Day 1: arrival & OuluArrival to Oulu where Finnature’s guidewill be waiting to welcome us. Oulu is aport on the northeast shore of the Gulfof Bothnia. It is situated barely 150 milessouth of the Arctic Circle in the ‘armpit’of Miss-Finland. Oulu is the place forOwls. During these two days we areconcentrating on finding the five mostwanted birds: Pygmy, Tengmalm’s, Ural,Hawk and Great Grey Owl. We will havea try for our first Owl already at the firstnight. In deep taiga forest Crested Titsand other warning passerines might giveaway the male Pygmy Owl perching in atree. Night in Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu.Day 2: LiminganlahtiWe start the day with a special effort tofind the Terek Sandpiper. Oulu is one ofthe last places in Finland where this rarebird still breeds. There are only few pairsbreeding in Finland and this is one areawhere Finnature’s local knowledge reallycomes to the fore. Other waders in thismorning might include Temminck’s Stintwith its butterfly display as well as Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers. Around noon we will visit at Liminganlahti, an internationally important wetland that harbors thousands of waders and ducks.Hundreds of young Whooper Swans and

Common Cranes spend their summer inthe bay area. Usual sightings here include White-tailed Eagle and Marsh Harrier and also Peregrine is a daily visitor from the nearby bog. The spectacular Ruff lek takes place here in Liminganlahti. Different colored males are concentrated on winning the females’ attention - sometimes it gets really exciting! After watching the tournament we will enjoy a lovely lunch at the Liminganlahti Visitor Centre. In the afternoon we will go for the notorious Ural Owl. This elusive Owl is the most difficult of them all to see – they have better eyes than we! With carefulapproach this beautiful pale colored birdcan be seen. Although lying on thethreshold of Lapland, some ‘nightsingers’ are found in Oulu area in mostyears. In the late evening excursionthere might be a chance to find ThrushNightingale and Blyth’s Reed Warbler –and perhaps even Corncrake. River andMarsh Warblers are not entirelyexcluded either. Short-eared Owls arepresent and in some years also Long-31eared Owls come to these latitudes. Allsuch excursions are always optional.Night in Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu.

Along theway we will stop to scan some of theextensive forest bogs and lakes. Kuusamo stands out as the top-level birding place in Finland where also theannual national ‘bird-race’ is run. In Kuusamo we can expect to encounter areal feast for eye in the expansive taigaforests. While Goldeneye, Wood Sandpiper and Brambling are common, the real draw here is the undisputed listof eastern and northern species: Red-flanked Bluetail, Little and RusticBunting, Arctic Warbler, Siberian Tit, andSiberian Jay – just to name a few. Otherspecies might include Bohemian

The terrain is mostly easy to walk but will involve one or two steep uphill climbs, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this excursion. During an afternoon trip to a dry pine forest our aim is to see Siberian Tit and Parrot Crossbill. The lakes nearby provide good birding sites with Smew, Red-necked Grebe and other waterfowl. Beautiful bogs are home to waders such as Spotted Redshank, Broad-billedSandpiper and Jack Snipe. In mostyears Hawk Owl breeds in Kuusamoregion. Although being a diurnal bird,Hawk Owl is surprisingly hard to find.Hopefully we will end our day withimages of this wanderer of the wild inour minds. Night in Sokos HotelKuusamo.

Day 6: KuusamoThere is plenty room for Grouses inforests surrounding Kuusamo. Thismorning we will go for Grouses. We willhead to the vast forests that extendaround Kuusamo and look for theCapercaillie and Black and Willow

Grouse. A moderate walk to the beautifulold forest area, Oulanka National Park, might give us sightings of the elusiveHazel Grouse and Siberian Jay. A naturalpreserve adjoining the PaanajärviNational Park on the Russian side of theborder, Oulanka is the westernmostextreme of the taiga or boreal coniferousforest zone. In addition to the spruceforests with beard lichen and thick moss, lichenous upland pine forests, wild rivervalleys and watery aapa mires, Oulankaalso preserves wild life’s innumerablerarities. Its river valley flora and fauna isa distinctive mix of northern, eastern andsouthern species and you can find e.g.Calypso here. Narrow shoulderedSiberian spruce forests, home of BrownBears, Golden Eagles and Dipperscreate a strong sense of the borealriverine wilds. Night in Sokos hotelKuusamo.

