Eugene’s original winery and still the best. Come in for complimentary tasting!

ilvan Ridge is a family winery owned by Elizabeth Chambers and it is maintained in the tradition of a small European estate. Through careful vineyard management, vinification of small lots, and judicious blending, Silvan Ridge offers wines that are aromatic, flavorful, and delicious. While the majority of its production centers on Oregon’s flagship varietals, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, the winery also makes a lovely sparkling Muscat that is reminiscent of Moscato di Asti. In addition, Silvan Ridge produces some unique wines from Southern Oregon. With its 300 days of sunshine and 10 inches of rain per year, the Rogue Valley is perfect for ripening Viognier, Syrah, and Malbec. Silvan Ridge is located just 15 miles from downtown Eugene and offers magnificent sunset views. Let our knowledgeable and friendly staff guide you through all that Oregon has to offer.

BEER as a Craft

Page 25: Oregon Resource Guide - 2013

Time travel is possible. An excursion to Agrarian Ales in Eugene gives any beer enthusiast a true taste of history by crafting their brews using the original brewing process in raw form.

“Rooted in Belgian and French farmhouse traditions,” Agrarian Ales utilizes their own farm and farmhouse to cultivate, home-grow, and handpick ingredients for their beer varietals, which evolve with the seasons.

Ben Tilley, one of Agrarian’s owners, takes pride in using hops grown strictly from his farm. The old dairy farmhouse featured a storied chili pepper plot and Agrarian continues the tradition by infusing chili into one or two seasonal beers.

All ingredients that aren’t grown on the farm come from neighboring local farms with a focus on natural, organic cultivation and community relations. Agrarian focuses on old-style, yeast-forward taste, which sets it apart from the IPA-dominant

northwest beer scene. As Tilley reflects, the hop-heavy IPA style was introduced for preservation purposes during long sea voyages and has made a recent comeback as a northwest staple. You won’t find an IPA at the farmhouse.

Agrarian’s beer list does reflect hop-full beers; however, each beer rotates with the season’s crops. If the farmhouse produces a lush chili crop, drinkers will find a kick that season. If the following growing season yields wealthy hops, the hop flavor will come forward. Nature and Agrarian work hand-in-hand to produce an ever-changing menu.

With the creation of Belgene-style (a fusion of Belgian and Eugene), Agrarian Ales offers a truly unique and necessary beer journey for any brew adventurer. The farmhouse is open Friday and Sunday evenings and often features live music that enhances the authentic, old-world brewery experience. Visit Agrarian Ales and taste living history.

Beer as a Craft

Oregon’s Craft Beers Hop to the TopBeer drinkers across the country flock to Oregon year-round for its ever-growing craft beer selection and unique flavor combination. Most of Oregon’s craft breweries keep their product close to home, which makes Oregon a prime choice for the thirsty adventurer.

Agrarian Ales blossomed into the Lane County beer community in true Oregon style. The farmhouse brewery grows their hops and brews their beer on-site, making the distance from start to finish minimal and organic.

The farmhouse specializes in seasonal varieties. Once a beer style is out of season, it may never exist again. Agrarian also pushes their “yeast-forward” taste. An Oregon beer connoisseur will automatically notice another interesting Agrarian twist: no IPAs.

A Belgene beer is available, which combines old-style history with the hop flavor of Eugene beers.

A night at Agrarian Ales brewery will enhance any Oregon adventure. The tasting room rests in the countryside, just feet from the ingredients used in the beer they serve. The old barn provides an authentic beer environment with a pure Eugene vibe and truly once-in-a-lifetime flavor.

For a more modern touch, add Hop Valley to the list of Eugene

breweries on the tour. Its renovated b r e w e r y accentuates the hop-full taste.

With its smooth-with-bite flavor, the Alphadelic IPA is a hit with the IPA-infused Oregon beer market. The Alpha Centauri boosts the intensity even further. For those beer drinkers who enjoy a smooth, traditional flavor, Hop Valley offers a Czech-style pilsner and a delicious blonde.

If one pint at the brewery isn’t enough, acquire a growler, the 64-ounce refillable jug that’s growing in popularity across the state.

Growler Nation specializes in the art of refilling. The one-stop growler shop offers a massive selection of Eugene’s best brews on 30 rotating taps (which even include cider and kombucha).

As “Eugene’s first growler fill station,” Growler Nation also offers cigars and snacks to accompany any growler selection.

Falling Sky Brewing provides another authentic Eugene beer experience. With clever word

with delicious taste. Aside from the

p i c k l e d duck egg, the

restaurant menu boasts bold-yet-traditional pub food

to accentuate the brew offerings as well.

Eugene’s First National Taphouse provides an ideal setting to enjoy the best brews the Northwest offers. With 28 taps settled in an old bank vault, the Taphouse offers any Eugene visitor or resident the chance to select their favorite style.

