FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Parishioners, In a newspaper article written some years ago journalist, Paula Goodyer, refers to sleep specialist, Dr Chris Seton, who believes that electronic media and mobile phone use, play a part in children‟s sleep deprivation: “Texting is worse than talking on the phone because kids stay awake waiting for the next message. Although we don‟t have good figures for this in Australia, a study of 13 year-olds in the U.S., that included checking mobile phone numbers, found that 45% of them used their phones after 3.00 a.m.”. He urged parents to be more assertive about keeping electronic devices out of children‟s bedrooms and making it a rule that mobiles stay on the kitchen table until morning.

Dr Seton suggested that the best way to judge how much sleep a child needs is to assess whether it‟s “enough for them to wake spontaneously - meaning without an alarm clock - on most mornings and avoid tiredness during the day until the last hour before bedtime”. When it comes to how much sleep our children need, the general consensus appears to be: 10-11 hours per night for children 6 to 9 years old; 9-10 hours for children 10-14 years old; ages 15 and over need 8-9 hours per night.

Children, nowadays, have a variety of sporting, cultural, academic and sometimes work commitments both before and after school. Even though these activities are important physically, socially and perhaps economically, we parents need to ensure that they are not at the expense of our children‟s required level of sleep.

Some of the symptoms of sleep deprivation in children include moodiness and irritability, temper tantrums, the tendency to emotionally “explode” at the slightest provocation, over-activity and hyperactive behaviour, grogginess when they wake up in the morning, reluctance to get out of bed in the morning. Newcastle Sleep Disorders Centre.

Sleep loss can cause a range of schooling problems including disrespectfulness, poor concentration, under performance leading to poor academic results. In teenagers, sleep deprivation can lead to problems with impulse control, which leads to risk-taking behaviours, and increased risk of depression. Surprisingly, sleep deprivation affects adults and children differently; adults tend to become drowsy, whereas, children tend to “rev-up”.

So, what advice is there for parents to assist good sleeping habits for our children? Well firstly, there is the usual piece of advice: be a role model. Model the importance of sleep, rest and relaxation; perhaps model reading before bedtime as a means to relax. No drinks that contain caffeine or food or drinks that contain lots of sugar especially late in the day. Avoid screen time at least one hour before bed. Make sleep a number one priority and monitor the effects that multiple after school activities and jobs have on the amount of sleep time that children have available.

Of course, grandparents might have some advice to offer such as, “Early to bed, early to rise enables you to be healthy, wealthy and wise”. Author unknown.

An Introduction to our School Captains and Vice Captains In today‟s Newsletter we have the opportunity to meet our School Captains and Vice Captains for 2019. I can proudly attest that within the first few weeks of the current school year they have already demonstrated outstanding role modelling. My name is Zara B. I am the only girl in the family with three brothers, and I am the second youngest in my family. My interests include dancing, drawing, laughing with my friends, watching movies with my family and listening to music; not to forget playing with my best furry friend Barkley, my dog.

Page 3: OUR HOLY REDEEMER · OUR HOLY REDEEMER ... after school activities and jobs have on the amount of sleep time that children have available. ... on Tuesday 12 March. As a consequence,

As school captain I'd like to be open to all the students and make sure they know that they can come to me with any questions or worries. I hope that I will make an impact on the school‟s choices and improve not only the school but the students and how they approach learning. As School Captain I'd like people to remember me as confident, positive, kind-hearted, funny and a creative leader at OHR.

Hello my name is Luke B and I am the youngest in my family of four. I have my dad, my mum, my sister Emma and my dog Arlo. I love to play with Arlo and compete in tennis, cricket, football and chess. I also love playing with my friends and enjoy video games. As School Captain I hope to make the school a great place to learn and have fun. I also just want the school to be the best it can be. I want to be remembered as a person who was happy to help anyone regardless of who they were or what they wanted, and someone who was kind caring and compassionate.

My name is Annabelle G. I am in a family of five and I am in the middle with an older sister and a younger brother. My favourite sports are basketball and football and I support the Hawthorn Football Club very proudly! As Vice Captain I would like to be a great role model and set great examples for my peers. I would like people to remember me as a kind, loyal and respectful leader. My name is Ava L and I am the youngest person in my family. I have a brother, a sister, a mum and a dad. My interests are reading, dancing, piano, arts and crafts, amongst other things. I also love being with my family and friends. I would like to set a good example for other students at the school by doing the right thing and being mature. I would also like to follow in my sister and brother‟s footsteps. As a Vice Captain I would like to be remembered as a kind, caring and helpful leader at OHR. I would also like people to remember me as a person that turns bad situations into better ones. Assembly At this Monday‟s Assembly we will take the opportunity to publicly welcome our 2019 Prep (Foundation) children. They all have settled well into the classroom environments of Mrs Harrison/Mrs Hollow and Mrs Hart/Mrs Vincitorio. The staff are very proud of our Years 5 and 6 students who have responsibly embraced the opportunity of acting as nurturing buddies to these young children. Combined Staff Mass Following school on Tuesday afternoon the staffs from Our Holy Redeemer and Our Lady‟s came together to celebrate mass with Father Mark. Over recent years the staffs from both our schools have had many opportunities to collaborate, namely through our involvement in the STEM Mathematics Collective and various sacramental programs. Following the mass, the two staffs socialised over some afternoon tea.

