BRIEF: To design the Yearbook for Printed Textiles and Surface pattern,

following Leeds College of Art guidelines and best reect the courses design.

RELATION TO DESIGN PRACTICE: This brief gave me the chance to work not only with

a live client and collaborate with fellow students, but send a full publication to print.

This entailed collecting work, costing the print specking it and sending it to professional

printers. I was also nominated as project leader which meant, organising the team of

designers and working with the course leaders. Initially we were two separate groups

merged into a group of 5 so immediately we had to get our concepts together and

create a meld between the two.

The concept for the book was to showcase the stages within which the

students worked, using the book to map out 3 different categories; initial

ideas, development and nal production. That way there was a clear

narrative to the book. I set out the book in a clear fashion, and delegated

everyones roles to match the sections within the book and to also play to

    each designers strength.

Initially I was responsible for establishing brand guidelines for the book to help

explain the narrative, whilst leasing with the course leaders to explain the

narrative and structure of the book.

After various meetings with the course leaders we established that they were

not looking for a standard yearbook style book, but instead a coffee table

style book which meant exploring dynamic ways to showcase the images.

This gave me the chance to develop my skills with layout and create a range

of different ways to have the images set on the page. Whilst establishing

this structure, I also developed a way in which the type could be displayed

    alongside the images.

In order for the content to best represent our concepts we had to go an

photograph certain images ourselves, which entailed visiting the studio

and organising times with students to best get shots of them working. We

also had to rely on students submitting the work that they wanted in the

yearbook, organising a place within which they could send their work to us.

Unfortunately not all the students submitted there work which meant we had

to substitute with images we had taken, or showcase images of students

    already in the book.

I then re-delegated the sections of the book to the designers in order to put

the nal layout and style together.

Once proofed I got the opportunity to send the work to the printers, this

involved following the specic guidelines that they had set out and xing any

problems that we encountered within the printing process.
