9
Ask A Priest
Q: How do we prepare ourselves to make a good Confession?
A: This is such an important ques"on, especially as we are now in the season of Advent. If we truly
desire to have the Messiah enter into our souls at Christmas, we need to first prepare for His arrival.
This involves emp"ng out all of the garbage, so that He might have a worthy dwelling within our hearts.
The first ques"on to consider: why do we go to Confession (the Sacrament of Penance)? Why do we need a
priest to give us words of absolu!on; if God forgives me, can’t I just cut out the middle man? Well, we need to
remember the rela"onship between Christ and the Church. The Church is the Bride of Christ; the two have
become one flesh. This means that not only are we children of God, but we are also children of the Church! The
Sacrament of Penance restores our right rela"onship with Holy Mother Church, thus enabling us to share in the
rest of her sacramental life (most especially, the Eucharist).
This should help us realize one other nuance of great significance; going to Confession is not a selfish act…it is not
about us! Rather, Confession is about God. It helps us understand God’s great mercy for each one of us, as well
as God’s power and jus"ce. Like every other sacrament, when we receive Penance, God does infinitely more for
us than we can ever return to Him.
Canon 987 of the Code of Canon Law states; ‘to receive the salvific remedy of the Sacrament of Penance, a
member of the Chris!an faithful must be disposed in such a way that, rejec!ng sins commi&ed and having a
purpose of amendment, the person is turned back to God.’
I cannot word it any be#er! When we go to Confession, we need to display three disposi"ons. First, we need a
repudia"on of sin. This means that we have sorrow for what we have done. Our sorrow is not merely a feeling,
but a deliberate act of the will. It means that we truly hate our sin, and regard sin as the greatest evil.
Second, we need a firm purpose of amendment. This means that I want to use all means necessary to avoid sin in
the future, to make necessary res"tu"on for the damages I have done, to achieve reconcilia"on with my enemies,
etc. A mere desire is insufficient (Oh, I wish I could! Oh, if only things were different, I would never do that
again!). We need to make it our pledge that we will avoid these near occasions of sin in the future. Now, it could
very well be that from my past experience, I know that I most likely will fall into the sin again. That’s ok! Humans
are not perfect; if you should fall into the same sin over and over again, come to Confession over and over again!
Repeatedly receiving and responding to God’s grace will strengthen our resolve, and give us the courage to resist
the tempta"ons of sin.
The third disposi"on necessary for a valid sacrament is conversion to God. Conversion means that we turn back
to God, that we re-orientate the direc"on of our life, turning away from selfishness, and turning back towards
God. This goes hand in hand with the other disposi"ons. By recognizing what our selfishness has done to our
rela"onship with God, we are able to hate our sins and experience that deep sorrow and repudia"on of them.
When we realize that rela"onship with God means surrendering our sinful inclina"ons, it gives us the mo"va"on
to make a firm purpose of amendment.
Now, when confessing your sins, you may or may not feel guilty about a sin you have commi#ed, and that’s ok.
Some"mes it helps to have an emo"onal response, but feelings are irrelevant to the efficacy of the sacrament.
For example, let’s say I confess that I have been stealing money from my boss. Suppose this guy is an ego"s"cal
jerk, and he doesn’t pay me nearly enough for the work I do. There is a good chance that I do not feel sorry or
guilty about my behavior! This lack of feeling is not important. As long as I realize this ac"on is aliena"ng me
from God, and that I hate this sin because it breaks my rela"onship with God, and that I make a firm commitment
to not do it anymore; I am forgiven.
I realize that I have wri#en an en"re ar"cle without answering the ini"al ques"on, so next week I will try again.
To be con"nued...!
Peace,
Fr. Mike
