Long-term relationships and personal service have beenthe hallmark of Sun Shop Gas & Carryout, owned by TonyZeakes, his wife Mary and brother David. They’ve ownedthis gasoline-c store, one of two, since the late 1970s. Thestore became a licensed Ohio Lottery retailer in 1987.

Sun Shop Gas & Carry Out is a top-performing store inBelmont County.

It’s all about personal service and building customerrelationships. In fact, when the store was offered a ticketvending machine, the Zeakes declined the offer.

“It’s hard to stay competitive,” Tony says. “When you have amachine, you lose that personal touch…The important partis to recognize and acknowledge your customers. The onlydifference is how you treat them.”

The store runs with the assistance of nine employees. Storemanager Chuck Bellville and a number of employees havebeen with the business for many years.

“He’s on top of everything -- what’s coming out, what we’redoing,” Tony says. He calls Chuck the backbone of thestore’s operation. He knows he is lucky. Tony recently hired anew employee who had some lottery sales experience, whichhe says is a plus.

“Make sure Lottery games are visible,” he says, “if not, they’re out of mind.” He knows how important it is toproperly display Lottery games, and makes sure the storecarries the latest games.

Tony, a retired banker, and his brother David, who workedin plant security at a local mill, fill in more now that theyare retired, and that offers some flexibility to their loyalemployees. He knows the local economy is a challenge totheir business.

“It’s a good business because it (Lottery) adds to our bottomline. It really helps and we don’t have to worry about payingfor inventory or extra employees,” Tony says.

Chuck, who manages this store and another for the Zeakes, grew up around the Zeakes’ business operations, gettinghis start pumping gas quite a few years ago. He’s on callbetween Sun Shop Gas & Carry Out and Zeakes Sunoco &Carryout, also in Bridgeport. Chuck gives credit to his stafffor making it all work.

“We have a lot of good employees. Without them it wouldbe different,” he says. He calls sales representative RickRowlands, “helpful, humble and generous” and has enjoyedthe relationship he and his staff have built with him andother Lottery sales representatives over the years.

Customers are always in the forefront. “We treat them alllike family. They are a part of our life, and a lot of them feelthe same,” Chuck says.

Long-term relationships and personal service havemade Sun Shop Gas & Carry Out a top-performingLottery retailer. Customers are like family and the ownersand employees pride themselves on helping customers withall their Lottery game purchases.
