Corner “The cynics are wrong.” (President Barack Obama)

The Reverend Nathanael Saint-Pierre

Every time the name of Jonah is mentioned, we think of the fairy tale of a man travelling in the belly of

a big fish. But it is important to dig a little deeper into the story to comprehend it better. Jonah was

called by God to go to Nineveh and announce the punishment God was about to inflict on the people

there. Jonah was called to prophesy (preach or write with divine inspiration, speak on behalf of God).

He did not want to go; instead, he ran away, away toward larshish, away from the presence of God.

Today the story of Jonah should inspire those of us who think we can play games with the Lord or run

away.

L So Jonah runs away, but God sends a storm. Jonah tries to flee on a boat but the sailors are more

pious than he is; eventually they reluctantly throw Jonah overboard to save their lives. The sea calmsThe Rev. NathanaelS. e down immediately, and God appoints a big fish to swallow Jonah. Sometimes to save the boat from

Priest-In-Charge the storm we need to throw someone overboard. But we need to pray for the sea to calm down after

that, because it is terrible to throw the wrong person overboard and find that the sea is still agitated, the storm still devastating.

Jonah, totally immersed in sea water and fish blubber, does indeed sing a prayer: “You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the

seas, and the flood surrounded me.” The sea in the ancient Near East, of course, is the symbol of chaos, of danger, of wildness.

But even in the heart of the seas, God hears Jonah’s prayer. God speaks to the great fish, and the fish vomits him out onto dry

land.

That’s where we enter the story in the Old Testament reading selected for today. ‘The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second

time, ‘Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city.’ “ And, this time, still covered in sea water and fish vomit, Jonah obeys. He walks

into the city, one day’s journey, and preaches the shortest sermon ever recorded. It’s a sermon of 5 words in Hebrew -- “Forty

days more, and Nineveh will be overthrown!”

If this sermon were to be preached nowadays, one can only guess how such a message would be translated. Being called to de

liver such a message is a huge responsibility and trying to trivialize it in any way is not mocking the actors involved, it is mocking

God himself. Some of us may not realize it, but being called to ordained ministry, being called to be warden or vestry member,

being called to be baptized or confirmed, is really not a game. It is to be called to a position of responsibility, a responsibility to

ponder and to be sure we can carry. The calling is not a time to ridicule God, to find ways to fool God, to create intrigues and ma-

nipulate ballots, to affempt to find shortcuts to get to positions of authority without legitimacy. Doing all of the above is to exhibit

lack of judgment. People need to be told about the consequences of running away from the presence of God. People need to be

told about the consequences of swimming in the ocean of darkness.

It was not easy when Jesus called Peter, Andrew, John and James from their labor to leave ALL they were doing and follow him.

What they had been doing was all they knew how to do. That was what they had been doing all their lives. But an epiphany is the

sudden realization that when we are called, our lives are forever changed. It is also the realization that God himself has forever

changed and nothing can go back to where it was before. The tendency to maintain the status quo is cheating on God’s plan. We

need to be open to the unexpected in which “God will shake us up, God will shape us up and God will even choke us.” By

answering their call, Peter, Andrew, John and James were changed from fisherman to fishers of men. By answering our calls and

not making a game of them, our lives will change and we can impact the lives of others. “The cynics are wrong.”

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

Jonah re[uctantty travels to Nineveh and warns the citizens of God’s judgment. Whenthey heed the warning and repent, God spares them.

A reading (lesson) from the Book of Jonah:

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tet[ you.” So Jonah set out andwent to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedinglytarge city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’swalk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And thepeople of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great andsmall, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed hismind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not doit.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Gatitee, proctaiming the good news ofGod, and saying, “The time is futfitted, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and betieve in the good news.”

So Jonah runs away, but God sends a storm. Jonah tries to flee on a boat but

the sailors are more pious than he is; eventuatty they retuctantly throw Jonah

overboard to save their lives. The sea catms down immediatety, and God appoints a big

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite tove you made us for yourself; and, when we

them, and said, “Drink this, att of you: This is my Btood of the new Covenant, which is

shed for you and for att for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
