Organization Name

ur annual Board of Directors election was recently completed in October and I want to

give a hearty welcome to our newly elected Board Members serving three year terms commencing January 1, 2017: Lorna Interian, Kevin Leach and Braden Turnbull. Each of the new Directors brings with them a diverse background and expertise to complement the existing Board. We were fortu-nate to have five excellent candidates on the ballot this year and I would like to thank the two candidates that were not elected for their willing-ness to support the Club’s Governance.

As is our custom, the Board elects a President for the next year at its regular October meeting, and Jack Whalen was elected Club President for 2017. It has been a pleasure to serve with Jack for the past two years and am confident that he will provide solid leadership throughout the year. The remainder of the Club Officers (Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) will be elected at the next Board meeting in November. Jack and next year’s Board Chairs will then begin the process of staffing the various standing committees by soliciting volunteers from the membership. You will be receiving communication regarding this from Kelly Stortz and I would encourage you to volunteer your time and expertise for the benefit of PVGC – as you have always done in the past.

We recently completed the annual Bud Oakley tournament in October. Sid Croft, who personally knew Bud Oakley, paid a heartfelt tribute at the tournament kick-off dinner to Bud’s generosity and lasting legacy to our club. Having organized the tourna-ment a few years ago as part of the golf committee, I learned a lot about this gentlemen and his enormous contribution to our club. He assigned his lease for the club to the members of PVGC and is definitely worthy of being honored by an annual tribute tourna-ment.

I am writing this message prior to the Annual Business meeting scheduled for November 2nd since I will be travelling. Ed Whittemore, our Vice President will be chairing the meeting, which will focus on the survey results, and I will provide details in next month’s Barranca.

As we take time off from our busy lives to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, I would like to express my gratitude for the diligent work of our management, staff and volunteer members. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family – I hope it is special!

The holiday season is upon us and we hope you will allow your club to be an important venue for your season’s celebrations! The 2016 Holiday Season Booklet with all dining and entertainment events was recently distributed. We encourage you to make your reservations early for the Citrus Singers on Monday, December 5th. They are nothing short of……incredible! For the children (or the child in all of us! Plan on joining us for the Santa’s Brunch on the 11th. Should there be anything that we can do to make your holiday season more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to ask. I would also like to explain the request for the Holiday Gift from the membership to the staff. This gift is divided amongst the staff based on a formula that includes their compensation year to date and for every year of service. Most importantly, it includes those team members who serve the membership behind the scenes (senior staff members do not participate in this program). Thank you in advance for your participation. The Membership Referral Program is working well. As you have heard me mention, the absolute best source for new members at our club is YOU, the current member. If you know someone that would make a great addition to our club, please contact Donna Myers, Kelly Stortz or me. We will be delighted to host a round for you and your friend if they are interested in membership. And remember the incentive of $1,000 credited to your club bill when they join. Since the inception of this program in July 2014, we have had over 38 new members join the club due to current member referrals! The 2016 PVGC Member Survey results are in from Global Golf Advisors, and we were able to share initial feedback at the Annual Business Meeting of Regular Members on November 2nd. The complete report is available for your review on the club’s website. Based on your feedback and requests, we are currently prioritizing our efforts and setting goals for staff and management to enhance and improve our member’s club experience. As we continue to set service goals for the coming year, the club will be offering comment cards and sending occasional dining surveys to members. Also, the club is currently developing a Star Performer Program where members are encouraged to nominate a staff member who has exceeded high expectations. Award winners will receive a cash award and recognition. Finally, due to popular request, the entertainment on New Year’s Eve this year will be ringing in 2016 at Midnight! The entire evening will be planned to allow you to celebrate the New Year any way you like; with a quieter evening with friends or a fun night on the dance floor at the stroke of Midnight. Your choice! A Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Palos Verdes Golf Family from the Hockett Family. We all have much to be thankful for!

Fall was in the air for a short time, but it was quickly replaced with summer-like weather. While the temperatures have been in 80’s rain does not appear to be on the horizon. Hopefully our weather pattern will change before the end of the month! On the course, we will be removing more grass in out of play areas to take advantage of dwindling rebate money. California Water Service will be working with us to pay for most of these areas, which include:

Left of forward tee on hole 1;

Right of forward tee, extending to the path on hole 7

4 tee adjacent to the cart path

10 tees to the road

10 rough left, left of path at fairway bunker

16 front of middle tees, which will include a cart path extension.

16 rough along the left side from fairway bunker to oak trees

17 in front of the tees.

With the shorter days upon us, it is a good time to review some common course etiquette:

Greens are in good condition, but we need everyone’s help by repairing ball marks. Please help your fellow members and repair your ball mark and at least one other. If left unrepaired, that bare spot will remain for weeks over the winter.

Divot mix is a must as divots recover slowly this time of year. Remember, enough sand to cover the divot but do not over-fill. If there is soil on your divot, replace it and step on it to insure good soil contact. The compost in the mix will increase the temperature and aid in the recovery.

