My “takeaway”: We are beginning to build momen- tum in new bookings and there is reason for cauous opmism. While I hesitate to extrapolate any 30-day period, the most recent period shows new bookings approaching $2.2 million on an annualized basis. This is approaching the pace of prior years’ before our catering revenue began to decline. At this me we have secured seven weddings for 2020 with three addional contracts out for signature. Most of you are aware that resurrecng our private party revenues is a primary focus of PVGC’s governance and management. The declining profit contribuon from this seg- ment has been a significant factor in our escalang dues during the last few years. We have addressed this with the complete refurbishment of the banquet space, investments in the kitch- en and adjustments in our event pricing. Now we are focused on building community awareness. While most members would prefer that I write about golf or something else, this is the boring but important stuff that affects our dues. As we reestablish operang profits from the private party segment, we are pivong to address dissasfacon and declining revenue from member dining. Fall holiday events. Springtime specialty brunches. The Fourth of July celebration. What do all of these events have in common? Not just the enormous sentiment of families being together, but they are a homecoming of sorts for some members of the family to recon-nect with each other and with the Club.

On the heels of my second Fourth of July event, I’m struck by the unique atmosphere at the Club of a tradition that includes so many family members across generations. What makes this event unique to me is the participation on the golf course of so many family mem-bers who might not even play golf; it’s this connection to one another and to the Club that is something to celebrate.

An adage in the club industry is for as much of a financial investment as a club membership represents, it’s even more of an emotion-al investment. As I circulate during busier dining times and mingle during specialty holiday events, there are few things that give me more joy than seeing family members who frequented the Club in their formative years, who return to dine or participate in special events with their parents or grandparents, given the Club was such an emotional part of their upbringing.

Seeing the happiness amongst the various families here for the July event — from the younger to the more seasoned, the lower handicappers to the novice players— I am presented with yet another example of what makes PVGC so special. As the holiday season slowly starts to beckon, and throughout the rest of the year, you can look forward to family-oriented events that will add to the already strong sense of place and belonging for the up-and-coming generation. These events will continue to establish a growing, permanent place in their hearts for the Club.

I think everyone can agree that the golf course looks great, so let’s help to keep it that way! We had the luxury of a very wet winter along with the expertise of Pat and his crew, and our Adopt -A-Hole program kind of got lost in the shuffle. We started talking about the program in March of 2018 and after recruiting Captains for all the holes, we launched the program on Sept. 7, 2018, with a recep-tion for all the volunteers. A video starring Chunk McDuff, aka Pat Stack, and our very own Scott Talbot was featured. Let’s get this program up and running as we head into the long, hot, dry days of summer and fall. Remember to fill your divots on the fairways and on the tee boxes, fix your ball marks on the greens, and push the sand towards the center of the bunkers.

Here is the list of Hole Captains along with their respective team members:

PAT STACK, HOLES 1 and 3: Tracy Barrow, Rich Gaugler, Damon Hoover, Ron Honeycutt, Brian Huben, John Marushin, Darin Miller, Dave Olsen & Steve Patterson.

MAURY GENTILE, HOLES 2 and 4: Mark Deseran, Craig Smith and Andre Vuilleumier.

KEVIN LEACH, HOLE 5: Dave Babros, Jeff DeLarme, George Francisco, D J Lee, Phil Rafferty and Mark Woodruff.

TOM MEHLBERG, HOLES 6 and 9: Frank Clark, Rich Davis, Luan and Jay Fogg, Rich Gluckman, Tim Hannemann, Chuck Hunt, Tom Leisy, Chuck Miller, Jon Po, Don Pope, Ray Randall, George Romine, Marty and Toby Tobias and Marty Weekley.

ROB FRONAUER, HOLES 10 and 16: Patty and Pat Estabrook, Ellie Fronauer, Mary and Simon Gilbert, Karen and Chris Hutchison, Nate Hutchison, Linda and Clement Kovar, Karen Mabli, Liz Peabody, Cheryl and Rob Robertshaw and Maryellen and Andre Vuilleumier.

TRACY BARROW, HOLES 8 AND 15: Paul Barrow, Sue and Dave Myers, Anne Rissler and Pat Stack.

ALAN BERGLAND, HOLE 7: Rick Cohan, Scott LeTellier, Stewart Reid, Chris Riegel, Tim Romer, Bruce Short, Michael Sinclair and Dean Thomas.

JAN WEEKLEY, HOLE 11: Setsuko Abe, Pam Foreman, Kathie Gaston, Carol Kim, Nancy Love, Pat Mehlberg, Lauren Nakano, Cheryl Pope, Nancy Roebuck and Nancy Worthen.

