Community Group ReportsOwhango School News

It was with great sadness that we received the news that our former principal, Joy Brown, had passed away after a long illness. The school had a memorial afternoon where we planted a magnolia tree at the entrance, and unveiled ‘Joy’s Chair’, a swing seat. We are indebted to Joy for the hard work she put into our school, and putting in place systems that have ensured we have a well-run school with the children at it's heart and focus.

Owhango School had a very successful ski camp to Tukino Ski field recently. This was the first time we had taken the whole school on an overnight camp, let alone a ski camp. The facilities were perfectly set up for our sized school- we booked out all three lodges, and had the whole ski field toourselves for four days. I’m unsure what the children enjoyed the most- mastering the nutcracker rope tow, endless skiing with their mates, playing in the snow, sleeping on the mountain, playing cards and other games in the evenings, cooking and doing dishes or just hunkering down when there was a blizzard outside. It was such a resounding success that we are planning to make this a biennial event, alternating years with our normal ski trips at Whakapapa.

We have been navigating our way through the current Covid-19 restrictions, especially the limit of 100 people gathering. Unfortunately, it has meant that our biennial school show, Rock Bottom- A Hysterical Pre-historical Musical, is limited to a small audience of just 45 people! This means we are only allowing the school families to attend. If this restriction is lifted in time, then, everyone in the community is invited; the matinee performance will be on Wednesday 23rd September at

11:00am and the evening performance is on Thursday 24th September at 6:00pm in the Owhango Hall.
