STATEMENT OF PURPOSES

The purposes of the Ormond Amateur Football Club Incorporated are: 1. As a member of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (and/or any successor

association/league), to encourage, promote, foster and develop participation in Australian Rules football, particularly in Ormond and the surrounding region.

2. To work with and support the Ormond Junior Football Club Incorporated (OJFC) in its Auskick and junior football (Under 9-17) endeavours, and to provide a pathway for OJFC players into senior football.

3. Together with the OJFC, to generate a club and community environment (including the provision of suitable amenities and facilities) in which members, supporters and residents can freely participate and which supports a sense of belonging for all those involved.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT I am pleased to provide my third annual report as President of the Ormond Amateur Football Club. I regard 2016 as a somewhat disappointing season, as the Club was unable to consolidate itself in Premier C, despite the continued growth and development of the playing group and advances made off field. Having said that, the performance of the Under 19’s to not only make the Section 3 Grand Final from fourth position but to then go down to Collegians by only five points after extra time, was meritorious and heroic. The Reserves had a mixed season. After jumping out of the blocks early and then enduring a winless mid-season period, the Ressies fell into the Four and tried valiantly in their 1st semi-final loss to Williamstown CYMS. The Third XVIII had their best season for some time finishing mid-table. The Third XVIII players should feel justifiably pleased that they were able to send-off ‘Georgie’ with a win in the final round of the season, after he announced his retirement following six consecutive coaching stints with the Thirds/ Club 18 teams. I thank the 2016 coaching panel for teaching, challenging and motivating our players. There were three new faces added to the 2015 panel. Andrew Kahofer (Reserves Coach), Rob Putamorsi (Senior Asst Coach) and Alan Curtis (Reserves Asst Coach) joined Ashleigh Lever (Senior Coach), Mark Cooke (Senior Asst Coach), Michael Oaten (U19s Coach), Paul Milner, David Robertson, Tim Oaten and Henry Robertson (U19 Asst Coaches), and Paul Konstanty (Third XVIII Coach). Thank you to the Runners for each team: Ravi Presser (Seniors), Greg Hammond (Reserves, and Asst Coach), and Andrew Jewell (U19s). Oats and Georgie have not sought reappointment for season 2017. Both have enjoyed extended periods ‘marshalling the troops’, and on behalf of all players and supporters I sincerely thank them both for their involvement and extended period of commitment to the Club. I was thrilled that Mark Cooke has accepted the Committee’s invitation to become the Under 19 Coach, and was equally pleased that Richard Abell has been appointed as the Third XVIII Coach. Some other new faces already enlisted onto the 2017 coaching panel in support roles, include Mal Michael (Seniors), Wayne Cove and Sam Blandford (Reserves), and Russell Barnes into a new player development role. These, and other appointments, continue the Committee’s commitment to build all areas of the Club, particularly the coaching personnel and resources, to ensure that the playing group is provided with every opportunity to reach (and exceed) its optimum playing potential.

Resources were again channeled into player culture and education to assist the Club to develop strong on-field leaders and to instill a strong culture of self-assessment and high achievement amongst the players. Congratulations to Club Captain, Boyd Upstill, and the Senior leadership group, and the first-time captains of the other three teams - Daniel Frazier (Reserves), Jason McDonald (Third XVIII) and dual Under 19 captains, Eddie Quinn and Nick Oaten.

