Greetings to all! As many of you already know, we, our country and our world lost a great evangelist and a holy lady. Mother An-gelica of EWTN died Easter Sunday. I am sharing a bit of information about her passing with you. May we all be inspired by her life and ministry that she lived and shared with us, so that we may be prepared for heaven! Many people have noted how fitting it seemed that Moth-er Angelica passed away on Easter Sunday, the day on which Christians celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection and triumph over death. Now, new details are emerging about her final days that show even more interesting convergen-ces between her life and the liturgical calendar. “It was on Good Friday,” EWTN Chaplain Fr. Joseph Wolfe explained in a sermon he gave recently about Moth-er Angelica’s death, “that I heard from one of the caregiv-ers who was helping Mother.” He continued: “Mother began to cry out early in the morning from the pain that she was having. She had a frac-ture in her bones because of the length of time she had been bedridden. They said you could hear it down the hallways that she was crying out on Good Friday from what she was going through. These two people said to me she has excru-ciating pain.” Fr. Wolfe saw a special meaning in her suffering on Good Friday, the day on which Christians remember Christ’s pas-sion and death on the cross. “Well, do you know where that word ‘excruciating’ comes from? Ex, from, cruce, from the cross. Excruciating pain.” But the pain didn’t last all day. “After the 3 o’clock hour arrived on Good Friday she was more calm, she was more peaceful.” Three o’clock is the time at which Jesus died on the cross, according to the Bible. Holy Saturday was more peaceful, but Fr. Wolfe visited her again. “On Holy Saturday, I also visited. I had this de-sire to thank her. We have benefited by her witness, her teaching.” But early on Easter Sunday, Mother Angelica started to struggle again and Fr. Wolfe was called by one of the sis-ters. When he arrived, he started Last Rites, which is a col-lection of prayers and sacraments given to those near death. She was anointed, pardoned, and prayed over. Mass was offered in her room, and she received the Eucharist. Later that afternoon, as it became clear that she would die soon, those around her simply prayed. “It was in the afternoon that Father Miguel and I went to her bed at the hour of mercy, at 3 o’clock,” Fr. Wolfe explained. “We had just finished praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet. We all continued to pray silently around her bed. Then it was shortly before 5 p.m. that she went to the Father’s house. She breathed her last.” ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO HER, O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON HER!

Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, PCPA, was an American Franciscan nun best known as a television personality and the founder of both the internationally-broadcast cable television network Eternal Word Televi-sion Network and the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eter-nal Word.Born: April 20, 1923, Canton, OhioDied: March 27, 2016, Hanceville, AlabamaTV show: EWTN Global Catholic NetworkBooks: The Promised Woman, I Am His Temple, In the Shadow of His LightParents: John Rizzo, Mae Helen GianfransiscoOrganizations founded: EWTN Global Catholic Network, Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I write today to express my gratitude for your gener-ous response to our 27th Annual African Mission Appeal which was held in our parishes on March 5th and 6th. Your wonderful generosity demonstrates your spiri-tual unity with Pope Francis’ strong pastoral dedication to the poor. The money collected for the African Mission Appeal supports our missionary activity in Kisii, Kenya, East Africa. You can be very proud of all the missionary work that we are able to accomplish because of your generos-ity. On behalf of our poor brothers and sisters and all the orphaned children whom you have helped, I offer my heartfelt thank you. I hope you get a chance to read about the exciting min-istry that Brent and Jessica Naslund and their family are accomplishing because of your support in the quarterly issues of the Kenya Connection newsletter. They are full of interesting articles describing the wonderful work and ministry made possible by your contributions. More in-formation can also be found on our diocesan website and the African Mission Facebook page. Once again, I thank each and every one of you who supported our African Mission Appeal. You are faithful and generous stewards.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David D. KaganBishop of Bismarck

Stewardship Thought “Blessed are they who have not seen and have be-lieved,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. For those who have not seen to believe, however, we must be good stewards of our faith, living it joyfully and sharing it generously. Then, in our time too, “men and women in great numbers” will be “added to the Lord.”• Stewardship is not just job-oriented or project-minded. It is a way of life for a lifetime.• Does your husband have a Will? If not, you as wife and mother may be risking a great loss.

Sunday Readings and BackgroundsDIVINE MERCY SUNDAYWeek of April 3, 2016

Reading I : Acts 5:12-16The number of women and men who came to believe increased steadily.• The first reading from Acts of the Apostles

summarizes the ideal Christian community.• Today’s passage describes the witness of the

community to outsiders.• The Christian community continues the healing

ministry of the Risen Christ.

Reading II : Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19I was dead and now I am to live for ever and ever.• Today’s reading from Revelation recounts the

first vision of the book.• The author describes a vision of the victorious

Christ holding all power, even over death.• Christ is the beginning and the end, his power

endures beyond all persecution.

Gospel : John 20:19-31After eight days Jesus came in and stood among them.• The Gospel passage narrates two appearances of

the risen Jesus. In both stories, his first words are “Peace be with you.”

• Jesus sent his disciples out with the gift of peace, to be signs of his healing presence in the world.

• The second appearance involves the apostle Thomas who needs evidence of Jesus’

resurrection.

MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER

Our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared 2016 an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. He is asking each of us to explore how we can become more “Merciful like the Father” (Luke 6:36). What does this mean

for us as Catholics and as members of St. Mary’s Parish Family?! Join us for a time of reflection and focus on our growth in mercy.

This promises to be a rich experience and an opportunity to have Fr. Robert teach us and lead us in prayer, reflection, and sharing on how God touches us with mercy and challenges us to do the

same with those we encounter each day.
