• An entity of state established in 1974.

• Operates within prescribed legislation and national government frameworks and mandates - including PFMA and Water Services Act.

• The Minister of Water and Sanitation is the Executive Authority.

• The Board, appointed by the minister, is accountable for the leadership and control of Umgeni Water

• The Executive Committee is the top management structure of Umgeni Water.

• The Chief Executive guides the day-to-day activities of the entity with powers delegated to him by the Board

Geographical Area and Customers

KwaZulu-Natal has a total

geographical area of 94 359 km2 and

is home to 11.1 million people and 2.9

million households.

A total of 54 municipalities comprising

1 Metro, 10 DMs and 43 LMs. There

are 14 are Water Services Authorities

Current supply area of focus covers approximately 41 700 km2.

There are Bulk Supply Contracts with Seven (7) WSAs:• eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality• iLembe District Municipality• Ugu District Municipality • Harry Gwala District Municipality• uMgungundlovu District Municipality• Msunduzi Local Municipality.

Focus area is home to 7.4 million people (2.1 million households)

Umgeni Water’s infrastructure assets in support of its bulk water

services business comprise:

o Approximately nine hundred and fifty five (955) kilometres of

pipelines and fifty three (53) kilometres of tunnels,

o Fifteen (15) impoundments,

o Twenty (20) water treatment works, and

o Nine (9) wastewater treatment works.

o Core Business: Umgeni Water provides Bulk Potable Water and Bulk Wastewater Treatment Services to Water Services Authorities in response to local and regional needs. o 435 million cubic metres of potable water per annum (1191 Ml/d) is supplied

to customers (2018)o 32 million cubic metres of wastewater is treated per annum (87 Ml/d) (2018)

Umgeni Water Strategic statement: We will lead the process of

providing solutions via an innovative, vigorous growth path, to

increase sustainable water supply in order to satisfy the

developmental water services requirements in our region, which

reconcile water demand and water resources, plan infrastructure,
