(No) Substitute for God from Pastor Austin

God is love. 1 John 4:8 & 16

On Pastor Ann‟s last Sunday with us she shared with us a gift that I would like to share with those of you who were not present. As she introduced the song “(Love Will) Hold Us Together,” she reflected on the scripture passage that concluded my sermon. She noted that because we say “God is love,” she sometimes reads passages like Paul‟s famous treatise on Love, and substitutes “God” for the word “Love.” For example, “God is patient; God is kind; God is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. God does not insist on God‟s own way; God is not irritable or resentful; God does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. God bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. God never ends” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

There is no substitute for Love. It is the greatest thing we can know, just as God is the greatest thing

we can know. Funny how it worked out like that (at least until we begin to realize all the funny ways that God works. These greatest things—Love and God—do not behave in the ways most humans understand greatness to behave.

Because God works in mysterious

ways, we need to use all of the available resources to help us understand God. There is a children‟s rhyme that calls out a poet who “doesn‟t even know it,” but poets who pontificate on Love, may be theologians without knowing it. Ann‟s simple word play exercise reveals hidden theological insights even in popular music.

“My heart's on fire. The flame grows higher. So I will weather the storm. Why do I care how much it may storm? I've got my God to keep me warm.” -Irving Berlin “God is a many-splendored thing.”

-penned by Paul Francis Webster recorded by The Four Aces and others

“I'd gladly walk across the desert

With no shoes upon my feet

To share with you the last bite

Of bread I had to eat

I would swim out to save you

In your sea of broken dreams

When all your hopes are sinkin'

Let me show you what God means.

God can build a bridge.

“Let my God open the door To your heart.”

-Pete Townsend

“God is blindness. I don‟t want to see.”

-U2 Love is Blindness

“As I walk through this wicked world

Searching for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself „Is all hope lost?

Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?‟

And each time I feel like this inside

It just makes me want to say

„What‟s So Funny

„Bout Peace, God, and Understanding‟”

-Elvis Costello

“And just before the flood comes

Just before the night falls

Just before the blood runs

Into the valley

Just before my eyes go

Just before it all blows to pieces

God throws a line to you and me.”

-Patty Griffin Love Throw A Line

“What do you love more than God?

-Dar Williams What Do You Love More than Love

“God Will Find a Way”

-Sam Cooke

“All you need is God.

Love is all you need.

-The Beatles

These examples are just a few of the insights God

is just waiting for us to find. This is just what

immediately came to my mind. There are certainly

many others. What songs do you know that can help

us better understand God and Love? Maybe we‟ll

sing one of your suggestions some Sunday. If we

collect enough good songs, we might compile them in

a future message. Share the love.

Our expenses as noted below have been more in line with the exception of the

need to replace the large stainless refrigeration unit in the kitchen. Financially the

impact will be felt next month [June] but donations for the replacement unit which cost us

$2,786.21 are being accepted to offset our maintenance and repair expense line. The

budget will be reexamined as we have less staff as of July 1 with Pastor Ann’s new

appointment to Colby UMC. Staff Parish Relations Committee is continuing to look for

music staff to support Sunday worship so we are holding funds to support new staff

hiring. The jump in income received reflects the yard sale deposits in May.

Income collected in April 2011 vs. May 2011

Total Income: April $15,378.52 May $18,790.65

Pledges received to date: $49,926.25

Open plate received to date: $4,690.84

Pledges giving in full April 47% May 50%

Pledges overpaid April 21% May 26%

Pledges underpaid April 32% May 24%

Our budgeted Expenses monthly are on track except for repairs and maintenance.

Expenses paid in April: $21,751.68

Expenses paid in May: $12,701.61

The Finance committee also explored moving some of the ―low interest‖ savings

fund to the Northwest United Methodist Foundation for investment with a better return.

Administrative Council is working on authorization towards the goal of improved

investment return.

Please remember that we benefit from your shopping at Sunshine Fruit Stand,

Safeway and Albertson purchase programs and donating used ink cartridges and cell

phones. Monthly donations are automatically made to our Good Samaritan Fund in form

of electronic scrip rebates. Need more information or want to sign up please speak to

Dona for forms. Our deposits add $10 to $15 monthly to Good Samaritan Fund.

Thank you for your gifts and support. We appreciate the attention paid to pledge

payment and help with our unexpected expenses.