In Central Oregon, Bend is climbing the ranks as one of the nation’s top destinations for craft brewing (ranked

seventh according to CNN). With an ideal beer tour circle setup, Bend is a must-stop for any beer enthusiast.

Depending on which national poll assembles the rankings, Portland is the best place in the country to taste craft beers. From historic breweries to brand new establishments, Portland is another required destination for the connoisseur on the tour.

According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, Oregon is the second largest hop and craft beer producer in the nation. The state’s attitude, creativity, and natural elements make Oregon the best stop in North America for any beer enthusiast. Take a journey and explore the flavors of Oregon.

alutations and greetings from the incredible Sea Lion Caves on the beautiful Oregon Coast!

Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife refuge and bird sanctuary. We are the year-round home of the Stellar sea lion, which takes residence here in America’s largest sea cave. We are not a zoo, so the sea lions come and go as they please in their native environment.

Each visitor descends 208 feet to the Cave, where our tour guide will be available to answer questions. Next, they may stroll up the pathway to the staging area and view spouting whales in the untamed Pacific Ocean. The next stop is the Overlook, where, during the spring and summer, the sea lion pups are born and hundreds of sea lions congregate.

Our customer service is superior, our bathrooms are the cleanest on the Oregon Coast, and our sparkling gift shop has a variety of quality merchandise at reasonable prices. We have world famous fudge and popcorn, with ice cream being offered for the first time this year.

Our normal admission prices are: $14 for adults, $13 for seniors over 60 and military, and $8 for children 5-12. Please check out sealioncaves.com and Navifun.net for additional information. Hours of operation are 9-7 during the summer through Labor Day. After Labor Day call for hours.

Customers call a visit to the Sea Lion Caves – “A breathtaking experience!” After all, we are

nothing short of wild!

CAFÉ 440 hits the restaurant scene with an emphasis on Pacific Northwest influence. Its reasonably-priced menu, paired with deliciously-simple meals, makes it a must-stop.

Nestled near national food chains in Coburg Station, Café 440 stands out as a local option. Owner Todd Schuetz seeks local producers for his ingredients, from cheese makers to berry farmers.

Schuetz utilizes a large portion of his advertizing budget to influence the community by donating to a different local charity every month, further promoting Café 440’s local philosophy.

“By doing something positive, we will attract positive people to us,” Schuetz says. The restaurant’s

positive aura is exemplified in its food, its style, and its staff.

Local beers grace the rotating tap list. Old-style comfort foods, like mac-n-cheese, are menu staples. Fresh fish from the Pacific Northwest adds a different zest to customers’ palates.

With 2,700 square feet of restaurant space, Schuetz puts his floor to prime use. The interior design is simple, which allows the lively atmosphere and bold food to take center stage.

Why visit Café 440? “I’m competing against national chains on a local street,” Schuetz says. For those looking to select the local option, Café 440 is the

best choice. Most likely, the owner will be at the door to greet you.

DINING

Tokyo Ramen and Tokyo Tonkatsu are two local restaurants owned by a husband and wife, Hirofumi and Kyung Hee, who are new to Eugene from Japan. Both restaurants strive to create healthy and authentic Japanese cuisine.

Tokyo Ramen opened in October of 2012. Kyung Hee cooks at the ramen shop and a small group of employees work to create a positive experience for customers. Noodles are made in-house daily. The broth is homemade using hormone- and preservative-free chicken (vegetarian broth available!) and it’s cooked for up to seven hours, which sets this restaurant apart from others in town. All side dishes are homemade and MSG free and each dish is customizable. Tokyo Ramen

also offers vegetarian dishes. Milky Way bubble tea drinks are available as well!

The sister restaurant, Tokyo Tonkatsu, opened in March of 2013. This relaxing dine-in offers an authentic tatami room for those who are interested. Tonkatsu provides specials for birthday parties and reservations (you can make reservations by calling 458-205-8076).

The owner, Hirofumi, works as a sushi chef and head chef at this location. The tasty pork cutlet dish “tonkatsu” is a favorite here. A friendly staff and an inviting interior offer an engaging spot downtown to have a glass of local wine or beer with your meal. All dishes are made fresh in-house. You can view the menu at: www.Tokyo-Tonkatsu.com

Sunset Valley Organics, nestled in the heart of the Willamette Valley, was founded in 2006 when Wilt Farms become certified organic with their 75 acres of blueberries. Wilt Farms has been in the valley since the early 1900’s and has remained a small family farm. Over the years the ground has been host to a variety of crops including: numerous varieties of squash, beans, corn, lettuce, peppers, cauliflower, strawberries, blueberries, and Christmas trees, as well as livestock including sheep and turkeys. Now the organic farm is completely certified organic berries including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.

Current owner Bob Wilt started his journey to organic farming in 2003, but has been farming all his life, taking over from his farther in 1970. In the early 2000’s the idea of certified organic was fairly new and not too much information was out on it, so Bob self educated himself and with a key knowledge of chemistry, biology, and physics to formulate a new way to not only give back to the earth, to make it healthy, but also to create nutrient dense berries that are packed full of vitamins and nutrient that the human body needs.

