History

• Idea from Nikola Tesla in late 19th Century

• Always huge radio interference problems

• Philips solved the problems in 1992

• Price has traditionally been too high

• Limited range of luminaires

• Victory has addressed both these issues

How It Works

• They work like Fluorescent

tubes without Electrodes.

• Magnetic field is produced

by two transformer coils

• This creates an electric

field in the glass tube

• Electric field creates a discharge in the tube which radiates light

• Works like a transformer – coils are primary, lamp is secondary

Technology

Advantages Disadvantages

• Long Life – 80,000 hours

• Sealed for life fittings

• High quality white light –

just like triphosphor fluorescent

• Instant start & re-strike

• Flicker-free high frequency gear

• Low operating temperature

• High initial cost

• Electromagnetic interference

• Difficult to design luminaires

VICTORY SYSTEM IS THE

FIRST TO OVERCOME

ALL OF THESE ISSUES!

Philips “QL”

• Bulb shape is like an over-sized GLS lamp

• This gives poor optical control

• Special heat-sinks needed

• Hot lamp = lower efficacy

• Extremely expensive lamp

• Few luminaires available

Osram “Endura”

• Strange rectangular bulb shape

• Extremely specialised optics are needed

• Few luminaires available

• Tubular design like fluorescent = high efficacy

• Extremely expensive lamp

GE “Genura”

• Reflector shaped lamp

• Integrated ballast and screw base

• Designed as GLS retrofit

• Designed to fail after only 15,000 hours

• Short life makes it a less attractive lamp

Panasonic

• GLS shaped and sized lamp

• 100W GLS retrofit, 12W consumption

• Integrated ballast

• 30,000 hour life

• Very expensive lamp only sold in Japan

Tungda (China)

• Chinese copy of the Philips QL lamp

• Quality of the ballast not so good

• Rapid lumen depreciation

• Lamp efficacy 20% less

• Low cost makes it interesting

• But concerns over quality
