1 OSTEOLOGY HANDS-ON WORKSHOP
09:00-15:00 Hungary
Room: Pyrmont Theatre meeting rooms
max. 25 participants (hands-on)
Model: Pig Jaws
Theoretical background:
• Advanced ridge defects present one of the greatest challenges of bone regeneration in implant dentistry• There are several techniques available to reconstruct these deficiencies• The Sausage Technique presents one of the least invasive technique that provides good bone support for implants long-term• Re-establishment of the vestibule and keratinised tissue after vertical and horizontal augmentation• The use of a strip gingival graft in combination with a collagen matrix to reconstruct the aforementioned soft tissue
Hands-on part – techniques presented:
• Learn the surgical principles of ridge augmentation surgery using the Sausage Technique• Learn membrane placement, membrane stretch and fixation techniques• Learn the three steps of flap advancement techniques to achieve tension free closure• Learn how to protect the mental nerve from injury• Learn the double layer suture technique to achieve a safe soft-tissue adaptation after ridge augmentation• Learn how to harvest a strip gingival graft whilst minimising the morbidity traditionally associated with autogenous soft tissue graft harvesting• Learn how create a Modified Apically Positioned Flap (MAPF), along with suturing techniques to secure both the strip gingival graft, as well as the collagen matrix

placement
Theoretical background:
• Is guided bone regeneration a safe therapy and what is known about long-term results?• New innovative clinical approaches will be demonstrated to solve the problem of hard- and soft tissue volume stability• Are there reliable off-the-shelf solutions that will bring us to the next level of soft tissue regeneration
Hands-on part – techniques presented:
• New surgical techniques for simultaneous GBR and Implant placement using stabilised graft materials (L-shape technique)• Handling of the GBR materials• Stabilising graft materials• Handling and management of the soft-tissues

Ti-Mesh
Different reconstructive procedures are nowadays available to allow for implant placement in severely atrophic partially or totally edentulous ridges, such as GBR with particulate grafts with resorbable or non-resorbable membranes or autogenous bone block grafts. These procedures are both reliable, but sometimes time-consuming and very technically demanding in terms of adaptation and fixation of the grafts, both particulate or in blocks.
Recently, customised, CAD/CAM titanium meshes are available on the market with the aim of offering results similar to those obtained with the traditional reconstructive procedures, whilst also allowing for the relevant simplification of the surgical procedure.
The production of these Ti-Meshes is in fact performed on personalised 3-D models obtained by CBCTs of the atrophic area of each patient, allowing an extreme precision and simplification of the adaptation of the mesh to the defect to be reconstructed.
The aim of this workshop is to teach all participants how to perform all of the surgical steps of the reconstructive procedure of partially edentulous jaws with customised Ti-Meshes with the aid of both didactic (including detailed slides & procedural videos) and hands-on (using both animal (pig jaw) and synthetic models) sessions.
Learning Objectives
• How to optimise pre-operative planning of a clinical case in need of reconstruction of an atrophic edentulous ridge with a customised Ti-Mesh• How to optimise incision lines of soft tissues to access the defect• How to choose the grafting materials for guided bone regeneration (GBR) with Ti-meshes • How to harvest bone chips with bone scrapers from intra-oral sites (mandibular ramus; hands-on exercises using an animal (pig jaw) model)• How to optimize the combination of autogenous bone chips with bovine bone mineral for GBR (hands-on exercises using a synthetic model simulating an edentulous area of the jaw)• How to adapt the preformed Ti-Mesh to the defect and how to stabilise it with titanium screws (hands-on exercises using a synthetic model simulating an edentulous area of the jaw)• How to optimise the use of collagen membranes over the Ti-Meshes prior to soft-tissue closure• How to release mucoperiosteal flaps to obtain a water-tight and tension- free suture (hands-on exercises using an animal (pig jaw) model)

This course will focus on optimising surgical skills for flap management in periodontal and peri-implant regenerative surgery.
New insights into the structural anatomy and the biological processes of soft tissue healing support the importance of optimal flap tension in periodontal and peri-implant surgery.
Mastering visual-spatial skills and psychomotor expertise for control of flap tension requires training. This hands-on course will focus on practical skills and exercises to facilitate evaluation of and control of flap tension for periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. Participants will be introduced to specific techniques using various biomaterials for a range of clinical procedures to enhance wound stability and optimise healing.
Hands-on course will cover:
• Flap design and mobilization• Development of visual-spatial skills• Control of flap tension and wound closure• Suturing techniques – training of hand precision and bi-manual coordination• Keyhole surgical techniques for periodontal/peri-implant regenerative surgery

GLOBAL OSTEOLOGY COMMUNITY PLATFORM
ABOUT THE BOXIt is a big challenge to link scientists and practitioners in a continuously growing global context and also a fundamental part of the Osteology Foundation’s mission: promoting research and education in oral tissue regeneration worldwide.
With this in mind, the Osteology Foundation has set up the novel Global Osteology Community Platform THE BOX, which on the one hand provides information and tools, but on the other also connects scientists and practitioners worldwide and supports all existing activities of the Osteology Foundation online. THE BOX is the Global Osteology Community Platform - the one place to go for all researchers and practitioners in regenerative dentistry. The Box offers a broad range of information and tools for science and practice, and easy access to all educational and research activities of the Osteology Foundation.
Registered users of THE BOX can submit applications for grants and scholarships, join groups of researchers and practitioners, and establish networks to link with colleagues from all over the world. Everything can be easily accessed and sorted through the customizable My Box cockpit – and registration and usage are free of charge!
We are constantly developing THE BOX, working on new tools and content. So please, come back regularly to see what’s new - a lot of exciting things are in preparation!

OSTEOLOGY FOUNDATION
The Osteology Foundation is a non-profit organisation, formed as an international, independent science-based forum to promote research in oral tissue regeneration and ensure that knowledge gained from research is translated into everyday clinical practice.
The Osteology Foundation is a global organisation that supports science, research training, and education in the field of bone and soft-tissue tissue regeneration. The objective is to develop and share knowledge and understanding, leading to evidence-based clinical practice for the improvement of patient care.
True to its motto “Linking Science with Practice in Regeneration” the Osteology Foundation bridges the gap between scientific advancement and contemporary clinical practice, in the field of oral tissue regeneration.
The independent foundation was established by Dr. Peter Geistlich and Geistlich Pharma AG in 2003. It is steered by a Foundation Board, comprising internationally renowned experts, that oversees all projects and activities.
In the recent years, the International Osteology Symposia have become established as one of the most important series of congress on the topic of oral tissue regeneration. Their success is based on top level science, first class speakers, extensive practice-oriented training and an exceptional congress atmosphere. The National Osteology Symposia are staged worldwide in various countries. With an attractive mix of scientific presentations and practical workshops, the National Osteology Symposia off an excellent platform for hih-level training, education and exchange between national and international experts.