Again, I was fortunate to have a fantastic Executive and General Committee this season, with a good balance between members who are players and those who are non-players. I thank Stephen Manning, the Club’s very able Secretary; Greg Scanlan as Treasurer who managed the Club’s financial affairs excellently; Greg Holman was again outstanding as coordinator of football operations; Tim Ashford, as sponsorship manager, again looked for every opportunity to grow sponsorship revenue; Greg Hammond led the planning for social functions and oversaw player education and awareness initiatives; Leo Dalton our tireless Club photographer and website manager; Damien Cleary once again managed player registrations and the player database, and conducted weekly raffles; newcomer, Robyn Mason, did an outstanding job as canteen manager, and Gary Murray, Paul Konstanty, Liam Adlington, and second newcomer, Sally Difford, all contributed in important ways to the effective management of the Club in 2016. Greg Hammond, Greg Scanlan and Leo Dalton will not be seeking re-election in 2017 - I thank each for their respective significant contributions to the workings of the Committee in past seasons, and look forward to their continued involvement with the Club. Match day support continued to improve for the players and coaches this season under the leadership of Greg Holman. Greg was superb in coordinating the medical and training staff, including Craig Dungey and other staff from Ormond Physiotherapy, and the trainers. I thank Ainslie Morris for stepping up to coordinate the trainers’ roster in Greg’s absence mid-season. The purchase of 10 player tracker units this season enabled new performance monitoring information about the players to be utilised by coaches and players, respectively. Several volunteers played their part in ensuring that the OAFC was able to operate as smoothly and effectively as possible. What a team of unsung heroes, each and every one of you …….. Gary Murray once again looked after all team management duties for both the Seniors and the Reserves, and Tim Harkin did an outstanding job managing the Under19’s. Reine Anrep provided valuable support looking after gear and merchandise as well as regularly fulfilling the role of Reserves goal umpire, David Symes assisted with minor pavilion repairs, Colin Geldart regularly helped in the Bar, and Geoff Woodford was our regular timekeeper and scoreboard operator. Other match day volunteers included Sally Difford in various roles, Frank Stringer undertaking interchange steward duties, Mick Cahalane recording match statistics, Lisa & Luke Lever for preparing after-match salad rolls for the Seniors each week, Mark Fine and Steve Aarons as the Club’s Reserves/ Third XVIII field umpires, Wasif Kahn and Rob Konstanty as the Reserves and Third XVIII boundary umpires respectively, and Geoff Linsing our ‘quiet and no fuss’ change room cleaner.

Some well-deserved milestones and awards were a feature this season, beginning with Ray Wood who was acknowledged by the VAFA for services to amateur football by being presented with a VAFA Certificate of Merit in March this year. Luke Gogis, James Landman and Jesse Maxfield were rewarded for their outstanding early season form when selected in the VAFA Under 19 rep team that played an AFL Vic Country U19 team. Luke was named Vice-Captain, a worthy honour for an outstanding player. Jack Short was voted best afield by the umpires in the U19 Grand Final. Sincere congratulations to good mates, Greg Hammond and Tim Ashford, for being awarded Life Memberships this year – both have been outstanding on-field and off-field contributors to the Club over many years, and are worthy recipients. Finally, it was certainly the season of playing milestones: 250 games – Matthew Martinov (below left); 200 games – Tim Naylor (below middle), Wayne Cove (below right); 150 games – Ryan Martin, Daniel Frazier, David Machin, Troy Harvey, Daniel Haysom; 100 games – Chris Coghlan, Matthew Oaten, Jak Wardley (below right), Lloyd Anrep, Jason McDonald, Alistair McCooke, and to top it off, Max Gawn, became the Club’s first All-Australian AFL player.

Players and supporters were catered for very well this season by a large team of volunteers …… Gary Murray regularly assumed BBQ duties, David Symes assisted me to coordinate four OAFC Luncheons, and Pamela Simon coordinated a large group of parents on Thursday nights to prepare the players’ and coaches’ meals. Pamela was rightfully recognised as the 2016 Club Person of the Year when presented with the Neil Le Page Memorial Trophy at the Club’s Presentation evening, not only for her Thursday meal organisation but also for assisting Greg Hammond, Liam Adlington and Dave Machin on the social committee, and carrying out other tasks. Special mention to Shane and Cheryl Metz for preparing the ‘stand out’ social event and luncheon posters, Marg Putz who donated gift packs for raffle prizes at each luncheon, and all who assisted Robyn & Geoff Mason in the canteen at some stage during the season, including Deb McCooke, Fran Harkin, Jennifer Atkins, Nicole Putamorsi, Catrina Houghton, Sally Difford, Petrina Halsall, Jane Fitzpatrick (McCambley,), Caroline Robertshaw, Pam Oaten, Rochelle Shnider, Tracy Ashton, Greg Holman and Sandra Always, and particular thanks to Remi and Sarsha Haby who regularly assisted when the Under19’s played at home.