Pull Cart Users- as we have shorter days and concentrated traffic, please stay off chipping areas, collars, and tees at all times. Respect the signage and ropes.

We rake bunkers every morning. Please rake the sand by using two hands on the rake, push the sand towards the green, and remember to rake your divot.

Revised Handicap Stroke Allocation Following USGA guidelines, PVGC recently completed the process of recalculating our hole-by-hole handicap stroke allocation. It is important to note that the goal of handicap stroke allocation is NOT to rank the holes from “hardest” to “easiest” in terms of the ability to make par. Instead, the goal is to “equalize” the abilities of players at different handicap levels by assigning strokes where they would be most needed by a higher-handicapped player to equal the score on a hole. For example, hole #2 PVGC is a very challenging par 3, yet it is the #15 handicap hole – the 4th highest handicap of all 18 holes. If members were asked to rank each hole on the course in terms of the frequency with which they make a par, it is highly unlikely that #2 would show up 4th on anyone’s list. The data from our members confirms that even our relatively low handicap golfers frequent-ly bogey hole #2. However, the data also indicates that higher handicap golfers also regularly bogey hole #2. If both a lower handicap golfer and a higher handicap golfer are reasonably likely to bogey a hole, then awarding a stroke to the higher handicap golfer isn’t an equalizer – it actually tilts the hole in his or her favor. Following USGA guidelines, we collected over 400 golf cards, approximately half of which were from golfers with relatively lower handicaps, while the other half were from golfers with relatively higher handicaps. Holes were then ranked in order of the “differential” on each hole between the average scores of the lower and higher handicap groups. The larger the gap on any given hole between those average scores, the more likely it is that a person would need an “equalizer” stroke to tie that hole. Using that data as a starting point, the USGA recommends the use of own our course knowledge to set the final stroke allocation. Separately, the SCGA also recently completed its review of PVGC to establish updated rating and slope calculations from the various tees. The new course rating is already in effect and is reflected in GHIN calculations. The new handicap stroke allocation will be reflected in revised scorecards, which will be available before the end of the year.

Megan and Karen were playing their normal late afternoon match when they reached the 18th hole. The match was all square and both players had reached the green in two. Karen’s ball was only three feet from the hole, while Megan’s ball was a good 20 feet away. As Karen went to mark her ball, she accidently moved it in the process of marking. Megan immediately called a penalty on Karen, for moving her ball. Was Megan correct?? Rule 21-1 in the USGA Rules of Golf states, “If a ball or ball marker is accidentally moved in the process of lifting the ball under a Rule or marking its position, the ball or ball marker must be replaced. There is no penalty, provided the move-ment of the ball or ball marker is directly attribut-able to the specific act of marking the position or lifting the ball.” Thus, Megan was incorrect. A bit shaken, she would go on to three putt the hole, while the experienced Karen, stayed calm and knocked her putt in for birdie and the match victory. Megan was a bit disappointed, but she did take some solace in the fact that she had learned a valuable lesson in The Rules of Golf.

The ghosts and goblins did little to scare away our members from the links last month, as we had many great shots and fine rounds by our members in October. We’ll start with some great shots. Mardi Tobias holed out from 50 yards on the 18th hole, employing a technique she learned from Jim in a ladies golf clinic. Patti Estabrook made a great birdie on #16. DJ Lee knocked a 6-iron into the hole for a sweet eagle on #14. Bob Fazio dunked a wedge on #10, for an easy deuce. Lou Henkhaus made her 1st career hole-in-one on #8. Great shot Lou!! We also had some great rounds posted last month. Mafi George shot a smooth 73, in the Ladies October Member Guest. Sandy Sarver made three 2’s on his way to an age busting 83. Whitney Coe shot a career best 42, on the front 9. Rick Higgins tore up the back 9, with a smooth 39. Chris Riegel shot a career best 74. Bob Keller made birdie on #15 and eagle on #16, on his way to an impressive 73. Ron Rau carded his career best score of 75. Pem McGirt shot his lowest round since returning to PVGC, by carding an awesome 76. Bob Fazio also shot “trombones”, with his own sweet 76. The shot of the month goes to Randy Love. While playing in the 1st round of the Bud Oakley Tournament, Randy made a hole in one on the 8th hole. He and his partner Rob Lietzow went on to win the event by three shots, and his ace certainly played a big role in their victory. Nice shot Randy! The round of the month, or I should say rounds of the month, goes to Rick Travers. Rick has been hosting an elite golf event called the Travers Invi-tational, on the island of Kauai, for the last 16 years. The invitational has always attracted a field of talented players from all over the globe. Many say its field is as elite as the Masters. Thus, when Rick finally captured the title this year, it was a win 16 years in the making. Great playing Rick and congratulations on winning such a prestigious event!