Day 3: the story of the tar cityFinnish buffet breakfast is served in hotelrestaurant. After breakfast meet your safari guides in hotel lobby, coach transfer to the boats. Today we turn back in time to more than one hundred years ago, when Oulu lived from the tar and the Salmon the river provided. We take the bus to the Turkansaari outdoor museum, where our guides dressed in vintage clothing of the era are looking forward to meeting us. Also you and the other guests will have a suitable flannel shirt and felt hat. First, we will explore the history of tar in an exhibition, which takes you to a journey from the living tree into the barrel and then further down the river towards the world market. After a visit to the café we hop on to a long traditional tar boat and follow the old route towards the sea. Luckily, nowadays these boats have engines to guarantee a comfortable and secure cruise. We disembark at one of the most magnificent estates along the River Oulu, Maikkula Estate, and our guides engage you to the colorful history of the house, which has been renovated to its former glory as well as to a restaurant. What better place to have a delicious lunch. After lunch our guests can have a go at the skills required in the old days in the not-so-serious Tar Olympics. The activities follow the route of the tar. First we strip the tree using a barking tool, saw it into manageable pieces and finally we have to

chop them into a size that can be burned later on. Then we lay the chopped wood and light the funnel-shaped tar pit. As the smoke ascends, we get to load the barrel and learn how to use the finished product of tar. The pleasant smell of tar will follow you home, as each of our guests applies tar to a small wooden souvenir to take home with them. The day ends with a traditional Finnish evening at the wonderful Maikkulan Kartano. The menu for the evening consists of local delicacies, and there will be Finnish music and dancing as well. After the dinner coach transfer to the hotel.

In the village you will find lots of hands-on activities.

ProgramThe program starts from the archaeological exhibition, where a film about the research history will be shown. On the way to the Stone Age village the guide will tell you about the life 6000 years ago. How did the people live? What

was their typical day like? How did they build their huts? The Stone Age village isonly 500 meters away from the main building. You get to explore the dwellings of the Stone Age and have a chance to practice ancient bow shooting. You can try grinding stone objects at the stone smith's lean-to. For example, test out if you can form an arrowhead from stone by using just sand and water! Your group will be guided back to the main building.

The historical Uusi Seurahuone building offers you suitable premises for more trivial occasions as well as special, ceremonial events. All of our facilities are restored and beautiful entities in which appropriate modern technology is utilized and available. Our premises are wonderfully suited also for smaller groups but work equally well as the venue for larger public events.

The restaurant is located in the citycenter at the marketplace next tothe beautiful seashore. There areseveral hotels in walking distanceand the restaurant is very easy toreach.

Our kitchen is known for its quality selection of foods. Our menus follow the changing seasons, combining the flavors of the pure Northern nature and traditional French cuisine in a modern way. The fresh, domestic flavors of spring and summer, the yield of the waters, fresh autumn berries, mushrooms and game all offer wonderful experiences worth trying. The dark winter complements our selection with deeper flavors brought out by longer cooking times and different seasonings. Each changing month and season brings something new onto our kitchen work boards, with an emphasis on our Northern flavors.

Our specialty "Grandma’s Kitchen" -just like Grandma used to make, traditional Northern Ostrobothnianfood at its best.

HistoryIt appears difficult to guess the trueage of this wooden building. It was first mentioned in documents in 1850. It is known that the oldest part of the house used to be used to store big boat parts and motors. Today this traditional restaurant still radiates the worker charm of the former storehouse - high rooms with dark, sturdy wooden walls. The rooms were also previously used to store sugar and salt. Pikisaari is a small island which waswell known for its shipbuilding industry. The restaurant was named after one of the last ships which was built on the island: Sokeri-Jussi (Sugar-Jack). This boat waited for years in the present-day Restaurant Sokeri-Jussi for its motor. It is said that a consultant from a Finnish

sugar firm had fallen into a sugar barrel during work. A while later he was building a boat in Oulu for the sugar export and gave it the name Sokeri-Jussi. Unfortunately the boat was sold during the Second World War to Italy, where it supposedly melted away in the Mediterranean Sea.

The RestaurantThe Restaurant Sokeri-Jussin Kievari has pampered its guests since 2001. The restaurant has seating for 150 guests spread over two floors. During the bright Nordic summer the inviting outdoor terrace offers an additional 100 seats. The Sokeri-Jussin Kievari serves local country inn dishes using the best Finnish ingredients. It is known for its traditional Finnish cuisine and its specialities from the Oulu region.

The Geopark’s special arctic character, long winter and Finnish traditions make it an interesting area for a variety of visitors. During the winter months, in the middle of a snowy landscape and frozen lakes, you are able to get a feel for a way of life and scenery of which characterized the last Ice Age. The characteristic features of the area consist of landforms shaped by the Ice Age and include glacial ridges, pine and lichen-clad heaths, kettle holes and

small ponds filled with crystal clear water.

The Geopark consists of the River Oulujoki Valley, Rokua Esker and dune area and the area surrounding Lake Oulujärvi. The areas are linked by the Rokua esker field and its geo sites, which were formed on top of ancient bedrock during the withdrawal phase of the last Ice Age. In addition to the geology, the areas are also connected by the prehistory of the people who

followed the withdrawal of the ice sheet and the sea.