A couple of special events were organised and presented this season: the ANZAC Day tribute, the Ormond Ball and Ladies & Grandparents Lunch. Big thanks to Barry Lacy, John Decker and Ray Wood who coordinated the very successful ANZAC Day Luncheon and on-ground ceremony, and Ron Jenkins who once again generously donated the delicious ‘Luv-a-Duck’ luncheon. The Ormond Ball returned to the calendar this season and attracted 140 people, including many wives, partners, and girlfriends. It was a fantastic evening – big thanks to the social committee for their organisation, and to Tim Ashford for coordinating the silent auction. The Ladies & Grandparents Lunch in May was a popular function, and was highlighted by the opportunity provided to many mums and grandmas to visit their son/grandson in the ‘inner sanctum’ of the players change rooms. Other happenings during 2016 which are worthy of mention include: the engagement with local residents prior to the commencement of the season (5,000 leaflets letterboxed inviting residents to support the Club) that resulted in four new Community Memberships and a couple of new faces at home games; seeing past Club stalwarts, Luke O’Brien and Anthony Grace pull on the brown ‘n blue jumper for a few matches; ‘Bomber’ Murray being invited to join the Governor of Victoria for Morning Tea at Government House in recognition for his volunteer services to community football (see below right); the appointment of Alistair McCooke as the representative for all Ormond players on the newly formed VAFA Players Association; the generous donation of a new photocopier to the Club by Tim Ashford (and Konica Minolta), the establishment of the Geoff Reilley Cup by the Ormond AFC and Caulfield Grammarians FC to acknowledge Geoff’s outstanding service to both clubs (see below left), and which will be retained by the winner of all future matches between the two clubs; the whole Ormond community following and supporting Jane Barnes in her challenge to beat leukemia; successfully dealing with all issues and inconveniences that confronted the Club this season from the North Road railway works; and the establishment of the pavilion upgrade sub-committee and women’s team sub-committee to advance new initiatives in these areas. Over the next four months much work will be done to establish the Club’s first women’s football team, with the aim of fielding a team in the inaugural season of the VAFA’s Women’s Football Competition.

An incredibly important group within the Ormond Amateur Football Club community is the Club sponsors, and Tim Ashford has again done an outstanding job servicing them all. We all rely heavily on their support, and this season we had approximately 55 financial and in-kind sponsors, and player sponsors. The Club’s principle sponsor was again Buxton Bentleigh. Major sponsorship was generously provided by the McKinnon Hotel, BMW

South Yarra, Layton Press, Tobin Brothers, David Scott Consulting and Ormond Physiotherapy. Thank you to these sponsors and to the many other organisations, that supported the Club this season - I hope you will be back next season! Our partnership with the Ormond Junior Football Club was again one of mutual benefit. The two clubs continue to support each other in a variety of ways, and I particularly thank outgoing President, Michael Urban, and Secretary, Lyndon Loader. Two examples of the strong partnership between both clubs stand out for me: senior players, Will Robertshaw and Jonty Sharman-Smith, co-coached one of the U16 teams; and secondly, there would have been more than 15 senior club players and members in attendance to support the junior club’s U17 team in this season’s Division Grand Final (which they unfortunately lost). The pathway for players between junior and senior is as strong as ever, and continuing to foster and grow the relationship with the OJFC remains a key priority for the OAFC Committee. Similarly, the OAFC continues to have an excellent relationship with seasonal co-tenant, the Ormond Cricket Club, highlighted by the joint venture initiative to replace the old chairs in the social room with 120 new chairs, and the regular attendance of cricket club players and members at our President’s Lunches. To all players, committee, officials, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters – a collective increase in endeavor, commitment and support for the Club is required in season 2017 to ensure success. I look forward to a top two finish for the Senior team in season 2017 to ensure that the Club can return to Premier C. In closing, I wish all involved with our great Club a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year period, and look forward to seeing everyone back in the fold on 8 April for Round 1. Richard Simon President