DAVE KLEIN, HOLE 12: Dave Baldwin, Tracy Bracken, David Cocke, Dan Finnegan, Gregory Hagerman, Steve Lopes, Greg Sasaki and Timur Tecimer.

LORNA INTERIAN, HOLES 13 and 14: Priscilla and Frank Clark, Joan and Tom Connaghan, George Francisco, Lynne Fujihara, Jan Hauhe, Eve and Rick Higgins, Sallie Krause, Monica and Willy McAllister, Joanne and Mark Moser, Nancy and Al Roebuck, Dee and Sam Roton-di, Scott Sharpe and Dave Wagman.

STEVE VanSICKLEN, HOLE 17: Stan Chang, Karen Mabli, John Marushin, Mark Pfiel, Dave Pracht and Chris Riegel.

STEVE CHANG, HOLE 18: William Cheng, Eric Huang, Issac Huang, Jason Huang, Pao Kuo, Jason Lee, Charlie Lin, Hilo Lin, Major Lin, John Ngan, Sam Sim and Summer Xia.

Let’s get Adopt A Hole in gear and let’s all pitch in. Remember...FILL IT, FIX IT AND RAKE IT! The next evaluation of the holes will be in October. Let’s try and outdo each other. The last evaluation was won by Captain Bergland’s team on Hole 7. Thanks.

The summer of 2019 may go down as one with little sun and cool temperatures. So far, our highs have been cooler than normal, but the humidity has been high. Being raised in the Midwest, Labor Day marked the end of summer. That is certainly not the case in California, as we see some of our warmest weather in September. We could still see some very hot weather, but our trend so far has been more of the mild weather. Around the course:

The fairways are probably in the best condition ever. It is the result from intensified maintenance but also our fairway topdressing program is paying big dividends. You rarely will find mud on the golf ball in the fairways, and they are playing a bit faster.

Later this fall new sand will be installed in the bunkers. There are a few bunkers on the course that have the new sand already installed. The new bunkers are on the left side of 4 green, the front bunker on hole 8, and the practice bunker on 12 closest to 12 forward tees. The new sand is 75% crushed marble and 25% desert tan sand. This sand drains water quicker than the sand presently in the bunkers, so it plays drier.

Also later this fall we will be adding new fairway bunkers on the left side of hole 11 that will hold a ball instead of it rolling left into the hazard. More details will be sent out once we get closer to the work, which is expected to begin in late September or October.

See you on the fairways…

We need your continued support in helping keep bunkers raked, ball marks repaired on greens, and divots filled on fairways. For more info on golf course maintenance activities

RYAN TOCICKI: Ryan and his wife, Kellyann, lived in Redondo Beach before moving to Palos Verdes Estates a year ago. They have three children, Jar age 4; Layla age 3, and Leo age 2. Originally Ryan is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he attended Penn State University and played hockey. He is the Co-Founder/ Vice-President of “Premier Insur-ance Services”, LLC. Welcome to the Club Ryan and your family; we look forward to meeting you.

In the last few months there have not been as many highlights out in the course, but things have heated up lately. We have some great shots and awesome rounds to report about from the last three months. We’ll start with some great rounds. Bruce Berger torched the front nine, with a spectacular 38 in Summer League. Tim Dickins carded a career best 84. Zach Henkhaus carded a sweet 74, in his last round as a family member. Greg Sasaki had three birdies on the back, to shoot a smooth 40. Gary Ervin shot 35 on the back side, thanks to his new TaylorMade M6 driver. Tim Hannemann turned back the clock with a sweet 38. Brian Huben shot 78, with a sweet 35 on the back. Rob Lietzow made 3 birdies and overcame a slow start, to card an impressive 70. We also had plenty of great shots to report. Rob Lietzow holed out for eagle on #1, in a Summer League match. John Strockis dunked a 9-iron on #11, for eagle. Liz Marushin made birdies on #7 and #9. Rob Flannery made eagle on #1, by holing out from the fairway bunker. Dave Dennee made birdie on #4 the day of the “impossible” pin position. Jeff Wallin holed out for birdie out of the bunker on #2, in the Member-Guest Derby. Not to be outdone, Jeff DeLarme holed out for Eagle out of the bunker on #7, to win the derby! The round of the month goes to Bob Keller, who carded an impressive 74. The score is 9 below his age!! Great playing Bob!! The shot of the month is shared by Jack Levy and Sal Maneri. Jack holed out on the tough 16th hole at Rancho Park, for an awesome hole-in-one. Sal made an ace by sinking a wedge on the 15th hole, here at PVGC. He hadn’t made an ace on that hole in nearly 30 years!! Great shots gentlemen!! Keep Shooting for the Stick,

—Scott Talbot, PGA
