> Understanding the sustainability aspects through the full
product life cycle and driving relevant improvements in
context of future demands
> Achieving our sustainability objectives with transparent
partnership projects involving our stakeholders
> Adopting secondary policies in the areas of environmental
affairs, corporate and social responsibility
Key Principles
The key principles underpinning Ardagh’s approach to sustainability are:
About this documentSustainability is a journey rather than a destination. The starting point for
our journey is the fact that the materials we use are inherently sustainable,
but there are other steps that need to be taken.
Many of the key elements of Ardagh Group’s sustainability strategy are already in place and
we are actively working towards full implementation across all areas of the business. This now
culminates in transparent sustainability reporting in line with GRI (Global Reporting Initiative)
guidelines. Our Group Sustainability Report can be found on our website.

Manufacturing plant in Conklin, New York
This greenfield plant building used construction
methods that promote environmentally friendly and
energy efficient technologies.
Zero Landfill:The Ardagh facility in Conklin is one of the few
LEED certified manufacturing facilities in North
America, recycling ALL generated waste and
operating with a zero-landfill policy. The plant is also
maintained with non-hazardous, biodegradable
cleaning products only.

The SAVE FOOD initiative is a joint campaign
instituted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation
of the United Nations and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH
to fight global food loss.
SAVE FOOD aims at networking stakeholders in
industry, politics and research, encouraging
dialogue and helping to develop solutions along the
food value chain. One of its aims is to enlist the
support of industry in initiating and sponsoring its
own SAVE FOOD projects.
SAVE FOOD premiered in May 2011 with an
international congress at Interpack, the world’s most
important trade fair for the packaging industry.
Enhanced post-consumerglass recycling The Ardagh glass plants in Europe initiated a
project to significantly improve the quality of
recycled post-consumer cullet (recycled glass).
One of the major objectives was to reduce the
amount of Pb-contaminations from lead crystal or
industrial glass, through enhancing the treatment
and sorting process at the cullet treatment plant.
The project team consisted of managers and
technical experts from procurement, quality
management, Ardagh’s operations and, most
importantly, our suppliers.
After a long assessment and analytical phase, an
agreement was found on the specification and
process requirements. In less than two years the
suppliers invested in new leading edge detection
and sorting technology. Now all our strategic
suppliers control the minimum level of Pb cullet
contamination which means we have achieved a
significant step in process and product control.
These are now equipped with the best available
technique for lead sorting and are able to market
the highest cullet quality. While reducing the
concentration of Pb contamination we are still able
to keep high recycled content levels.
The overall benefit is the controlled and optimised
utilisation of post-consumer cullet under lead
limiting packaging regulations.

Environmental performanceEnvironmental sustainability targets have been defined and
agreed with the European Glass division as part of the
strategic plan 2010. The targets are based on absolute
performance data 2007 and aim for a positive long term
development by 2017.
Environmental management is fundamental to our business
performance in both our glass and our metal operations.
An established philosophy of continuous improvement
supports the implementation and maintenance of environmental
management systems at all our manufacturing plants.
We are proactively improving our environmental performance in
areas such as emissions reduction, increasing recycling rates,
minimising raw material consumption and material waste, and
optimising logistics.
We manage sustainable development by monitoring and
reviewing key performance indicators for relevant environmental
impacts (environmental KPI’s) and checking against our
environmental targets, with the full support of Ardagh’s
Executive Management Team.

From 2009 to 2010 our European Metal Operation reduced its
energy consumption by 2.6% through an operational energy
reduction programme. The North American Metal Operation
achieved energy reductions of 5% in the same period though
environmental programmes focused on training and awareness
as well as compressed air supply, motor upgrades, re-lamping
and combustion improvements.

Business Performance
SedexArdagh Group participates in Sedex, the Supplier
Ethical Data Exchange, where customers are open
for a transparent exchange on ethical performance.
The membership allows for sharing ethical supply
chain data along the supply chain. It is an effective
means for demonstrating that our operations
apply good practices on working conditions,
environmental and health & safety standards.
Group Talent Management Programme
Ardagh is focused on ensuring that we have the right people
with the right skills at the right time. As such a programme of
opportunities has been developed to support our approach to
people development.
From a clear and robust introduction process which identifies
the needs of all new employees and seeks to meet these
through focused training and mentoring support to clearly
publicised skills matrices for different roles and levels,
everything possible is done to ensure that all employees have
access to information on how to develop their careers within
the Ardagh Group.
Particular focus is placed on Leadership skills and training is
provided through a partnership with the Leadership Trust (a
UK based organisation with a portfolio of international clients).
Special attention is paid to safety and all employees receive
practical training focused on their behaviour towards safety as
well as processes and procedures. In addition strong
management training is made available at all levels to ensure
sustainable development of skills to provide a platform for
growth for the business. In 2011 we trained 53 people.
In 2012 an International Traineeship was launched designed
to identify and develop the leaders of the future. This
programme combines practical delivery of projects around the
world with supportive development of leadership and
management skills. Project work is part of our approach to
improving the business and Lean Six Sigma is the chosen
approach to process improvement - designed to ensure we
continually challenge and change.
We are committed to developing our people to their full
potential to ensure a sustainable workforce who are engaged
and committed to the future of our business.

with the ISO 2600 principles through its Codex and
Policy which include:
> Ardagh Group is a financially sound business and is well placed for future growth
> Further growth through acquisition continues to be a core strategy
> On a pro-forma basis, Ardagh Group has global sales in excess
of €4.1 billion
> Since 1998 Ardagh has spent more than €3.0 billion building
our business (acquisitions)
> Capital investment has averaged 6.5% of sales over the
last 5 years

Ardagh has been actively supporting our customers in the
development and implementation of more environmentally
friendly packaging design. Weight reduction has been a major
priority in both the glass and metal sectors of our business.
Best in class product design, and production simulation
technology, combined with investment in new process
and inspection machinery have enabled typical weight
reductions of 30% in the last 20 years for both Glass and Metal
standard and proprietary containers.
In 2011 and 2012 we
experienced Ardagh Group to
be a responsible business partner,
who is proactively implementing its
sustainability strategy. We have been
using Ardagh's expertise on a procedure
to develop of a lightweight bottle procedure
that will be implemented by Heineken
worldwide. In addition, we worked
together on the pilot phase of
Heineken’s Environmental Scorecard
for packaging suppliers.

Next StepsArdagh Group is working towards alignment and integration of
policies and standards across all sites of its glass and metal
operations. As part of this process, an integrated sustainability
strategy is being implemented.