FOOTBALL OPERATIONS REPORT

We had high hopes of success in 2016 at the start of the year with a record number of players registered for our 4 sides including new recruits and players returning after an absence. Unfortunately our Seniors lacked the consistency within games and from week to week to win enough games to maintain our position in C Grade. We finished the year with 5 wins and 13 losses to finish bottom of the ladder, which means we will be relegated to Division 1 for 2017. I know everyone connected with the Club and the Senior list will be fighting extremely hard, starting with pre-season training in November, to ensure we are competing at the end of the year for one of the top two spots. The Reserves after a very strong start to the season had a lean patch in the middle and fought hard to finish in 4th spot. They were beaten in the first semi final. The Under 19’s had a consistent year to finish 4th. The team played some of their best football for the year in the finals and made it to the Grand Final. They were beaten in extra time by 5 points after looking the winners with a couple of minutes to go in normal time. The Third XVIII had a good year and finished in 6th spot.

We played a record number of Senior debutants this year (18). Some were from our Junior teams (U/16’s & U/17’s] while the majority were from our Under 19’s. We need to retain these players and recruit others to cover positions that have been identified as needing support. I thank the coaching panel including the assistants for the time and effort they contributed during the year. I would like to acknowledge both Michael Oaten and Paul Konstanty who decided not to seek reappointment to their respective roles of Under 19’s coach and Third XVIII coach in 2017. They have contributed greatly to the development of both the Club and the football sides over a number of years

Team Managers: Gary Murray (Seniors and Reserves), Tim Harkin (Under 19’s) and a number of committee people for the Third XVIII team supported both the coaches and players on game day ensuring they had everything required to perform at their best while also ensuring we met our VAFA requirements. Physiotherapists: We were again very well supported by Ormond Physiotherapy. Craig and his team were kept very busy both at games and during the week dealing with injuries and implementing rehabilitation programs to ensure players received the best possible treatment. Trainers: Ainslie, Tim, Kieran, Gabby, Alisha, Cheryise and Malcolm did a wonderful job in preparing players for games and ensuring they had the correct treatment post game and during the week. We are very fortunate to have such a committed and talented group of trainers. I would also like to acknowledge the role Ainslie played in coordinating this group. Game Day support: Thank you to all the volunteer supporters, players and committee who assisted the team managers in filling important game day duties. Without your wonderful support we could not meet our requirements of the VAFA. We now look forward to next season and the challenges of performing to the level that will enable us to gain promotion to Premier C once again. I believe with the group of players we have from this year and those who we will encourage to join us in 2017 we will be well placed to achieve our goal. Greg Holman Vice President - Football Operations