In 2011 Mr. Wilt decided it was time to branch out into other berries and to see if the same practices could be applied to other types of berries. He planted strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. In the summer of 2012 the berry farming community faced a new threat, the drosophila fly. While other farmers took losses from their conventional farming methods, Sunset Valley Organics experienced very little damage without using insecticides.

In the summer you and your family can come out to our farm (located south of Corvallis

right off of highway 99W) and pick your own blueberries, we are open seven days a week during harvest. In the winter we have special hours and have made ourselves available for appointments (please call 541-752-0460).

Today Sunset Valley Organics offers frozen certified organic blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries, spreads in blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and blackberry (with a no sugar added option for each variety of berries), dried blueberries, and freeze dried powder available in blueberry, strawberry, and blackberry.

Sunset Valley Organics is GMO free (genetically modified organism), this means that the varieties of berries have not been genetically modified and are completely all natural. A GMO is an organism that has been genetically modified to include gene sequences that do not occur in nature. Theses GMOs started out to be used in research in labs, but are now finding their way on to farms, and producing food that we eat that can be damaging to the human body.

Why does Sunset Valley Organics consider their berries to be nutrient dense? The answer to that is Sunset Valley Organics has gone the extra mile to put more minerals in their berries. They have done numerous tests on their berries nutrition and how it stands up to not only conventional competitors but other organic competitors, these results can be seen on their web page (sunsetvalleyorganics.com), the main result is that Sunset Valley Organics berries are denser in vitamins and minerals. This is a direct effect of our way of farming, a process that continues to grow and be modified according not only to the ground but also to the type and variety of berry being produced.

Brad Cohen, owner of Cottage Grove Chevrolet GMC, has been in the car business for 36 year, beginning as a lot attendant at age 15. Brad was raised in Eugene and attended San Diego State, where he played football for the college. Brad is very active in the community. He volunteers his EMT skills with South Lane Fire and Rescue and lends his three vintage fire trucks for use in community events, parades, and making Christmas special for underprivileged children and nursing home residents as Santa’s elf.

Twenty years ago, Brad purchased Cottage Grove Chevy from its former owner, Uncle Bud. Brad realizes the power of advertising and his familiar face is seen

on billboards, television commercials, and shopping carts. Brad’s advertising is so effective that it has accelerated him to local stardom.

So, make a short drive to see us at Brad’s Cottage Grove Chevrolet GMC, where a “Brad buy is a better buy.”

Oregon's wine culture is booming. The state’s quality product and sophisticated-to-relaxed wine tasting atmospheres attract adventurers from across the world.

Wine tastings and vineyard expeditions are growing into a fun weekend hobby for sommeliers and new wine drinkers. Trips to wineries provide travelers with opportunities to explore the Oregon countryside: scenery that otherwise may go unappreciated.

Eugene’s King Estate Winery establishes itself as a premier venue with exceptional wine. King Estate calls its Acrobat Pinot Noir a “wine born to introduce even more people to the style and grace of Pinot Noir.” With a price under 20 dollars per bottle, any wine enthusiast can experience the quality of a King Estate red.

Experience King Estate’s NxNW on the scenic deck that overlooks lush vineyards and country roads. Relax in the restaurant or tasting room before exploring the cellar through guided tours that inform visitors about the intricacies of viniculture.

Ten miles south, Silvan Ridge Winery provides an abundance of red varietals that will appease wine drinkers at any level. The winery models itself after the small, family-owned vineyards of European style, which provides a quaint setting for a wine tasting journey. Enjoy an ideal Syrah or Malbec and enjoy the surroundings.

An hour north on Interstate 5, travelers can continue their winery expedition at

Willamette Valley Vineyards. The tasting room offers views of vineyards and distant, fast-moving freeway drivers, which accentuates Willamette Valley’s relaxed aura.

Depending on the day, visitors experience selected food pairings with each wine sample in the tasting line-up. For a special wine indulgence, Willamette Valley opens its basement cellar and occasionally allows tastings funneled directly from the barrel.

Spend a mid-valley evening in at Umpqua Valley’s Henry Estate Winery, which boasts tradition from family lineage and its regional kinship to France’s Burgundy region. Henry Estate is one of Oregon’s oldest and most established wine producers.

Experience Henry Estate’s wide range of wine styles in a tasting flight, from Pinot Noir to Gewurztraminer, and enjoy a picnic in the picturesque Memory Garden. Henry Estate rents its facilities for special events as well.

Those moving south on Interstate 5 will experience enjoyment in Rogue Valley varietals. Southern Oregon wines are becoming a staple with the Northwest wine community for its robust flavor, deep color, and bold style.

Take a drive through any region of Oregon wine country and enjoy the tastes, sounds, and sights of Oregon grapes.
