This clinically oriented lecture has the purpose of discussing a promising trend in treating the increased vertical dimension by using skeletal anchorage. The goals of such treatment modalities, as well as the prognosis and the stability are dependent on the aetiology and the skeletal age of the patient. How to choose the correct treatment strategy build up on these two factors will be illustrated. A better way of predicting the prognosis, retention and stability will be explained. Facts about growth mechanisms and their clinical relevance to the open bite correction will be mentioned. The material is exclusively from our clinics.

Hypodontia is often associated with other dental and skeletal anomalies and can be part of a syndrome. This presentation looks at the dilemmas involved in the diagnosis and management of hypodontia and examines cases that have been followed up long-term. The results are orthopaedic by advancing the maxillary complex forward and developing the midfacial region. It is more like maxillary growth stimulation correcting the skeletal discrepancy in all planes, as well as creating space in the dental arch. It involves dental decompensation and obvious improvement of the facial harmony. Facts about growth mechanisms and most importantly their clinical relevance will be mentioned. Clinical Management of Complex Anterior Open Bite: How to Succeed in Treating Open Bite?

Open bite is one of the hardest malocclusions to treat orthodontically. The combination of skeletal, dental, and functional factors contributes powerfully to its establishment and aggravation. The key to orthodontic treatment of open bite starts with an accurate diagnosis of the discrepancy. Treatment can start at early ages with an interceptive phase that can help preventing maxillofacial surgery, which has been considered for a long time the most effective treatment in adults. However, due to its many limitations and the arise of new technologies, such as mini-implants, orthodontic treatment of moderate to severe open bite has nowadays proven itself as a pragmatic alternative to surgery. The following presentation will discuss the comprehensive and synergic treatment factors of dental and skeletal open bite in adults through correlated case reports and will highlight the application of mini-implants and discuss its long-term stability.


1. A good diagnosis is key to success in treating open bite malocclusions

2. A synergic approach targeting alveolar, dental and muscular factors is the most efficient in the correction of open bite malocclusion

3. Posterior alveolar intrusion of the maxilla through TADs are an effective and stable way to close the open bite and induce a counter-clockwise rotation of the mandible

4. Facial aesthetics In Class II open bite cases, can be enhanced without surgery due to an increase in the projection of the chin and the improved lip competency

5. Long term stability is more affected by the accurate correction of the neuro-muscular balance of the tongue than any other therapeutical factor

Multidisciplinary Team Management in Cleft Lip and Palate Patients

The principal role of the multidisciplinary team in orofacial cleft patients is to provide integrated case management to assure quality and continuity of patient care and longitudinal follow- up. Each patient seen by the team requires comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment planning to achieve maximum habilitation with efficient use of parent and patient time and resources. Infant feeding must be addressed; later speech must be dealt with in a timely manner, seeking every opportunity to enhance the development of normal speech. Another major concern is esthetics; significant goals of the team include maximizing esthetic results and also facilitating the development of the orofacial complex.


1. To explore the prevalence of Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts

2. Increase the knowledge about the aetiology of Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts (NSOFC) including cleft lip with/or without cleft palate (CL+P) and isolated cleft palate (CP) are complex. A combination of risk factors contributes to its aetiology; genetics, environmental and gene-environmental interaction

3. Develop the skills of treating cleft patients with orofacial clefts at any or all four different stages: Neonatal maxillary orthopedics, orthodontic treatment during the deciduous dentition, mixed dentition, and permanent dentition

4. Know the rule of orthodontist in the multidisciplinary team

Missing or Trauma to Upper Incisors – An Inter-disciplinary Management

Trauma to upper incisors is a common occurrence especially with Class II Division 1 Malocclusion. These are cases involving trauma of anterior teeth, missing teeth, crown-length discrepancies, tooth size discrepancies, mid-line problems, bone loss, uneven gingival levels, lack of bone for implants and numerous other dental problems that present a serious aesthetic challenge for the restorative dentist. Yet this is where an interdisciplinary management may have its greatest effect.

Orthodontic Materials and their Antimicrobial Ability for the Prevention of White Spot Lesions

Orthodontic brackets during their wear cause demineralization of enamel, which is the initial step in caries development. The prevention of such spots is crucial to ensure healthy teeth, but patients’ compliance is not the most optimal way. Materials containing selenium carried most significance when comparing microorganisms with agent, since they were the only ones showing difference between the two microorganisms. They showed statistically significant difference in efficacy against S. mutans, and poor antimicrobial effect against L. acidophilus. The data do suggest that orthodontic materials containing selenium, might prevent WSLs due to effectiveness against S. mutans.


1. Characterize the antimicrobial properties of orthodontic materials containing potential antimicrobial agents (selenium, fluoride, or no agent) and compare

2. Evaluate antimicrobial effect of orthodontic materials after plate incubations as the diameter of the growth inhibition (bacteriostatic or bactericidal) zone around each disk

3. Implement the effectiveness of selenium materials and fluoride materials on growth of cariogenic S. mutans and L. acidophilus in vitro and therefore translate the results into practice in preventing demineralization of the enamel surrounding orthodontic brackets

4. Confirm previous studies results in order to be able to replicate the trial with larger samples

5. Find the most optimal treatment option to prevent the generation of WSLs

The digital orthodontic clinic is a clinic that can conquer have all the tools and armamentarium for serving the orthodontic patient differently. Creating Symmetry in the Asymmetric Face: The Orthodontic/Surgical Interface

Developments of modern imaging and planning techniques coupled with modified surgical techniques has improved our ability to diagnose and treat this challenging group of patients. The emphasis of this presentation will focus on the assessment and management principles fundamental to correcting facial asymmetry with a goal to achieve optimal facial and dental aesthetics as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