THIRD XVIII REPORT The Third XVIII had a mixed season this year. While it is fair to say that we had our chances to make finals, it was also great to have a competitive team that could be vying for a spot in the finals in the first place. This was due in great measure to an increase in training numbers for the Third XVIII this season. This was particularly pleasing, especially given the difficulties caused by the railway corridor construction project. Where we were often reduced to training in a 40 metre square in the pocket. Special mention for these efforts go to core group of stalwart players: Captain Jase MacDonald, veteran Damien Cleary, B&F 3rd placegetter Evan Atkins, along with new players Jake Heath, Matt Zaccaria and The Axe, and a number of other players who were also regular trainers. Also requiring special mention is the way the players fought the season out. With some great second half efforts, most probably due to the re-introduction of the ‘Gut-Circuit’. I’d also like to congratulate team stalwart, Leon Calvert, on winning the Third XVIII B&F. Leon played in our first game in 2008, and has contributed a great deal to the team and Club ever since. And I’d also like to congratulate B&F runners-up, Matt Hirschman, who has only just come up from the Junior Club - well done, Matt. I think we may have built the base for a big year in 2017. Once again, I’d like to thank the Committee for allowing me to continue in this role. And I’d also like to thank, on behalf of the players, the many people who helped off-field, without whom, we would not have a game of football to participate in. With special mention to Damien Cleary, who keeps the team functioning with all his registration/ clerical work, as well as performing many other duties. Paul Konstanty Third XVIII Coach

UNDER 19 REPORT

So close, yet so far, the season ended in a heartbreaking 5 point loss in extra time in the Grand Final against Collegians after scores were tied at full time. Whilst disappointing to lose, the result should not overshadow the season the players put together which resulted in a Grand Final berth after finishing in fourth position. Memorable and exciting close victories in a Semi-Final over Mazenod and a nail biting Preliminary Final victory over Williamstown CYMS (see picture next page), served to showcase the players desire to compete and never give up. Their effort and attitude when challenged was to be admired and should serve the Club well going forward. A total of 39 Under 19 players represented the Club in 2016 with a number of players making contributions at Senior level throughout the season. In addition, players from the U/17's were able to contribute at different stages where possible. Depth, training standards and attendance were excellent, and competition for spots in our best team was healthy. A number of players were also able to play in our Third XVIII team, which ensured all available players were not missing out on football.

The leadership group made a worthwhile contribution to our season and were well led by co-captains Eddie Quinn and Nick Oaten. Off field support was strong and Tim Harkin did an outstanding job as team manager, was well organised and structured with assistance from the Club committee and parental support for match day roles. Medical/trainer services were well provided on a roster basis. Match day assistance from Paul Milner, David Robertson, Andrew Jewell, Tim Oaten and Henry Robertson was much appreciated. I have been fortunate to have and enjoy their contributions for much of my coaching career and will always value their commitment and wise counsel over the years. Thank you! Congratulations to Best and Fairest winners, Jesse Maxfield (1st), Nick Oaten (2nd) and Matt Perry (3rd), and to all players for their commitment and effort in 2016. I look forward to watching all players develop further their football at Ormond in the future and wish them and the Club all the best in 2017 and beyond. Michael Oaten Under 19 Coach

Pamela Simon was a worthy recipient of the 2016 Club Person of the Year award. It recognised her ‘behind-the-scenes’ contributions to the Club this season and the previous two seasons. Roles have included coordinating the roster of helpers to prepare and serve the players’ Thursday night meals (as well as being one of the kitchen hands for a majority of these evenings), assisting with major club functions (including the Ormond Ball this season and the Celebration of an Era in 2015), updating the match details on the Club’s website each round, providing the floral table centre-pieces for each President’s Lunch, occasionally laundering the clash jumpers, and generally assisting Richard and other volunteers in various tasks around the Club. Congratulations Pamela from everyone at Ormond.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The 2016 season was mixture of lost opportunities, some success and disappointments. Congratulations to Michael Oaten and his coaching team and the Under 19 playing group for their outstanding season and an extraordinary finals series. With a little bit of luck, the Club could have been celebrating a premiership. To Ash Lever, Mark Cooke and Rob Putamorsi - thank you for your contribution, while it was a disappointing end to the season the plans for a successful 2017 are already taking shape. The Reserves had a great season culminating in a 1st Semi-Final appearance. Congratulations to Andrew Kahofer, Alan Curtis, Greg Hammond and the playing group for their significant contribution to the Club during 2016. Richard Simon completed another successful year as President. He continues to meet every challenge with energy and innovation. The role of President continues to be more and more demanding and his collaborative approach brings all stakeholders together to move the Club forward.

