SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
15TH ANNUAL SLEEP WALK
Assumption Church, Sat., May 25th at 8:00 a.m.
For the past fifteen years the Society has been rais-ing funds through our Sleep Walk to buy beds for the most needy of our community. These are people restarting their lives such as: refugees, families escaping from abusive situa-tions, and individuals devastated by addictions or financial difficulties. You can help them gain a good night’s rest, so as to be better able to face their daily challenges, by supporting our bed program. Please enclose your donations in the envelope provided and return in the offertory collection next Sunday, or at your earliest convenience..
If donating by cheque please make payable to Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Receive a tax receipt for a donation of $20 or more. Envelopes will be available in the pews and at the back of the church next week.
“A BED TO REST EVERY HEAD” THANK YOU!
HEALING MASS
Everyone is welcome to attend a Healing Mass on
Wednesday, May 29th at 7 pm at
Most Precious Blood Church
Love one another….
In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares his disciples for a
different way of life, one where he is no longer physi-
cally present to them. He reminds them of his love for
them, and teaches that they need to respond to that
love and to express it, so that others may know that
they are disciples of Jesus. He is trying to help them to
work out what it means to be a disciple.
As we hear throughout the Acts of the Apostles, the
early disciples constantly had to face misunderstanding
and even hostility. They faced crises – and they had to
make major decisions about their identity as the
Church. How open should they be? Should they close
themselves so as to preserve what they what they be-
lieved in, and keep it safe? Or should they spread the
Good News freely, and accept those who would not
traditionally have been accepted as part of their com-
munity? How should they interact with other commu-
nities?
Jesus told them that they were to learn from him.
What sort of love had Jesus shown in his life and minis-
try? Jesus’ love was not exclusive. It was not focused
only on those who seemed to be “good”. In fact, his
love reached out even more to those who were exclud-
ed, to those who were treated as “unclean” because
they had not kept the rules. St. Paul, too, knew that
God’s love could not be contained or restricted. God
reaches out to everyone. God’s love is wide enough
and deep enough to enfold everyone, whoever they
may be.
Like the first disciples, we too are followers of Christ,
and Christ calls us, as he called them, to be witnesses
READINGS FOR May 26, 2019 Sixth Sunday of Easter
First Reading: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29
Second Reading: Revelations 21:10-14, 22-23
Gospel: John 14:23-29
of his love for all. What does this mean for the Chris-
tian community today?
We are called to decide, like St. Paul and St. Peter early
in the Church’s life, what sort of community we should
be: should we be restricted and closed, in order to pro-
tect ourselves and our faith; or should we be open,
compassionate and welcoming? The early Church
chose to reach out to others. It faced difficulties, chal-
lenges and threats. It faced violence and hostility. But
even when they met opposition and persecution, the
members of those early communities continued to wel-
come and reach out to others in love.
Many people today are afraid of those who are differ-
ent from them – and this fear limits them. But if we are
confident in God’s love and choose to follow Christ’s
example, we can overcome our fear. Fear hampers true
enjoyment of life; it stops us doing things. We cannot
flourish in a state of fear – if instead of seeing possibili-
ties we see threats, instead of hope and dreams we
worry ourselves into nightmares. The early disciples
must have been afraid at times too, but their faith was
so strong that they faced their challenges with confi-
dence. Through prayer, through reflection and through
meaningful conversation with others, we too can face
our own challenges with confidence and trust in God.