Hockey Clinics Today, all the students in Years 1 – 6 participated in Hockey Clinics. Thanks to Mrs Jo Golds for organising the clinics in which the children were provided with the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, while developing fundamental motor skills. The clinics are run by Hockey Victoria at no cost to the school. F/1/2 Parent Gathering A final reminder that the Junior School Parent Gathering at the home of Belinda and Sam Magee is scheduled for tomorrow evening. The Junior staff and I are looking forward to meeting with the parents of the children in Years Prep, 1 & 2. For those who are new to the school community, this event is for adults. Details were emailed through an invitation earlier this week. Year 3/4 Parent Gathering Thank you to Catherine and William Bromhead who have who have offered to open their home for next Friday‟s Year 3/4 Parent Gathering. Details of this event will be communicated next week. School Closure Days Each term the school schedules at least one school closure day for staff professional learning. Occasionally two will be scheduled in a given term. This term, for example, two have been programmed. Father Mark has planned a day for the two staffs of our schools, OHR and Our Lady‟s, to come together with a focus on staff spirituality. This day will be held on Friday 8 March, leading into the Labour Day long weekend. The second day, where the staff will be attending workshops at the National Gallery of Victoria will immediately follow the long weekend on Tuesday 12 March. As a consequence, no school closure days have been planned for Term 3 this year. Parent Information Evening This Wednesday 20 February, classes will be conducting Parent Information Sessions in which teachers will outline the procedures relating specifically to their classroom and, therefore, your child‟s learning for 2019. The sessions will cover topics such as homework, English, Mathematics, and routines that are specific to your child‟s class. Sessions will run for 25 minutes. As parents and teachers share joint responsibility for the education of our children, we would expect that at least one parent attend your child‟s information session. The evening will commence in the Junior (Prep and 1/2) classrooms at 6.30pm. For those families who do not have children in the Junior level, you are warmly invited to begin in the hall at 7.00pm where there will be a special presentation on Parent Engagement in their Child’s Learning by Rachel Saliba. Following the presentation, parents will be invited to move to their child‟s level where they can attend the Information Session. As some families have a number of children spread across various levels, the information session times will be staggered throughout the evening:

6.30pm: Prep and 1/2 teachers will be in the Prep and 1/2 classrooms 7.00pm: All families in the hall – Parent Engagement Information Session 7.30pm: 3/4 teachers will be in the 3/4 classrooms 8.00pm: 5/6 teachers will be in the 5/6 classrooms

The Working Bees will be coordinated by Mark Comer to address the upkeep of the school grounds and minor maintenance matters. Working Bees are a cost effective and essential means to maintaining aesthetic school grounds that afford a safe and welcoming environment for our children, parents and visitors. Working Bees provide the opportunity to connect with other families, and the children always have a great time helping out and playing with one another. A range of days and times are available to enable each family the opportunity to select the most suitable Working Bee. A complete list of dates and times may be found on the reply slip attached to today‟s newsletter. You will notice that we have alternating Saturday and Sunday Working Bees. Reply slips can be returned to the school office. Alternatively, you can email your preferred day to Mark: [email protected] We request that you look ahead at your commitments for 2019, and nominate for at least one Working Bee now. It‟s a great way to show your children that you value their school through committing to a few hours per year. Certain families were extremely generous with their time during 2018 in turning up to multiple Working Bees. The first Working Bee is a morning session (8.30am – 10.30am) scheduled for Sunday 3 March. A barbeque and refreshments will be provided during this time. Parking For the safety of all our children please observe the parking restrictions in York Street. As the sign clearly illustrates, only 2 minute parking is permissible along York Street between the two sets of school gates. This restriction is applicable from 8.30 – 9.15am and again between 3.15 – 4.00pm.

Page 6: OUR HOLY REDEEMER · OUR HOLY REDEEMER ... after school activities and jobs have on the amount of sleep time that children have available. ... on Tuesday 12 March. As a consequence,

In the interests of child safety, children should never wait alone in York Street. Children should always be collected by an adult from within the school grounds. Thank you for your understanding. Wishing you a great weekend, Frank Dame

RE NEWS Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.

Class Masses

Mass is held in the Church every Wednesday and Friday at 9:15am. Each week some of our young parishioners from OHR will join with Father Mark in celebrating the 9.15am Parish Mass and parents are always welcome. Here is the timetable for

Term 1:

Nick Byrne, Education in Faith Leader

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus came down with the Twelve and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large

gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon who

had come to hear him and to be cured of their diseases.

Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: ‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God.

Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied.

Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh. ‘Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man.

Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets.

‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now. Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep.

1. Have you known anyone who has felt sad? 2. What can you do if someone is feeling like that?

3. God looks after us, no matter what happens, even when people are unkind to us. How can we look after others the way God looks after us?

OHR Foodbank 2019 Over the past 10 years there has been a "Foodbank Roster" in operation at OHR. This is a register of parents who have volunteered to be called upon by the Co-ordinator to provide a meal to a fellow school family during a time of need eg, after the birth of a baby, during a time of illness or bereavement. Over this time, we have provided around 500 meals for families through this service. When the need arises, I send out an email to all on the Foodbank Roster data base. The email has a link to a roster, where you choose a day that suits you to cook a meal or snacks, (or both), you don't need to be a gourmet chef. Anything you cook for your family will be appreciated by the recipient. Meals are left at the Office in time for school pick up. This is my first year as Co-ordinator, having just taken over from the amazing Helena Chinnock. Having been a recipient of this wonderful service myself, I know firsthand what a difference it can make for families. In order to get this brilliant initiative up and running again this year I need a new army of volunteers! If you think you are in a position this year to be called upon to provide a meal at some stage, then I would really appreciate you filling in the form below and returning it to me via the black pouches. The Roster is refreshed every year so even if you have volunteered previously, I will need you to fill in a new form for this year. Thank you for considering this request.