All committee meetings were well attended with the required quorum of members at each meeting. A note of thanks is extended to all members of the 2016 committee for their contribution to the Club. I would like to thank Damien Cleary for his outstanding contribution and in particular for his work as Assistant Secretary and Registration Secretary. The role of Secretary was far easier due to Damien’s outstanding work in 2016. The Glen Eira City Council provided great support and I would like to thank Belinda Griffiths and Linda Smith for their assistance during 2016. The OAFC will continue to work in partnership with the Council to provide the community with the opportunity to engage in football activities. The VAFA Executive was very supportive with CEO, Michael Sholly providing guidance in regard to football and club operational issues. The Club also acknowledges the significant contribution of Brian Goodman in his role as VAFA General Football Manager & Umpire Operation, and Sam Confait in his role as Football Operations Manager. The Club is very fortunate to have the support of so many volunteers that contribute many hours each week to enable the Club to function effectively. Thank you to Bruce Ritchie, Jarred Harry and David Symes for their assistance with maintenance at the pavilion, and a special thanks to all volunteers and sponsors that were part of the Club in 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contribution to the Club by the retiring Under 19 coach, Michael Oaten. Michael kicked off his coaching involvement with the Club in 2004, and has been actively involved almost continuously up to the end of the 2016 season. In 2005, Michael coached the Under 19 team to a premiership, with many players from that premiership team going on to play Senior football at the Club. On behalf of everyone involved at the Club, thank you for making a great Club greater. Stephen Manning Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT It was always going to be an interesting season for the Club in 2016 with the railway corridor excavation works commencing and the resultant disruptions to training and match day activities of the Club. A lot of planning went into making sure any impact was minimised, with major considerations being the continuation of on-field success, particularly at home games, and continuing the off field success from previous seasons. I know that Richard Simon, Stephen Manning and Greg Holman had some difficult decisions and a lot of planning changes to ensure the best opportunities were presented for the 2016 season. Greg Hammond, Liam Adlington and Pamela Simon again worked hard to organise functions, which are important funddraisers for the Club. The Ormond Ball was well patronised and generated important revenue for the Club, and from all accounts everyone that attended had a terrific night. The Club’s Major Raffle was undertaken for the second time this season, with the ‘winner take all’ approach again proving successful and netting the Club $3,645 towards overall running costs. Thank you to all who purchased and sold tickets, and we look forward to continuing the success of this fundraiser next season. Sponsorship was again headed up by Tim Ashford, with another successful year providing $39,050.00 in direct cash sponsorship, which is a fantastic effort and is a major reason why the Committee can continue to provide valuable on-field support to the players. An example of this support was the purchase of new equipment for football operations, including the ten GPS sports tracker units which enable the coaches and players to measure on-field performance and output. Thank you to all our sponsors, and we look forward to your continuing support in season 2017. Between Damien Cleary and Greg Holman, the 200 Club was again a very successful fundraiser, with a number of jackpots on offer during the season and providing much interest on Thursday evenings for those who participated. David Scott also provided generous financial support this season. I would like to take this opportunity to personally pass on my thanks to David, your support of the Club is tremendous. Bar sales are major revenue for the Club. Richard Simon puts in an incredible effort to make sure this operates to optimum levels throughout the season, and he was ably assisted by Colin Geldart, Frank Stringer, Stephen Manning and Liam Adlington each Thursday evening and during home game functions. Robyn Mason took on the job of operating the canteen for season 2016, and in a difficult year of operation still managed to keep the canteen working to capacity and provided a net return of over $10,000. A big thank you for all your efforts, Robyn. Trading revenue remained strong again this season and tracked close to expectations. Costs were generally down from previous seasons, and I am pleased to report that a moderate surplus is being reported for 2016. Greg Scanlan Treasurer
