We may be eager in doing things in our life or even serving the Lord but if we are like Martha anxious, worried and complaining then it’s not pleasing to God. To please God it should flow from the loving relaonship with the Lord and a genuine desire to love and to serve God and neighbor without complaining or demanding others to do the same or be like us. Some of us should ask the queson, what is my life all about? Where is it heading to? Will Jesus tell us you have chosen the beer part and it will not be taken away or are we like Martha? SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJULY 20 & 21, 2019

We heard in today’s gospel that Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to Him and Martha, her sister, preparing the meal for Him. It is important to pay attention to the cross-

cultural aspect in the Gospel because in those days women and men were clearly separated in their roles and had specific places designated and are not allowed to cross them. The kitchen and other quarters unseen by others belong to women and the public room was where the men would meet. Mary here crosses the invisible boundary of the culture while sitting at the feet and listening to Jesus which thus moves beyond the culture and Jesus approves of it. When Martha comes to the Lord complaining about her sister not helping her (Martha is reminding the cultural norm, where women are not supposed to be at the public room where men were sitting and discussing) but Jesus says to her in a gentle but stern manner that Mary has chosen the better part. Jesus clearly declares to all that there is separation for God and all are children of God with equal dignity and honor. Jesus says to Martha that Mary has chosen the better part and it should never be taken away from her. Yes we need to know what is most important thing in life, is it work, work and work or to be with the Lord. We need to work but we should not forget ourselves and our purpose in life. Our purpose in life is not to be robots but rather be pleasing to God. We may be eager in doing things in our life or even serving the Lord but if we are like Martha anxious, worried and complaining then it’s not pleasing to God. To please God it should flow from the loving relationship with the Lord and a genuine desire to love and to serve God and neighbor without complaining or demanding others to do the same or be like us. Some of us should ask the question, what is my life all about? Where is it heading to? Will Jesus tell us you have chosen the better part and it will not be taken away or are we like Martha? Pray to God to enlighten us to discern and decide how to live our life and have God in our life and be of service to others.

Martha and Mary are the focus of this weekend’s Gospel, which abounds with rich themes about hospitality, service, and finding the right balance between action and prayerful attention to the Lord. Christians who are good stewards of their faith life reallize that if they are too busy to enjoy peaceful, private time with the Lord, then something is out of balance in their spiritual lives. If we make time for Mass, but then carry on with our busy schedules without prayer, meditation and reflection, we are missing out. If we find ourselves anxious and harried by life’s routines, could it be a sign that something in our spiritual life needs some serious attention?
