STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 20/REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 20 DE DICIEMBRE

“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” With those words from St. Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, to our Blessed Mother Mary our Gospel on this Fourth and final Sunday of Advent closes. It is appropriate that we are reminded of Mary’s stewardship just a few days before

she gives birth to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on stewardship, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, The Bishops remind us that Mary is the epitome of steward-ship: “After Jesus, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary who by her example most perfectly teaches the meaning of discipleship and stewardship in their fullest sense…she was called and gifted by God; she responded generously, creatively, and prudently; she understood her divinely assigned role in terms of service and fidelity.”

As we complete our preparations for the coming of the Lord at Christmas, we need to consider Mary’s total trust in God and her willingness to place her entire life at His service, and ours. If we can even be a fraction of the steward she was, we will be ready for Christ’s coming and better prepared to be disciples and good stewards. In the midst of our joy and celebration at this holy time, we, too, must bear in mind that we are called and chosen.

4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT / 4° DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO 3

It’s interesting how we create this mystique around Christmas Day. Having moved to California 38 years ago I have not seen many White Christmases. I love listening to the songs, White Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Jingle Bells and remember the snow from my childhood. Snow seemed to be part of Christ-mas for me. If you think about it, snow is only in the Northern Hemisphere at this time, and that’s hit and miss. In fact it rarely snows in Jerusalem. It causes me to think about others celebrating Christmas around the world. Snow “glistening in the lane” is not essential for them, but rather the birth of Jesus. When the Son of God humbled Himself by taking on the form of a human it was to show us a new way to live and has nothing to do with weather patterns. It was to help us come closer to his Father and conversion of our hearts. Let us live a little more like Jesus every day.

Thursday Night Confessions; 7pm January 7 & 14 (at Church)

God bless you all!

Fr. Jim

A pesar de haberme movido a California hace 38 años no he visto muchas Blancas Navidades.

What a special few months for Mary and Elizabeth! Mary and Jesus, Elizabeth and John – they all enjoyed a special closeness then. Like all expectant mothers, surely they wondered how life would unfold for their yet to be born children. Neither could know then how the lives of their sons would intertwine in the years ahead or how their lives would change the world. For a moment in time, they were content to pass the days with ordinary tasks – cooking, cleaning, tending the garden and of course, preparing for the babies. We can imagine days filled with loving companionship, humble service and an abiding trust in God. We too can experience those kinds of days. The ordinary moments of life have a unique way of bringing use closer to God when we turn to the needs of others in simple service.

1. How do the ordinary tasks or chores bring you closer to the people in your life?

2. How do they bring you closer to God?

Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Micah 5:1-4; Heb 10:5-10; Luke 1:39-45] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/readings/122015.cfm

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY: MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHERAÑO SANTO DE LA MISERICORDIA: MISERICORDIOSO COMO EL PADREPope Francis has asked us to be more merciful and to incorporate the Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy into our daily lives. During the year we will highlight the different acts and give concrete ideas on how to live them. Please visit www.usccb.org for more ideas.

CORPORAL ACT OF MERCY: TO FEED THE HUNGRY ◆ Having delicious food at Christmas dinner? Donate to a Christmas

food drive so everyone can have something to eat.

◆ Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry.

◆ The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.

◆ Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.

SPIRITUAL ACT OF MERCY: TO CONVERT SINNERS ◆ Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and

correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.

◆ In humility we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times

◆ Don’t judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt 7:1-2)

◆ When you correct someone, don’t be arrogant. We are all in need of God’s loving correction.

◆ We should journey together to a deeper understanding of our shared faith

◆ “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye” (Mt 7:5)
